They are coming back. Both of them. Blummer confirmed this back in November.
There was one poster who claimed he told him that directly while driving him around at the Houston Open. He drops all kinds of hints in podcasts and his radio appearances that he's not signed on.
Part 4 of my 937-part series recapping the 2022 championship series.
May 11-20 Record: 6-4 Overall Record: 25-15 AL West Position: 1st place, 1.5 game lead
Game #31, May 11, 2022, Astros 11, Twins 3 @ Target Field Attendance: 17,232 Record: 20-11
The Astros' win streak hit nine as they crushed the Twins, collecting 11 runs on 15 hits, and scoring all 11 runs in the first six innings. Every Astro starter got a hit, even Martin Maldonado whose average shot up to .087. Jose Altuve and Kyle Tucker hit home runs, and Altuve, Alex Bregman, Yordan Alvarez, Tucker, and Jeremy Pena each had two hits. Pena led the way with a trio of RBI. Jose Urquidy got the start but came out after three innings with injuries concerns, leading to a win for Bryan Abreu, who pitched two innings of relief. Phil Maton provided thrills to the Twin fans with three hits and a run allowed, although it was unearned.
Game #32, May 12, 2022, Astros 5, Twins 0 @ Target Field Attendance: 16,918 Record: 21-11
How about 10 wins in a row? The Astros swept the Twins thanks to a dominating pitching performance led by a 5-inning shutout performance and 9 strikeouts to improve to 3-1 with a 2.94 ERA. The Astros pounced on Josh Winder early, with a pair of Yordan Alvarez home runs as he drove in three to take the team lead in RBI with 19. Jeremy Pena started in the two hole and was 3 for 3 with a run scored to get his average to .276. Jason Castros went 0 for 2 with a run scored and a pair of walks, getting his OBP up to a scintillating .237. Game 33, May 13, 2022, Astros 6, Nationals 1 @ Nationals Park Attendance: 18,433 Record 22-11
The Astros extended the win streak to 11 by smashing their 2019 World Series nemesis with a 5-run first inning on the road. Jose ALtuve belted a two-run homer off of Josiah Gray, and it just kinda got worse for the Nats from there. Michael Brantley doubled, Alex Bregman doubled, Yordan Alvareaz singled, and Yuli Gurriel jacked a two-run homer. The Nationals left Gray in for all of that, and I'm assuming the manager hates him because they just kept pitching him, allowing him to let Alvarez to hit a homer in the third. They finally took him out after six innings. Framber Valdez evened his record at 2-2, allowing just 1 run and striking out six in 7- innings.
Game 34, May 14, 2022, Nationals 13, Astros 6 @ Nationals Park Attendance: 22,949 Record: 22-12
The wheels finally came off the wagon and it got ugly in a hurry as the Nationals bombed the Astros for 14 hits. Cristian Javier got bombed for 7 earned runs in 3-and- innings, and the bullpen wasn't much better. Phil Maton gave up 2 earned runs to get his ERA safely back over 4.00 and Blake Taylor gave up 4 earned runs in his one inning of work. The Astros were led by Jose Siri, who had a triple and a homer and went 3 for 5 in the leadoff role.
Game 35, May 15, 2022, Astros 8, Nationals 0 @ Nationals Park Attendance: 25,915 Record: 23-12
Justin Verlander owned the Nationals like Sigfried owns Roy, pitching 5 shutout innings and allowing just two hits to improve to 5-1 with a 1.38 ERA. The Astro bats were quiet for four innings, then came to life on Martin Maldonado's two-run home run off Patrick Corbin. Yuli Gurriel homered in the sixth, and Chas McCormick blasted one to start a four-run seventh. Jose Altuve went yard in the ninth. Machete was 2 for 4 to get his average up to .113 on the year. The Astros also made a roster move, sending Niko Goodrum to Sugarland and activating Mauricio Dubon. About two months later, I realized they were not the same person. Corbin dropped to 0-6 with a 6.28 ERA on his way to a 6-19 season.
Game 36, May 16, 2022, Red Sox 6, Astros 3 @ Fenway Pahhhhhhk Attendance: 29,706 Record: 23-13
Phil Maton and Hector Neris combined to give up four runs in relief as the Red Sox stuffed the Astros 6-3, ruining another strong starting performance by Jake Odorizzi, who gave up 1 earned run in 5 innings.Up 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Maton gave up a leadoff homer to Trevor Story. In the bottom of the eighth, Nerris poured fuel on the fire with an RBI double to JD Martinez and a two-run homer to Xander Bogaerts. The Astros were held to seven runs, including Chas McCormick's fourth home run of the year. Jason Castro and Mauricio Dubon each got a hit, one of the seven signs that these are the end times, as foretold in the New Testament.
Game 37, May 17, 2022, Astros 13, Red Sox 4 @ Fenway Pahhhhhhk Attendance: 27,328 Record: 24-13
The Astros brought ghosts of the 2021 ALCS back to Boston, dropping a 9-spot on the Red Sox in the second inning to erase an early 1-0 deficit and rapping out 15 hits to make a winner out of Jose Urquidy. The big inning came against future Texas Rangers' superstar Nathan Eovaldi. Yordan Alvarez greeted him with a homer to left to start the inning. After Yuli Gurriel reached on an error, Kyle Tucker and Jeremy Pena went back to back to make it 4-1. With one out, Martin Maldonado singled and went to third on Jose Altuve's double. Michael Brantley followed with a three-run homer that snuck over the Pesky Pole in right to make it 7-1, and Gurriel hit a two-run homer that scored Alvarez to make it 9-1. The Red Sox graciously left Eovaldi in for all of that. Because nothing builds confidence like giving up five home runs in one inning. It was Pena's first game at Fenway Park. He grew up a huge Red Sox fan in nearby Providence, Rhode Island. Tucker delivered a grand slam in the top of the fourth to cap the Astros' scoring. Tucker had 5 RBI to take the team lead with 25. Alvarez hit his 12th home run.
