You disagree? They let JV walk with no fight and have done nothing this off season to show they want to get better.
sublime troll job.

You write things like I want to write on the Rangers thread when I read that they are "reconsidering their October plans" now because of their big time moves…

But I'm not a big enough a-hole to pile on their misery.

Unpopular take - I think NY will be good next year. Not 116 wins good, but win the AL East and be better positioned at the end of the year than they were in 2022.

And I think they're in a position to stay good for 2-4 years if young guys coming up (Volpe & Peraza) to go along with more "cap space" after 2023.
I disagree. As of right now I don't think they make the playoffs.

LF, 3B, and SS are all black holes. Not to mention their starting pitching is average at best. The lose of Tallion will be big imo. Cole should be fine, Nestor is hit or miss. Montas sucks.

DH-Stanton is glass and will most likely miss at least 40% of the games.

If they don't shore up the infield and find a left fielder they will struggle. I fully expect Judge to drop off a bit after this past season.

Remember when we didn't want to give Verlander 40 million over one or two years. Now the Yankees will do it for the next nine years.
it's a terrible contract no doubt about it, this is just in general aside:

I'm not sure if the salary inflation can possibly continue, but one thing I think people underestimate on these long contracts is that $40M nine years from now won't be as big of a deal if things continue to trend in this direction.

Nine years ago A-Rod's $28 million was the highest salary in baseball. That's not even 65% of Max Scherzer's salary this year.

I can't imagine any universe in which a near 40 year old Judge is going to be worth 65% of the max, but that's another topic.
This is crazy to think about. If this trend continued players will be signing $80 million a year contracts. Scares me to think about how much tickets will be much less how much the fees will be to buy the tickets.

Eh...They're also gonna have the boat anchors of Stanton and Donaldson still around just getting older. You've also got Hicks in there too getting old and ineffective. LeMahieu is a big question mark as well.

I don't think they the Yankees are a very complementary lineup. It's just a mash up of once good players who they just slap together with no real cohesion.

I don't think they're bad but I don't think they're gonna be any better than they've been in years past.

There's got to be a point at which people refuse to pay the prices, but they are definitely going to push until we get there.

If Ohtani has another year this year like his past two years, his contract will be insane.

I am of the opinion the Yankees should have let Judge walk to San Fran, took the beating from fans for a year, and signed Ohtani next year.

Two birds with one stone for them. And Ohtani with that short porch…
1,000% Ohtani over Judge for 9/360.

I wonder what Ohtani is going to get. He'll be a year younger than Judge when he hits Free Agency. Only thing that could hurt him is if he gets hurt again and teams get worried about injuries.

I have a couple of months to work on the delivery to make it a little smoother. Just wanted to give a line that could be brought up later. I am sure there are some here that still think I want the to trade Bregman (which I do immediately, for anything).

With that said, I think the Astros are doing just fine. There was no reason to sign JV for that amount of money and the Abreu signing is great. The concern will be if the are going to over pay for Contreras.

With the way fans suck down beer at those prices I am assuming we have a long way to go before the real pushback starts

Basically, whatever Rodon gets (I'll guess 168/6) plus Yordan's extension (post arb years ~26.8) should be about what Ohtani's worth before you factor in the star power he brings. He could get an easy 50+ M per year and I'm not sure if it would be an overpay. That is why he should win MVP every single year. He's 2 elite players in one. The risk is high because an injury takes our 2 stars, not 1.

If we can get Contreras I don't see it as overpaying. Catching is at a premium in MLB and Maldy is on his last leg.

I'd rather not run out a JR Towles type again. Give me someone I KNOW who can play an elite catcher. Not someone we hope can play catcher.

What kind of deal is Rodon reported to be seeking? I assume SF will be more willing/interested since they're not getting Judge.

I think Ohtani will get $50MM per easily.

Predictions were ~5/140, but I think he's getting a 6th year. He's a Boras guy.

FWIW- based off everything I'm hearing, Houston will never want Contreras catching more than 50% of the games during the season

Postseason Judge:
.211 BA
.310 OBP
.462 SLG
.772 OPS

Last 3 years (no juiced ball)
.143 BA
.208 OBP
.357 SLG
.565 OPS

Vs HOU
.200 BA
.287 OBP
.415 SLG
.702

$40 is a lot of money to give a guy who can't match Yuli Gurriel.

Is this a problem as long as he's the main catcher in the post season and can DH or play LF when not catching?

He's dual insurance for catching and in case Brantley isn't healthy

Few thoughts on Judge.

1. An absolute win if you're the Astros because one of your constant competitors for AL domination has tied themselves to a really bad contract. Judge's record-breaking year without a WS appearance and/or title to go with put them in the impossible position of signing him and hamstringing themselves or letting him walk and being much worse in the short term with fan anarchy. Would love to make ourselves a prediction chart on Judge's next 9 seasons - how many times does he break 50 HR, how many times does he play 150 games, to see the law of averages play out on the contract.

2. Shows that they've learned nothing from the Pujols and Cabrera deals a decade ago.

3. I really am curious why the owners of MLB don't band together and say, we're not offering anyone more than 5 years. They're eating themselves by doing it this way.

4. Steroids or Goldilocks balls or whatever, with Judge's height and weight, when he has that first slow step moment come in his 30s, it's going to get ugly quick. If you look historically at tall sluggers (6-6 and over), when the bat speed drops in their mid 30s but they're still trying to pull those long arms around, they can't catch up anymore and the power vanishes.

Adam Dunn was 6-6 and had reached 418 home runs at the end of his 33 year old season, a lock to reach 500. He lost his bat speed the next year, only hit 22 homers in 131 games and retired.

Frank Howard, was 6-8 and hit 44, 48, and 44 homers in his 31-33 year old seasons in the late 60s/early 70s. Bat speed dropped off at age 34 and he hit 26 in 153 games, then only 22 over the final 194 games of his career and retired at 36.

I'm loathe to include Darryl Strawberry (6 foot 6) because of his drug problems and back problems being a big factor, but he hit between 26 and 39 home runs for the first 9 years of his career in a row (ages 21-29), then hit 52 over the rest of his career, with only one season above 11.

Tony Clark was 6 foot 8 - had HR seasons of 27, 32, 34, and 31 in his 20s. Only hit 30 once in his 30s, that at age 33, never had more than 17 in any other year of his 30s.

Conteras is telling teams that he can be a better hitter with less time behind the plate. The Astros agree with that. He would split time between DH and C if he came to Houston. Maybe a few games in left.

That being said, he would be the primary catcher in the postseason.

Isn't Contreras on board with this?

Thought I read somewhere he's OK with that since he hits better when not catching and is OK extending his career with less time behind the plate.

Peter Seidler (owner) is the grandson of Walter O'Malley, the guy who moved the Dodgers to LA and owned them from 1950-1979. He clearly wants to live up to the family name; Grandpappy's club made it to the World Series 11 times and won it 4 times.

He's also the managing partner of his own private equity firm that has enough money to buy 10 Aaron Judges if it wanted to.
