Yes, most billionaires are dip****s...

He doesn't care if the Mets make money. He was a fan of them since he was little, and he makes enough money in a year, he can cover the payroll and still have money left over. Not sure why you guys are so upset with his spending...

I know the guy is rich, like 16 billion net worth rich, but even with that kind of money I'm not sure a half billion dollar payroll is sustainable. I mean Elon doesn't seem to mind setting 100 billion on fire, but I figured a buttoned down hedge fund guy probably isn't as loose with his money.
Which means he is probably off-setting it with admissions/concessions/merch

Next year only 25-65 M come off the books depending on options. Then in '25, it could be another 120 M/ (assuming ~65 the year before). It'll come down, but they'll need to replace a bunch of these guys.

Here is the fallacy in that...guys in roster positions 22-26 like those guys are may mean the difference in winning 102 games and 108 games. But those guys never sniff the field in the postseason so why does it really matter?

Cohen really smacks of the kid who watches his 2 neighbors get the best toy in the world for Christmas (Braves & Phillies going to the World Series) and starts whining about wanting the same thing. But instead of having to beg his parents, he's got access to billions of dollars.

Reminds me of Francis in Pee Wee's Big Adventure. "Today's my birthday and my father said I could have anything I wanted."
"Oh, really, so what do you want?"
"Your bike."

If it goes south, it does bear watching that Lindor doesn't have a full no-trade clause until 2026. He can only veto 15 teams from now until the end of 2025.

He also has $50 million deferred past 2031. $5 million per year from 2032-2041.So for a few years there, they will be playing both Bobby Bonilla, whose last payment year is 2034, and Francisco Lindor, millions of dollars to not play for them.

That's 2032-2034, when Lindor will be 39-41 years old, and Bonilla, who, I saw play with the Pirates in 1987, will be 68-71 years old.

I hope the Mets exit in the Wild Card round. I get an owner spending money; but it also magnifies the problem with baseball.

1. Not much of that Mets roster will be organically developed. Where is the skill in just throwing stupid money at a roster?

2. I am old, but I will say it's bad for baseball to only focus on the NY teams, Boston, and the Dodgers. It's best for any sport to have competition to maintain interest. I don't want to follow a sport where the only teams that will have a chance are the ones I mentioned because they have the money.

3. At some point, this WILL affect the Astros. Some will say it already has with the ridiculous contract the Mets made to Verlander.

4. Never forget 1986. **** the Mets. I hope they all get herpes.

Looking forward to the Astros beating the Mets in the World Series.
yes, this would continue the trend of playing NL East teams in the WS.

and continue the trend of paying back teams from 1980's playoff defeats

No, not for wanting to get paid. Just generally a turd.

It's going to implode in NYC and he's going to show his ass. Are you really going to be shocked when it happens?

it feels like the Giants dodged a major bullet here.

would not want to be tied to Correa for 13 years --- that is a very, very long time.

SF can be a major player in the Ohtani sweepstakes now

I'm curious how he's going to show his ass? He's been pretty professional, in my opinion. Dumb comment about Dior aside.

They were a .500 team last year and look to be worse. Why would Ohtani consider another loser? They need big times players and missed out on the 2 they targeted.
Harry Dunne
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Just a feeling, based on his entire body of work off the field. For the most part aside from injuries things have gone his way and he has played in two markets where the media is extremely benign.

I know most you don't agree so I'll drop it, but I'm willing to bet that when the New York media attacks him, which inevitably they will, it will get ugly.

Why would Ohtani consider another loser?

because of $$$$ and ease of travel back to Asia. Those are two reasons I can think of.

I could see it because he's not afraid to speak his mind, but he also has a polish about him where he can handle the media. He's a sharp guy and showed how professional he could be with his TV appearances. In NY he's just 1 of many. Lindow, Verlander, Alonso, Scherzer, Nimmo, Marte, Diaz.

Dodgers, Padres, and Mariners can offer that plus winning. He's made it very clear he regrets not doing more due diligence before signing last time.

true, but a lot can happen between now and then. I am not saying he will sign with SF, but I am saying he will obviously listen to an offer from them if they choose to make one.

I can see a scenario where 4 teams throw ridiculous money at him, and he picks the one with best winning odds even if slightly lower in terms of money. He's gonna get paid, even if he takes a little less from a better team.

It's Cohen's money and he can do with it as he pleases. I agree, everyone complains about cheap owners and the lack of spending. Cohen goes and spends and makes people jealous. He wants to win.

Imagine the increase in team value the Mets will have once they win a ship again. 36 seasons since their last.

Flip side is, that is a hell of a lot of money for a guy that has average 111 games played in his 8 big league years. CC wins with this contract. Cohen, Giants, and any team for that matter should have offered more money but for less years. 6yrs/$192mm or something. When teams can see how healthy he is, but the Mets are screwed with him most likely come 2027/2028 seasons.

Great deal for Correa. I will always be a fan after his outspoken defense of the Stros. Now he gets to go torment the Yankees, and be on a team with some familiar faces. Good for him, and I am sure the Mrs. loves the idea of being in New York.

I just struggle with the insanity of the Mets hearing there's a medical issue and thinking, "OK, we'll ONLY give him 12 years for $315 million. That's smart."

Usually when you hear about a team giving 2 shortstops an insane amount of money, you figure it's got to be the Rangers.
