How do you figure? AAV may be lower than initial talk but the years here are absolutely absurd

The RedSox are what could have happened to us.

Won a title in 17 = won a title in 18
Springer left = Mookie traded before he left
Correa left = Bogaerts left
JV TJ = Sale Injuries
Keuchel decline & left = Price decline & trade

But we found ways to add better pieces and develop from within.

The years are huge, but with inflation that dollar amount is gonna have less and less value as time goes on. Think of how expensive things were in 2012, and compare that to now. That's year 1 vs year 11. I know, it's still a lot of money, but in athlete terms, it doesn't go as far.

I guess if his goal was length, then he got what he wanted. If that's the case then good for him.

Not many shortstops still available and there are several teams still looking. Is Carlos getting paid or getting played?

I'm thinking paid. Giants, Twins, Cubs, and now maybe the Red Sox. It's Carlos and Swanson.

I think Correa is looking to get that Lindor money.

The last 5 years of that deal are basically 5/126 for a guy who very likely could age out of SS. Age 37-41. That's a boat anchor.

Lol teams throwing stupid money around. Astros just won their 2nd WS with their two best pitchers from the Dominican signed for $10K each.

Yordan Alvarez, the best player in base-ball, will be making much less than quite a few bums. That saddens me, somewhat.

I wonder if Philly who has Boston's old GM now will be in a similar situation before too long.

It's never really clear to me on those distances. Is it where it landed or a projected distance if the flight wasn't obstructed? If it's the latter, then no way that ball was only 450.

I feel like John Smoltz said on the broadcast that is like someone hitting a ball 500 feet down the line. There has to be some sort of formula out there that accounts for the velocity a ball leaves the bat at, how rapidly it decelerate, and how many feet per second it travels as it loses velocity. You would have to factor in the angle of its trajectory and how high up it was when it hit. Not sure anyone other than a surveyor or someone who works at Minute Maid could figure that part out

I'm fairly certain they take the exit velocity and launch angle and get the HR distances from that. They don't take into account wind, spin on the ball, etc

I know this is petty and I should be more thankful for his huge part in the two championships and just leave it at that, but chasing money this late in his career when he's got so much already instead of staying here and really cementing the dynasty rubs me the wrong way.

I just want him to ufck off to New York already and let's move on.

Go ahead and flame my ungrateful ass. I deserve it.
Besides owning the Yankees in the postseason he really didn't do much and certainly cost us 2 games in the 2019 WS.

Yes he was nails in the regular season but was hurt for two years and you would think the $60 million he was getting paid would be worth it to him to be in the dugout mentoring younger pitchers or just show up to show his support, but nope.

I hope he flames out and the NY press eats both Mr. Upton and his hot wife alive.

One of JV's gifts is his day-in, day out competitiveness. I think he's in the top echelon of big leaguers in that category. He preps hard and brings his best every time he takes the mound. Over the course of the 162, he has a natural advantage built in. In June, July and August, JV can dominate lesser teams who aren't matching his level of prep/intensity.

When the playoffs roll around, that advantage is negated. Every lineup is talented and every player is bringing their 100% best. And he can't rely on elite stuff anymore to give him a postseason edge. He still has very good stuff, but not Framber/Javier level elite.

Mariners and Phillies could generally foul off his "out pitches" and force him to eventually give in... generally with the fastball. If Framber/Javier make their pitch, opponents can't touch it. I think that's why most of us felt more comfortable/confident with them on the mound in October than JV, even though JV was our regular season CY guy.

Like I said in a previous post, I think JV will still be good with the Mets and have a nice regular season. Probly 16-8 with a sub-3 ERA. But I don't think his October issues are going away. I think this was the right time for us to let him walk and redeploy our resources elsewhere, especially given that we've got a natural replacement for his spot in the rotation with Brown.

I wonder how much of that 11 year deal was the Padres getting stiffed by Turner and others and they decided they couldn't take the PR hit of being stiff again and they went on tilt mode. A 6 or 7 year deal for a 30 year old SS is sketchy. 11 is malpractice.

I think the same reasons can be made why I think Correa will get signed by the dodgers. Cant let the Padres still all the spotlight...

This is madness.

He started the first game in the DS in 17 against a very good Sox team. He pitched great while Sale got destroyed by Altuve. Then get came back for game 4 and bridged it from Morton to Giles to close the series out.

I am not sure why you're dismissing his 5 games vs NY from 17-22, but he threw a CG to put us up 2-0 then 7 shuttie in an elimination game. Giant balls!

While he didn't win either game he started in the WS, he gave us 2 quality starts vs a stacked Dodger team with juiced baseballs.

There is probably a less than 1% chance we win the WS in 2017 without JV.

Pitched 19 games (18 starts) as an Astro in the postseason. He went 9-6 with a 3.87 ERA. He averaged 6 IP per start. That's not the best, but its pretty damn good. Compare him to his peers that played in Houston.

Cole 10-6 2.94 ERA
Framber 7-2 3.41 ERA
McCullers 2-3 3.47
Morton 7-5 3.46
Keuchel 4-3 3.71

---

How can you go from cheering for this game for 6 years then immediately flip the switch because Houston didn't offer him anything close to what another team did? I don't get this kind of hate.

Lots of big names to ponder but depending on how many pitchers we carry we may still need a utility guy to go along with Dubon and Hensley on the bench. We seem to like players that can play both infield and outfield. Any predictions on who we would potentially go after, if we do. None of these guys are exciting at all but will be cheap.

Adam Frazier 2B/OF - has been a decent player but rough year last year
Brian Anderson 3B/OF - showed promise in 2019 but has been injured and largely ineffective since
Garrett Hampson 2B/SS/OF and gives you some speed if you can live with the horrible contact skills and no power
