So we renewed our girls Astros Buddies membership to throw have some Astros swag to throw under the tree and this was included.

Thanks Jim

Not that I want that, but, my toddler's buddies club box came today also, no autograph card. Just the normal hat jersey bag lanyard

Congrats on winning a lottery, I guess?

Yankees DFA'd our local boy this afternoon. Has put up solid numbers past two years and would fit in well in the bullpen. We know how dusty likes his left handed relievers…

If I recall correctly, isn't he the king of soft contact?

God, Cohen looks like such a putz. I bet he's eating up all this celebrity sports adulation. It would be a mighty shame if the long knives of the NY press came out if the Mets stumble at all. I mean that would be a damn shame, wouldn't it.

I actually picked ours up from MMP last week, but no card in ours either. Figured I wasn't paying $12/each for shipping when I pass right by MMP most days and wanted to have them for Christmas too.

We haven't received their membership cards in the mail yet.

So Heyman was on 790 this evening and they were talking to him about Correa.

He said Correa still has to pass his physical with the Mets.

What if something comes up again? Do they Mets back out or do they just not GAF and they just want him?

Led the league…. His spin rate and movement on his pitches is no joke.

Led the league. Also in top of league in spin rate for several of his pitches. Not throwing hard but it can't be squared up.

I'm poking fun at Costas, definitely not your boy. Have always thought he's a solid BP piece.

Can someone explain to me why you guys are so concerned with a guy spending money that is not yours, on a team you don't care to support? No one has yet to answer me this. What alternative did he have but to spend? I doubt most of you know what the roster situation was this offseason. Further, I doubt most, if anyone here knows the farm situation. He has what amounts to basically unlimited resources, but he isn't allowed to make his team better? How many of you would do the same if you were in his position?

It is a relevant conversation about a team spending $500 million per season on payroll in an industry with a soft cap of $230 million.

The guy will have $111M tax bill in 2023 ( which is higher than approx 10 franchises entire payrolls

The guy is spending $150M per year more than the most expensive payroll in North American history.

The guy is handing out deals that are significantly longer than market value and changing the landscape of player contracts in our favorite sport.

The guy is changing the paradigm of not having a well run franchise to be competitive, just buy talent and force your competitors to do the same, driving prices even higher.

It is newsworthy event that will potentially change baseball forever. When one person spends north of $850M in a single offseason, it merits discussion.

And finally, the money he spends will force other teams to spend more and every dollar spent will have to be defrayed by rising costs to attend games or purchase streaming options to view games. While you may see him as spending his money, most of us are intelligent enough to know we ultimately pay the player's salary. He is investing his money to improve the value of his franchise. We are spending our money to consume his product. Ipso facto, he is spending our money

Who's concerned?

We're laughing at him. Just like we would any team that threw around money like this.

They had a huge payroll last year and they didn't even win a division and got bounced in the NLDS.

It's funny to see teams throw ungodly amounts of money and however many years it takes to sign guys thinking they can just buy a WS. Hell the Dodgers and all their money only have 1 ring in a fluke 60 game season.

It's comical. But hey...By all means keep it up. His luxury tax is filling Crane's pockets.

"Soft Cap"...no

The guy will have $111M tax bill in 2023 ( which is higher than approx 10 franchises entire payrolls

This is the start of his third year of ownership, he wants to win, and has the resources to field a competitive team. To put the tax bill in perspective. This $111M tax bill for him is the equivalent of a $660 dollar tax bill for someone with a net worth of $100,000.

The guy is spending $150M per year more than the most expensive payroll in North American history.

He chooses to spend to field a competitive team. Others could as well, but choose not to. They treat it as a business, while Cohen treats the Mets as a tax write off / hobby.

The guy is handing out deals that are significantly longer than market value and changing the landscape of player contracts in our favorite sport.

Incorrect

Judge: 9/360
Bogarts: 11/280
Turner: 11/300
Rodon: 6/162
deGrom: 5/185

This is the way it is done now to keep the AAV lower. It is pure manipulation for CBT purposes, nothing more. There are a number of other deals that are stretched out as well, but they are not as massive as these deals.

The guy is changing the paradigm of not having a well run franchise to be competitive, just buy talent and force your competitors to do the same, driving prices even higher.

This is not what he is doing. The Mets have been terribly ran for the last 3 decades. Previous ownership did not invest anything in the organization, especially after the Madoff situation. His long term vision is his to have a balance of young guys and veterans. That is not feasible right now. While the payroll will always be near the top, it will not remain where it is now.

It is newsworthy event that will potentially change baseball forever. When one person spends north of $850M in a single offseason, it merits discussion.

Fair, but what exactly should he have done? Sign Sign AAAA players to just get through the next couple of years and hope that the farm players develop? If this is the path he would have gone down, he would have been blasted by everyone, including Met fans. The way he is doing it he his only getting blasted by 65% of baseball fans. What would you do if you were in his position? What would you want the Astros to do if they were in the Mets position? No need to answer, you would want them to do the exact same thing.

I understood most of this, and agree to an extent. In most cases this is true, not in the Mets case. Again, this is his hobby, he is losing money with this payroll, which he openly admitted. I would venture to guess concessions, merchandise etc is on par with every other player / team in MLB. Example, deGrom jerseys are selling for $195. "He is spending our money.." How much of his $18B fortune did you contribute to?
Bottom line, while you may see it as buying a championship, nothing is guaranteed. Having the best players simply increases your odds of making the playoffs. Once you get there, anything can happen. "Laugh" at him all you want, but the fact is every single one of you would do the exact same thing.

One thing I would like to mention before I get **** on further....I am not a fan of this type of spending either. I didn't like when the Yankees did it, didn't like when the Dodgers did / do it, Phillies, Padres, etc, so I would be a hypocrite if I thought it was okay now. I do not. However, I know that is not what he will do long term. Plus they are the team I invest in, so I don't have to like the spending, but can still support the team.

Best Lineups in Baseball

3. Astros

1) Jose Altuve, 2B
2) Jeremy Peña, SS
3) Yordan Alvarez, LF
4) Alex Bregman, 3B
5) Kyle Tucker, RF
6) Jos Abreu, 1B
7) Michael Brantley, DH
8) Chas McCormick, CF
9) Martn Maldonado, C

The Astros ranked sixth in the Majors in wRC+ (112) and eighth in runs (737) in 2022, and that was without the RBI machine known as Abreu and with Brantley's sweet swing on the shelf for all but 64 games. Both of those guys are getting older, so that must be taken into account. But on the flip side, Alvarez, Tucker and Peña are really just beginning to come into their own. The Astros' beautiful blend of discipline and power gives them a strong argument to be No. 1 on this list, and they might well be there by the end of the season.

That settles it guys, no more discussing the Mets. Nitro has thoroughly and succinctly refuted any and all talking points and their moves are not noteworthy or topical.

I guess we can reconvene in 65 days when spring training commences or relegate ourselves to discussing the weather.
