Summary

TLDR:. Seems like he'll get a 9 year deal, over $300m. Giants are after him. Dodgers want him but only if he'll take a short deal with high AAV. Some other teams in the mix, but he didn't know who.

Still, crazy to think what the differential between Yordan's and Judge's contracts will be. What an absolute steal Yordan continues to be.

Yordan had like 3 different careers' worth of clutch postseason hits in the playoffs.

Goes to show that not all players are chasing the highest contracts.

Yordan still had 3 years of arbitration, he locked in generational money with zero risk

If he was still playing for pennies until his FA contract, he would be going for all the money

Piscotty from the Cardinals to the A's is one I remember reading about recently

I wonder if the Astros can afford to give up a starter like Garcia or Urquidy even with Brown waiting to take a spot in the rotation. We could always trade for an arm later if needed or sign another.

Urquidy is a nice security blanket, and certain is needed over the long regular season...but to me there is something wasteful about having someone like him on a postseason roster with no impact, especially when there are some deficiencies in our lineup

There are some deficiencies but the main one was addressed by signing Abreu. I'd be willing to move Urquidy but don't see him as simply a luxury as the 6th starter. If we resign JV though…..

Maybe I misunderstood your post, but when you replied "apparently not" to the line about the fastest path to declining is cheating - I took it as some ranger fan hating on the World Champions.

My apologies if I misunderstood it.

The Astros rotation was remarkably healthy this past year. Lose JV and trade away Urquidy or Garcia, and that depth suddenly becomes very shallow. Save the first game in Philly, no team could touch our pitching. It just kept coming in waves and strangled offenses (18 shut out innings, anyone?!). We have witnessed the impact of suspect pitching in the playoffs. It better be a hella upgrade to get rid of pitching, and even then I don't see the need. The Astros are already elite so the marginal gain is smaller and smaller. Just my opinion.

I love Texas Aggie sports, but I love Texas A&M more.

Very much agree. The 6 man rotation kept guys a little fresher and maybe helped prevent some possible injuries.

You also have to take into account what you're expecting from LMJ. While I'm a fan of his he has injury history that does concern me.

I agree. If we're gonna trade Urquidy and also not retain JV, I'm guessing we'll pickup a starter.

I'm not sold that Abreu to the rotation is a real thing, but if it is, that would work. Could also bring in Kluber or Cueto on short term deal.

Going forward, we'd be left with Framber, LMJ, Javier, Brown and LuAce… all of whom are locked up for 3+ more years. We can continue to fill the sixth spot with vets who want a ring and buy time for some of our minor league arms to develop (none of whom seem ready for the show rn).

I'd do it. Although I think Chas or Meyers should be used as trade pieces in a potential Reynolds deal, since we wouldn't need both anymore.

I wouldn't. Assuming we don't resign JV, I wouldn't trade any of our SPs .

I'm just so nervous losing any of our pitchers. I mean, JV is a horse and he is gone (by all accounts). So we are going all in on losing another starter? Who is the next man up from Corpus or Sugar Land? LMJ is good for five innings per outing- great pitcher but not efficient. One guy goes on the IL and you suddenly have 3.5 starters with no more long relievers in the pen. We'd be begging for Odorizzi to come back... let that sink in compared to this past year.

Right. Like I said before, I think we'd only do that deal if there was a plan to backfill the sixth spot in the rotation.

I'd do it if I knew for sure Hunter Brown would excel as a starter as he would essentially replace JV's absence (of course not the same way).

You would have as a rotation:
Framber
LMJ
Javier
Urquidy
Brown

I still think that's a salty rotation as Javier is a 1/2 on 90% of other clubs and if Hunter progresses he's a sneaky good 5 - Urquidy is about a #4 as you can get.

If we do encounter injuries it gets a bit rough and who knows, maybe we do experiment with Abreu as a starter or bring up another arm. If we experiment with Abreu our bully obviously takes a hit.

However, by adding Reynolds to center and Abreu to 1st you have SIGNFICANTLY upgraded our two biggest areas of need. Our LOD would be incredible, also still might be able to add Contrares. You add him and you could start a 1-9 without a single weakness, basically a pitcher having to face an all-star team each time through the order.

I'd be down giving him first crack at #7 starter (ie first man up after injury/rest), but def don't want him to be our "plan" for #6 if we lose JV and trade Urquidy/Garcia.
