I will be a bit bummed if JV signs a 2-year deal elsewhere. I get $40M+ per year is definitely high, 2 years vs. 3 years is much more palatable. 3 years is a non-starter for me.

We don't need him with our rotation depth, especially at that price / that many years. He's done great things here, but he's a hired assassin. This next contract is his retirement plan, and putting him in NY with the mets pretty much guarantees he won't be a playoff threat.

Was looking at Reynolds and thought he might be a CF who transitiions to corner soon, but it looks like 2022 is an outlier.

He's not really slowing down speed-wise, but how often does someone drop 92% points without some kind of crazy injury?

I'm not saying it's logical, but I assumed we would lose out to a team who who give him a 3 year deal. I get we have depth, but I'd still rather we have JV than not IF the circumstances were right.

Its the same feeling we all had with Correa last year. All the BS then he signs the risky dink deal with the twins we all say the money shouldn't matter, but the guy is soon to retire and barring some terrible tragedy probably has another 40 years or more of life left. If I have certain expectations foe my lifestyle for the rest of my days with my supermodel wife and young kid, I like the idea of $87 million instead of $60 million for the next 2 years too. I've got 2 rings, let me get paid ad much as possible.

Does a 3rd year "mutual" option mean they both have to agree to it, or that either side can opt in?

Why wouldn't I be serious? Although my math was off. But if I'm going to be retiring soon and living the rest of my life off my investments, I'd like the option when I have $87 million instead of $70 million.

$43.4M per year...yeah I don't think Crane will go anywhere near that nor should he. What's odd is that would be the team I hate the least out of the Dodgers/Yankees/Mets...I guess time does heal all wounds.

What's great is it's yet another NL East team we would face in the World Series and we would get to feast on World Series Justin.

Basically a 2yr deal. I can't recall too many Mutual Options being used.

I think JV is posturing on the 3-year deal talk...trying to get his max 2-year deal. Anybody signing him to a 3-year deal is some kind of stupid. (And they are probably stupid for signing him to a $75-$85 million 2-year deal.)

I say the Astros should not make him an embarrassing offer (2 years....$50-$60 million) and just tell him to have a nice end to his career (i.e. call his bluff). And then quickly spend that money on other guys. Oh wait...they just did.

$43 million EACH for 2023 and 2024 to Verlander and Scherzer.

$86 million of your yearly payroll for 2 guys who will play 28-32 times a year.

Now that we have closure, I'm all aboard the Contreras train. Sign Brantley to a team friendly deal and allow him to be a role player as the left handed bat.

Even though this was expected, it's still sad to see the news. When Scherzer signed his insane contract last year, it was pretty evident that JV would want the same if he had a big year (which he did). And it was pretty obvious that Crane wasn't going to give it to him.

Not worried about the Astros at all though. Looking forward to seeing our next moves.

This seems like a as good a move as possible for us. Crane held strong without a GM and didn't overpay for JV and JV isn't in the AL or with the Dodgers.
