I would be shocked if anyone under 45 has ever done it. Maybe 50.
I'm 39 42. Heard it my entire life.

Have absolutely no idea.
fixed it for me

though, I could probably make some guesses
Everything I look up referenced wooden golf clubs and the screwed on metal face plates. Supposedly the area between the screws in the middle was the sweat spot and so baseball and cricket use the term for hitting it in the sweat spot.

So it's not surprising those of us that played ball our entire life wouldn't know an obscure golf reference that was stolen. And I played in a wood bat league.

I had a persimmon 3 wood that I would use off of the tee. Loved hitting that thing pure and I was consistent with it. Of course, everyone else at the time was getting their new Big Berthas.

I had a full set of persimmons I learned to lay with and used for about 10 years before the first metals came out. They were so small and unforgiving compared to the berthas. Today you can miss hit a ball and carry it straight for 250 or more. Back then if you were a little off that ball was flying who the hell knew where.

Irons were the same way. None of this cavity backed perimeter weighted stuff. My first set were Hogan blades. Unforgiving is being kind. And no fancy alien looking putter. A good old pure 8802.
When Mathguy lays the wood, he means it.

Laying the wood by going balls to the wall and hitting it on the screws.

Those were the good old days.

Family member bought a brand new Ping eye 2 wooden driver, I think they last year they made em, 96, and ended up hating it. I had a used Big Bertha Hawkeye I was using at the time but couldn't really get distance with it. He offered to let me have it after I tried it and was outdriving my BB by like 20 yards. Loved that club.

They needed pitching worse, I guess. Lopez is solid and under control for 2 more years. Someone (Plouffe?) mentioned the Twins top prospects are middle INF which I just checked and they have 2 top 40 prospects ready to graduate that are listed as SS.

My favorite all-time stat about the Cubs is that in 1962, the expansion Colt 45s went 64-96 with a roster full of rookies and past-their-prime rentals.

In that same season, the Cubs, in their 59th year as a franchise, went 59-103 with a roster featuring four future Hall-of-Famers.

had to look it up...

Ernie Banks (with 512 career HR's) had an OPS of .588 in the Astrodome.

only hit 3 HR's in 169 plate appearances on Kirby & Fannin.

granted it was the last 1/3 of his career, but the dome took no prisoners
I had to look it up too. I didn't realize they had Lou Brock playing daily then along with Banks, Williams, and Santo. The guys they got back when they traded Brock to the Cardinals are on par with the Yordan trade with LA for hilarious terribleness.

Note to professional athletes, their agents and their PR people who have access to the social media accounts.

Don't do anything until you sign on the dotted line and paperwork is filed with everyone.

Without looking it up, where did the term "balls to the wall" originate from?
I had a boss long ago that told me that expression referred to old flyball governors that controlled the speed of locomotive steam engines. They worked on the principle of centrifugal force, the wider the opposing balls were the faster the engine speed. I never tried to verify that. Is this right?

Bought Mrs. Marvin this Berkman '05 jersey for Valentine's Day. Well, and a Gucci bag.

I'll wear the jersey… haha.
I love Texas Aggie sports, but I love Texas A&M more.

So you bought a Gucci bag to cover your purchase of a vintage jersey. Nice move.

Well it costs 320 for the 22 one and like 250 for the 17 one. Had no idea it was gonna be that expensive to get something framed.

The framing looks amazing! Love the matting.

I hope to share my pennant and Chron frames soon. And yeah, the cost of custom framing is a *****. I'm not telling the wife what I spent...

Not it.

It refers to pushing the throttle(s) in an airplane, which had little ball grips on the ends, all the way in or to the wall for full power. The image below has a modern knob. I flew an old Cessna 150 years ago that had the balls on the controls. The Marine aviator with me told me about it.

That's interesting but what I found really interesting is that old boss of mine who told me about flyball ( or centrifugal governors) was a pilot. If the origin of that term was rooted in aviation he should have known that. So I did some digging and found that your while your story about Cessna throttles is correct,
it is predated by the one about centrifugal governors for steam locomotives. Here's what I found.
