1) We're not paying him that much
2) He's no threat to us on the Mets

Even though this was expected, it's still sad to see the news. When Scherzer signed his insane contract last year, it was pretty evident that JV would want the same if he had a big year (which he did). And it was pretty obvious that Crane wasn't going to give it to him.
Not worried about the Astros at all though. Looking forward to seeing our next moves.

$43.3M per year
Full no trade
3rd year option: at $35M
I don't think losing Justin Verlander puts the Astros in the pitching market. The prices right now are huge and Houston has Framber Valdez, Lance McCullers Jr, Cristian Javier, Luis Garcia, José Urquidy and Hunter Brown coming back.

Mets at Astros, June 19-21 next year. Verlander ring presentation, I presume.

Franklin Perez, Daz Cameron and Jake Rogers have combined for 0.5 bWAR. Perez hasn't pitched in the majors. Cameron isn't on a 40-man roster. Rogers is recovering from elbow surgery.

Two guys pushing 40 at the top off your rotation seems risky.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I think Contreras will cost too much for too long. Signing him would hurt chances to extend key young guys.
Get brantley and roll with maldy/young catcher. If there's a vet pitcher available for a good shirt deal (cueto?) maybe do that but has to be a good team friendly deal so unlikely.

It's going to be odd seeing JV as a met. I'm happy for him, it's just going to be weird

Although it's unlikely, I hope he goes in to the HoF wearing an H
The Lance question is the biggest now with our starting pitching. Do we see the Lance of old that gets wins in post season.OKCAg2002 said:
I'd like to see us pick up one more starting pitcher veteran as an insurance policy if at all possible. LMJ's injury history is a real concern. And I think the 6 man rotation may be here to stay.
Framber, Javier, LMJ, Brown, Garcia, and Urquidy is pretty good. I know that they want to experiment with Abreu as a SP, so that could provide some depth, too.
Assuming Abreu is staying in the pen, it wouldn't surprise me if we bring in a couple vets on NRI deals to spring training to compete with the young guys for #7 duties.OKCAg2002 said:
