I hope Trey bounces back. I really had high hopes for him when he came over and for whatever reason he just fell off the face of the planet. But he seemed like a genuinely great guy.

Rangers thread was on top, I humbly offer humor to bring us TTT I bet even the 2013 Astros could beat the 2022 Rangers

Yes, that play got overshadowed by Chas' catch but Trey can definitely feel that he earned his ring. Aithough I guess we'll never know if he gloved that ball out of self defense or not.

I guess 2 years not pitching and a 7 ERA last years bumps my man Forrest W off the list. Pretty rough going from top 5 in all of baseball to out of the Astros top 10.

I predict a move to the bullpen & a career resurgence.

100% what I was thinking. No expectations? I expect Whitley to dominate now.

Aubrey is just salty that Belt took his starting job from him 10 years ago… when he was at the tail end of his career for the Giants putting up even worse numbers than belt just did.

Yikes, Aubrey Huff is a name from the Astros' giant junkpile of 2006-2014, isn't he? Good thing we didn't trade any stud prospects for him, like Ben Zobrist.

Not to crap on Trey cause I really like him but Espada was screaming at him when Schwarber came up to get even closer to the bag. If he's just a step away from first instead of basically straddling the line that rocket likely gets past him.

I'm so glad we kept Joe.

I've been doing some diligence on our system the last couple weeks after "joking" a few weeks ago the Astros biggest problems are 3+ years away.

We're thin at the top for sure. Not having 1st/2nd rounders in 2020-21 is starting to show up in the "rankings". But given how much runway the big club has right now, we've got time to fix that.

I'll be surprised if we have any "lingering" prospects emerge in 2023 as bonafide big leaguers. I'd love to see it, but I doubt it. IMO, 2023 will be remembered as the year that some of our young, less-heralded prospects in Rookie/A ball take big jumps AA/AAA and sneak onto the edge of some top 100 lists. Then in 2024, our system re-claims its spot relative to other strong systems in MLB. Just in time to replace some guys who will inevitably not be back.

A few scattered thoughts:

-Brown has basically arrived, so I'm not really thinking about him as a prospect anymore. He's done his time at AAA and dominated to an extent that it would be pointless for him to go back.

-Agree with Harry about Whitley. I think we tell him going into the spring that "you're our #7 right now, but you need to prove it". If he does, great. If he doesn't, time to try him in a new role.

-Behind the plate, I think Lee is JAG. Diaz could maybe emerge. TBD. I'm not really sure how I see them developing at the big league level though, especially if we bring in another cheap vet. We seem very committed to having savvy vets behind the plate and guys like Barnhart/Alfaro will always be available. This could be Maldy's last year, but maybe not. Long story short, I'm having a hard time seeing where Lee/Diaz are going to get innings at the moment and not sure to what extent Dusty and our establishment is ever going to trust them behind the plate in meaningful situations.

-In the OF, we've got a short term solution in LF, a 3-year solution in RF and maybe a long term solution in CF (but maybe not). We need Gilbert start knocking on the door by early/mid 2024. IMO he's our most important prospect rn. Leon, Melton, Barber, Dirden, Daniels, etc... just need one of them to emerge. Two would be great. Big year coming up for Leon to figure his s**t out at the plate.

-Glad to see Ullola sneak into our top 10. He's the guy with the Javier-esque fastball. Santa and Tamarez (like I posted about last week) are also young Dominicans with elite fastballs. Gotta think we've got more in the queue that we don't know about yet. Looking forward to seeing how they fare this year.

-We've got a decent crop of recent college pitcher draft picks too.. Andrew Taylor, Michael Knorr and Jayden Murray (who we got from the Rays in the Siri/Mancini trade) specifically. Hope one of them emerges this year.

-One interesting name to keep an eye on this year is SS/OF Christian Gonzalez. We signed him super young out of the DR in 2018. He's 21 now but apparently just shot up to 6'6" and his power numbers are about to surge. He hasn't done much statistically in the minors yet, but I've read he could be on the verge.

-Lastly, I'm intrigued by our queue of international teens we've signed last year/this year. Early returns are good on Luis Baez and Kenni Gomez. Add in Camilo Diaz/Emil Valencia this year. Looking forward to seeing where they've progressed 2024-25.

More Christian Gonzalez info. Far from a sure thing but an interesting, high upside prospect. He hasn't done much at A ball yet. Will be watching him closely this year though...

Quote:

After landing in the international penalty box for exceeding their bonus pool in 2016, the Astros were limited to paying no more than $300,000 for anyone in the next two years. They gave the maximum to Gonzalez in 2018, and the Dominican has emerged as the best prospect in that crop. He made his U.S. debut last summer and needed just three weeks to merit a promotion to Low-A.

Listed at 6-foot-3, Gonzalez continues to grow and is closer to 6-foot-6 today. His frame gives him tremendous leverage and combines with his bat speed to produce outstanding exit velocities that could increase further as he matures physically. If he can keep his right-handed swing from getting too long, develop some plate discipline and learn to drive more balls in the air, he could produce 20 or more homers per season.

Gonzalez has a rocket arm at shortstop and his throws across the infield have been clocked up to 99 mph. An average runner, he has a quick first step and more than enough range to stay at shortstop. If he slows down too much as he fills out, his power potential and arm would fit the right-field profile.

My sub lapsed and I'm considering not renewing. Do I really need constant notifications about who's arguing me on the internet? Most of the Inside info goes public fast. I still have access to you folks on our baseball thread. Testing it out since I've had this silly thing for 15+ years.

Belt was among a group of older Giants players in 2021...that had magical seasons...really magical / renaissance seasons for guys in their mid-30's. And then fell off a cliff last year. Truly amazing
