We should have done this deal
Is it safe to assume that the $19M that Cohen is going to pay McCann to not be a Met is in addition to the $111M luxury tax bill that Cohen owes?

I think $2.5M per year and one low tier prospect for 2 years of McCann is a good price and agree that would have been intriguing for a backup catcher and backup 1st baseman.

He's been Maldy bad the last 2 years. We need to target a lefty.
Gary Sanchez hits RHP better than lefties. Has fallen off, but still better at hitting than a typical catcher.

Market value 1 yr, $6.4M?

Yeah, but 57 year old Biggio is probably as good behind the dish as Sanchez. He's more of a DH now anyway.

Wonder what JV thinks of the Mets trading away his personal catcher?

I remember him being bad with the Yankees & TBH I don't really know what the best metric to judge defense is, but they have his 2022 DWar (and his career) listed as slightly positive.

So maybe he's not as bad as the eyeball test indicates?

Even a broken clock…

I don't love Sanchez and that's probably a little pricey for a platoon guy that Dusty isn't going to give enough ABs to, but there aren't a lot of LHB C options left.

The guy will have $111M tax bill in 2023 ( which is higher than approx 10 franchises entire payrolls

This is the start of his third year of ownership, he wants to win, and has the resources to field a competitive team. To put the tax bill in perspective. This $111M tax bill for him is the equivalent of a $660 dollar tax bill for someone with a net worth of $100,000.

Are you not going to quote Steve Phillips here, and just pretend like this is your original thought?

Yes he said it this morning on MLB radio. Your point? Does it take away from the validity? Still going to continue to gloss over my other comments / questions? Do I need to go back through this thread and any other for that matter, calling out thoughts that came from the talking heads, and are not "original"?

If Correa signs with the Mets, it will be high AAV short term deal. The big fish is Ohtani.for all the talk about the spending look at the actual contracts. Only one is of significant length and moderately high AAV. Everything else is short term.

JV to the Mets. Calling it now. Uncle Stevie pulls out the checkbook.

Stephen Matz shunned them last year, then Stevo went and got Scherzer...Mets aren't going with Verlander. It's going to be Senga and Rodon.
I just don't understand how you made zero comments through the Astros epic WS run but are all over this thread defending Cohen while being perpetually wrong in your predictions.

We've got plenty of passionate opinions around here but I feel like our unwritten rule is "don't make it personal unless it's funny/good-natured".

If you want pointless anger take it to the football board.

I am watching all of Pena's postseason hits and came across the first inning of game 4. Can you believe they pulled the infield in after Tuve lead off with a double and reached 3rd? That almost reeked of as much desperation as Schwarber trying to bunt with 2 strikes.

One thing I noticed about Pena, he wasn't getting a bunch of mistake pitches and making them pay. He was able to hit all types of pitchers, all locations of the zone, and all locations on the field. He only had 2 questionable (not really the word I'm looking for) hits. 1. being a standard bloop. 2. being a hit-and-run where the 2nd baseman was. The rest were all pretty much lasers.

On his hits, 75% hard, 97.5 EV, 15 LA.

If anyone is interested, this link should work.

I know, I know…

I just think he's going to be a star. Like with Framber when he first came up and the analytics didn't back it up but you could just tell he was a winner, flashes of brilliance and was eventually going to be a stud.

I was one of the only guys that wanted Framber on that playoff roster his rookie year & he might have floundered at the time and he definitely has some struggles after that…but you could just see he had the stuff. Peña is the same way

Don't worry, no one thinks you were wrong, as you've proven, this was likely not you original thought, just a quot from someone else that you tried passing off as your own.

I think it was a testament to our starting pitching and bullpen. They basically played it like any run they gave up would be a back breaker...which is in direct contrast to the mashing style they played throughout the NL playoffs where they assumed their bats would carry them.

God, Cohen looks like such a putz. I bet he's eating up all this celebrity sports adulation. It would be a mighty shame if the long knives of the NY press came out if the Mets stumble at all. I mean that would be a damn shame, wouldn't it.
Can someone explain to me why you guys are so concerned with a guy spending money that is not yours, on a team you don't care to support? No one has yet to answer me this. What alternative did he have but to spend? I doubt most of you know what the roster situation was this offseason. Further, I doubt most, if anyone here knows the farm situation. He has what amounts to basically unlimited resources, but he isn't allowed to make his team better? How many of you would do the same if you were in his position?
It is a relevant conversation about a team spending $500 million per season on payroll in an industry with a soft cap of $230 million.

The guy will have $111M tax bill in 2023 ( which is higher than approx 10 franchises entire payrolls

The guy is spending $150M per year more than the most expensive payroll in North American history.

The guy is handing out deals that are significantly longer than market value and changing the landscape of player contracts in our favorite sport.

The guy is changing the paradigm of not having a well run franchise to be competitive, just buy talent and force your competitors to do the same, driving prices even higher.

It is newsworthy event that will potentially change baseball forever. When one person spends north of $850M in a single offseason, it merits discussion.

And finally, the money he spends will force other teams to spend more and every dollar spent will have to be defrayed by rising costs to attend games or purchase streaming options to view games. While you may see him as spending his money, most of us are intelligent enough to know we ultimately pay the player's salary. He is investing his money to improve the value of his franchise. We are spending our money to consume his product. Ipso facto, he is spending our money

Oh man, those poor billionaires. And those poor fans who complain about a $10 ticket increase, but who would also complain about a losing season. There is no pleasing some people.

If you don't want to pay the outrageous amounts for tickets, concessions, parking, cable, etc., you don't have to. No one is forcing you.

I know this has been discussed before, but what would it take to trade for Reynolds? I assume it would be one of Garcia, Urquidy, Brown or Javier. Plus 2-3 of our top positional prospects. I'd be in favor of including Garcia or Urquidy, maybe even Brown. No way on Javier.

Can the Yankees come up with a better package than us?
