I know inflation is a real thing with these salaries… but damn.

Biggio had career earnings of like $80 million. A hall of famer. Now you have Correa getting $400+ in a career. There are guys making half of Biggio's career in a year. And his career only ended 15 years ago.

Look ~15 years before Biggio. Robin Yount made 18 M. Both comparisons are about 5x.

I know the stats. It's still weird to adjust a mindset to, even understanding the progression. It's definitely outpacing non-athlete salaries.

I wonder when (and who) the first billion dollar career earned will be in baseball.

what's crazy is that the spending is going on in the NL East and NL West, but not in the NL Central

We will resign Brantley while monitoring the Reynolds situation to see if the market cools.

We will also resign Yuli.

We will not make any non team controlled moves while giving up too much with Bregs, Framber, Tucker and Javier decisions on the horizon.

Our core is strong enough now with Peña's development that no unnecessary risk are necessary with the contracts coming up and without hurting what is still one of the best pitching staffs from top to bottom in the MLB.

Bottom line is nothing has happened in the American League to make me fearful of anyone in the AL. Only the Yankees adding a serious starting pitching addition would cause me slight concern.

I also think Crane has been playing quite a bit of 4D chess.

We've been "in on" quite a few free agents that we had no intention of signing but to only drive up those contracts.

This creates a lot of teams going into complete rebuild mode that could possibly lower the cost of any trades for quality players still under team control that those teams know they probably can't afford when their contracts are up.

Crane is simply trying to control and lower any possible future trade needs should Brantley not come back quick enough or Lee not develop fast enough.

It's 4D chess/Texas Hold 'Em and I trust Jim Crane.

I recognize the most shallow HR...I believe that's the mile high HR against LA in '17 WS game 5.

Some notable salary leaders in MLB history and that salary adjusted for inflation to today's dollars

1912 Honus Wagner $10,000 / $300,718

1930 Babe Ruth $80,000 / $1.42 million

Interesting note, after Ruth retired, the highest salary in the league dropped to $31,000 (Lou Gehrig) and was down to $25,000 (Lou Boudreau) at the end of World War II

1949 Joe DiMaggio $100,000 / $1.25 million

1967 Willie Mays $125,000 / $1.14 million

Mays was the first black player to be the league's highest paid player, starting in 1959.

1973 Dick Allen $200,000 / $1.34 million

1977 Mike Schmidt $560,000 / $2.75 million

This was a giant leap. The year before, Hank Aaron was the leader at $240,000

1979 Rod Carew $800,000 / $3.65 million

1980 Nolan Ryan $1 m / $3.62 million (thanks Jimmy Carter!)

1985 Mike Schmidt $2.096 million / $5.81 million

1990 Robin Yount $3.2 million / $7.29 million

1992 Bobby Bonilla $6.2 million / $12.73 million (totally worth it)

1995 Cecil Fielder $9.24 million / $18.05 million

1997 Albert Belle $10 million / $18.55 million

2001 Alex Rodriguez $22 million / $37 million

2010 Alex Rodriguez $30 million / $40.1 million

None of these guys are going to get any cheaper. We should be looking to invest in our guys now. Pay them and get them thru their prime. Avoid the late 30s & 40s. I hope we're forward thinking because losing Bregman in 25 then Tucker, Framber, & Javier in 26 is going to hurt like hell if we're not going to play the long term contract game.

You have to draft well and find cheap new talent.

It's tough to keep something like this together especially when other teams will pay almost anything to get players.

Damn good for CC

But here's the deal on why I don't think that contract is as bad as it looks. Yeah it's long and yeah no way he plays up to it for that long.

If he only plays up to it for half of the years and he's unproductive for the second half by that time $27mm will be chump change. They'll be able to eat that easily or be able to trade that easily.

Hell $27mm per is a good value now much less 6-7 years from now. That'll be chump change.

Seems to me like this is a good win-win contract. CC gets his security and the Giants get their man at a managable AAV.

Inflation must be really hurting these players. Glad to see the owners stepping up and making sure that they can make ends meat.

I don't think would remove the Giants. They're still under the tax and have ~80 M coming off the books next year. I do think the Dodgers will go all out for him.

NL West should be fun to watch the next few years with LA,SF, and SD spending big. Throw in the Mets and it will be fun to see them crying come World Series time wondering why their expensive ass players didn't pay off for them since only one can win the pennant.

You want to know why we haven't been more aggressive with these rumored trades for a few different outfielders?

Go back and watch the complete 2021 WS highlights. Yes McCullers wasn't there but, we are so gung ho on Framber and Javier as we should be but, Urquidy is the only one that pitched worth a damn that entire series.

Framber, Javier and Garcia got lit up pretty good so while I'll love our staff and where it's at right now, I love our staff even more without having to give up even Urquidy. Hell in the last 2 years each one of them has looked great at times and rocked a few times in big moments.

So, imho, until we know exactly what Hunter is going to look like halfway through the year, I'm not giving up Jose or Garcia when I believe Brantley will be fine. Dude works harder than anyone in the game to get his body right and back.

yes, but father time has never lost a battle. I think Brantley will play about 80ish games a season here on out. Astros need Benintendi.

NL Central is being gutted to the point that everyone is going to be sellers on the cheap this year minus maybe the Redbirds.

Realistically you've got 8-9 times in the NL in rebuild mode. Someone is going to be looking for trade steals with quality guys who are up in year or two.

I guess man. Sure have seen JV, Pujols, Miggy and quite a few others kick father times ass lately. This isn't the 80's anymore. Surgery, recovery and nutrition aren't what they used to be.

Sure take Benintendi, but at what costs? Does it dip into Framber, Valdez, tucker or Bregman money somehow. If so, hard pass right now. We're still back in the ALCS this year with our staff and no major injuries.

13 years for a player with 1 healthy season.

Nice.
Some of you saying it's going to be a bad contract by the back half. Agree, but it might be a bad contract as soon as this season. Playing in the cold with a bad back and a lot of pressure. He handles in-game pressure beautifully but off the field pressure he hasn't been so great with historically. And that's what he's going to get if he comes out of the gate slow, which he tends to do. Or if he gets hurt, which he tends to do.

I don't like it for him.
