This is peak offseason discussion and I'm here for it.

Also I have my 17 and 22 papers to be framed. Do you usually just frame the one page I guess? Pull out the innards?

I framed the poster reproductions instead of the actual newspapers. I think that's what cmk did too. https://houston-chronicle.myshopify.com/products/2022-poster-3-frameable-high-gloss-front-page-reproduction-11x22

If you want a cheaper framing option, check these guys out. I bought my 17 frame from them and am waiting on my 22 frame: https://displays4sale.com/products/houston-astros-2017-world-series-champions-newspaper-metal-display-frame

I take this as no we just don't see a fit here for him any longer. And since no one else is signing him they all see diminishing returns as well.

No kidding. Just let him be occasional DH/1B getting plenty of rest in the regular season and let him do his thing in Oct.

He has a .711 OPS in the postseason. That's solid but not outstanding. Before this year it was .687. You cant just take away a season to make a point, but going into 2022 did you feel the same way out "what he does in Oct"? I looked into the details of 2022 playoffs several weeks back He just all of a sudden stop striking out, but kept the similar quality of contact. I doubt that's repeatable.

Without looking it up, where did the term "balls to the wall" originate from?
I had a boss long ago that told me that expression referred to old flyball governors that controlled the speed of locomotive steam engines. They worked on the principle of centrifugal force, the wider the opposing balls were the faster the engine speed. I never tried to verify that. Is this right?

Maybe. Something like the expression, "gone Johnson "

That term was coined by John Wayne Bobbitt

Haha

I hope he really believes that. The one play way from getting cut mentality, if harnessed correctly, will make him great.

Don't love that, but everything is in place for the next few years. Need a real GM to keep it rolling beyond that

Because his qualifications are a former ball player from 2-3 decades ago without much front office experience. He's spoken multiple times about not being a huge fan of analytics which was one of the biggest reasons we're in the middle of a dynasty. He's more like another voice echoing Dusty and not more similar Luhnow or Click.

Dana Brown, Atlanta's vice president of scouting, has emerged as the clear front-runner to become the Astros' next general manager.

Brown, 55, who has been with Atlanta the past four years, is one of the game's shrewdest talent evaluators. He has been responsible for Atlanta's fabulous draft success, recently selecting outfielder Michael Harris and starter Spencer Strider, who finished 1-2 in last year's NL Rookie of the Year voting.

Brown would become baseball's lone Black GM, and join vice president Ken Williams of the Chicago White Sox as the only Black executives in charge of baseball operations.

Another thing from the article on yuli:
Quote:

Free agent first baseman Yuli Gurriel is expected to sign with the Marlins on a one-year contract even after the trade for Arraez, but no deal has been consummated. The Astros offered a contract to bring him back in a reserve role, but Gurriel, 36, still wants to be a full-time player.

Maybe he could bring in some of the magic of locking up the young studs to very team friendly deals as well.

Reading more about Brown, I really like the idea of him becoming the GM. In addition to his 4 year in ATL overseeing player scouting/draft, he spent the previous 9 years as special assistant to the GM in Toronto where it appears he had significant influence over player evaluation. Not much info prior to that but sounds like early in his career he was a scout. Based on the talent both Toronto and Atlanta drafted and developed during his tenures, he seems like an ideal candidate.

Watched whatever interviews I could find online and he seems strong. The track record looks good with recent ATL drafts. Much better tag. The other 2 names previously floated.

Fair enough. I was just curious why everyone was so against it.

I think he is just a guy from a different generation and resisted analytics like a lot of guys that didn't come up with it, but is sharp enough to figure it out if given the opportunity. Anyway the GM doesn't need to be the smartest guy in the room. He just needs to be humble enough to listen to the smartest guys in the room.