Game 38, May 18, 2022, Red Sox 5, Astros 1 @ Fenway Pahhhhhk Attendance: 31,717 Record: 24-14
The Red Sox cooled off the Astros' hot bats, limiting them to just two hits and scoring two unearned runs. Nick Pivetta threw a complete game, allowing the two hits and no walks, while striking out eight. The lone bright spot was Jose Altuve's solo home run to lead off the game. Luis Garcia took the loss, allowing 3 earned runs in 4 innings.
Game 39, May 19, 2022, Astros 5, Rangers 1 @ Minute Maid Park Attendance: 34,593 Record: 25-14
When you're down and troubled, there's no better cure for the blues than inviting the Texas Rangers to come play. Framber Valdez improved to 3-2, allowing 1 earned run in 7 innings and striking out 7 to lower his ERA to 2.68 on the year. Clinging to a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the eighth, the Astros turned to offensive juggernaut Martin Maldonado, who lashed a bases-loaded double to score Kyle Tucker, Jeremy Pena, and Chas McCormick, who had all drawn walks off Ranger reliever and member of the Borg collective, Josh Sborz.
Game 40, May 20, 2022, Rangers 3, Astros 0 @ Minute Maid Park Attendance: 35,294 Record 25-15
As per league rules, the Astros were forced to sacrifice two draft picks for being shutout by the Rangers, who were tasting wild card excitement in mid-May, reaching 18-20 with the victory. Martin Perez went the distance for an 8-hit shutout, as the Astros went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. It wasted a beautiful effort by Cristian Javier, who struck out nine and allowed 1 run on 3 hits in 6 innings. Rafael Montero gave up two runs after his own error kept the Rangers' eighth inning alive to add the insurance, causing Dusty Baker to throw in the towel and let Phil Maton pitch the ninth.
I still can't believe that the guy we stole Yordan for is the same guy who contributed big time to the 17 Game 2 debacle in LA. With all the crying about cheating in Houston.
Only beautiful **** like that can happen to the Dodgers.
No proof because it's against the rules, but I'm confident the Dodgers signed Yordan with no intention of keeping him. They did it for us because we'd give them an MLB level piece to bolster their bullpen.
Day 13 since Correa "signed" with the Mets. Oh to be a fly on the wall between them and Boras right now. For once it seems like the ownership has all the power in a negotiation. They're plenty good without CC, and if another deal falls through, who's going to want to pay him market value?
I'll stick my neck out here and guess that this is more than a 9 year old ankle injury. This just feels like it's more than that. If that's what it is then CC and Boras are never going to get what they want. Not with 2 teams bailing and the very very limited number of teams who can afford that kind of money. And who need a SS/3B.
I think it is the ankle. I think it's as simple as the Giants not liking how it was repaired for the long term. As he rolls into the 30s and really puts some more mileage on there, they think he's going to break down. Now the Mets staff maybe agree. And now Cohen can squeeze Correa. I think they want him, but they see an opportunity to get him at a further discount.
I'm not sure the Mets want him as much as they think they did. They clearly don't need him at SS and have a young 3B who while he doesn't have Correa's pedigree, was not bad either and the marginal upgrade vs cost increase is really insane. What they would be buying is playoff Carlos. And with where they are on the payroll/CBT slot is that roll of the dice really worth it? I guess if you are in NYC and win a ring you can argue it is.
Okay because I was seriously asking. I am no Mets expert, but I didn't know of any big-time prospect for their INF. That's their problem. No farm ready for the bigs so they're buying everyone.
If we make it back to the WS this year. What NL team would you most want to play and why? For me, the Mets, payback for 86 and anytime you can beat any NY team and piss them off the better. Off of this list.
• Mets and Dodgers don’t make it to World Series • Angels finish 4th in AL West • Astros first team to go back-to-back WS Champions since Yankees
I'd LOVE to beat the Dodgers, but there's a chance they don't even make it into the postseason. I've always loved the Cardinals rivalry we had when we were in the NL Central, so that would be an awesome series for me.
With the strength of the NL East and the Padres potentially passing them, I could see it. The schedule isn't as imbalanced as it has been, so intradivision play won't beat up teams as much. It's not likely they miss out, but it is possible.
I'd LOVE to beat the Dodgers, but there's a chance they don't even make it into the postseason.
Really?
They will make it but I would not be shocked to see them the 5 seed. They won't be the same juggernaut they have been. And I think the balanced schedule will mess some teams up and even things out a bit. West and East coast teams will both have more opposite coast trips than before.
I think SD will outhit them and win the West on offense.
Whoever doesn't in between the Mets and Atlanta will be the 4 seed. LA the 5.
Brewers won 86 games and missed the playoffs by 1. The Dodgers have won 92 or more every year since 2013. They're still stacked. I can't see them being anywhere close to missing the playoffs.
