yes, some folks don't remember how good George Foster, Ken Griffey, and Dan Driessen were on those teams.

Foster had an incredible 5-year stretch from 1975 to 1979.

Griffey hit .300 behind Rose and in front of Morgan in 75, 76, and 77

and a couple of other things...

the Big Red Machine was competing against another dynasty within its division. The Dodgers had an excellent run from 1974 to 1981 with all-star lineups and great pitching staffs. But only 1 of them could make the playoffs each year.

the Big Red Machine also gets a boost from the epic -- almost transcendental -- 1975 World Series. The star power on the field between the Reds and Red Sox is / was unparalleled in the division era. And of course Fisk's iconic game 6 walk-off home run

reserve clause struck down in 1975

what the Astros have pulled off with the current relative payroll is extremely impressive
Astros are playing the A's and the Rangers 38 times a year. The 1975 Reds could have gone 135-27 in the current AL West.

The '75 Reds had 3 teams with 90+ losses in their division. Let's not romanize stuff just cause some of yall are old.

I had a George Foster glove in Little League in 1979.

52 HR and 149 RBI in 1977. Unreal.

  • About to be 27.
  • Not great in the minors until he kind of broke out in AAA last year.
  • Played very limited in the bigs and didn't do well.
  • Lefty bat with a plus arm and okay speed.
  • Would have had 5 HRs in MMP last year.
  • Probably not making the big league roster.

He was a casualty of the injury bug TB had. They rolled a ton of guys up and down because of injury which lead them to having tons on the 40man at the end of the year

and on the flipside...the Giants won 3 championships in a 5-year stretch...but no one considers SF a dynasty.

because (1) they missed the playoffs the years in-between and (2) their season win totals in the title years were 88, 92, and 94 --- not overly impressive

One of the strangest runs in sports I can ever remember. And one of those seasons they had a losing record.

Anybody going to be in West Palm for any spring training? A buddy and I are going to the game against the Cardinals in Jupiter on 3/2 and then vs Braves on 3/3 at home in WPB.

Mrs. Marvin and I will be there 3/3 and 3/5. Short trip this year.

Let's be sure to meet up- beverage of choice on me!

I love Texas Aggie sports, but I love Texas A&M more.

Total guess - 5 year $155M. Option for year 6-7. And Carlos should jump at that.

Nah. He gets basically the same 5 yr $100 mil contract that everyone else gets. He will accept it and he will like it.

He gets to compete for WS every year.

Makes you wonder if he ends up signing for close to what Crane offered him if he regrets not taking it.

He'd only need too 4/125 to top the offer. I think he'll get that no problem with or without an ankle.

If he comes back to Houston, CC has to re-enact the scene from Happy Gilmore where Happy asks Chubb to coach him again, and has to wear Happy's outfit from that scene.

I'm stupid. You're smart. I was wrong. You were right. You're the best. I'm the worst. You're very good-looking. I'm not very attractive.

I was 10 years old in 1975 and listened to the Astros on the radio darn near every game. Remember how it was hard not to marvel at the Reds. What a fantastic lineup. I never had a George Foster glove, but in the late 70's my parents took a trip to Venezuela. They were lost trying to get to a national park and had to ask a stranger for directions. That stranger was Dave Concepcion. My dad got his autograph for me which I still have.

I realize that things snowball, but we are really talking about an injury from the minors 8 years ago, that's never affected him, tanking his contract? 10-12 year deals are dumb in general, but it's hard for me to believe that all the teams just came to that realization in regards to a single player.

I don't remember anything as menacing as a young Astros fan as George Foster standing at the plate with that baleful glare, waving his black bat.

How dare you disagree with Farmer. Don't you know he's always right and knows more about the ins and outs of baseball than anyone here!!!

Fwiw I think Carlos is gunna get a 3/4ish year deal and hope to get one more crack at a huge deal.
