43M/yr for 3 years is insanely risky for a guy in his 40s whose a Cy Young in the regular season and a 90% Loss in the playoffs.

No thanks, I think we can figure something out with our young guys if that's the asking price.

I know it might be controversial to say, but there's a good chance that JV next year would be our 3rd or maybe even 4th best pitcher with even more diwnside risk. Spending $130MM for that would be insane.

JV is too tied to the Union to take any discount. He can say he loves it here all he wants, but he really wants to drive salaries higher.

Thanks for the memories. Close the door on your way out

This crap doesn't drive salaries higher. It hurts the younger guys. Prevents buyouts of arbitration years. I'm so tired of the guys asking for massive contracts saying it's in the best interest of the players. That is so much bull*****

Just catching up on this thread. No ****ing way should we pay that much for JV. $43M/YR???? I'm glad we're "far apart".

Some of y'all are actually mad at somebody for wanting to get the most money they can?

He got two rings and Cy Young's here. I'd say he's earned it.

Agreed. No hard feelings at all. JV pitched his ass off for us and was a big part of two championships. Nothing but great memories. I'll always wish him the best.

No way Astros pay that especially since he was our worst pitcher in the playoffs.

Not mad at JV. He should absolutely try to get as much as he can. I just think the Astros could put that money into 2 or 3 different positions. We're strong at SP.

I'm not mad. I just roll my eyes about doing it in the interest of the players union as he has indicated in the past. Just say you want to get paid the most money. I respect that more.

Not mad either. We tend to forget that we all thought he was gone after 20-21 as well then suddenly he popped back up on the radar and we were all stunned. I'm not saying he's in a class by himself in all-time Astro starters, but it doesn't take long to call the roll. He's been incredible every year he's pitched for us, has the hottest WAG of all time, and has brought the energy and enthusiasm to the clubhouse and the dugout every single night. Pre-steroid knowledge, it felt like when Clemens left. For a few seasons we were blessed with one of the all-time greats who decided to hang around Houston for a little while, and damn it was one helluva ride. Much more concerned about what this board will do to replace Rally Kate.

I'll be honest, I'm a little mad. Houston and the Astros have been good to him but he's gonna be a diva and go to LA.

Prediction.
Crane is going to overspend for JV. It's not my money so I'll take it. And being aggressive with Abreu, possibly Contreras and even Brantley gives him shade that it didn't sacrifice bats to keep him. He does not want to be John McMullen giving away Nolan pt 2
If the Dodgers back up the Brinks truck for JV I think Crane will let him walk. We just paid Justin $91 million for just a single year of production. In hindsight we could have used that money elsewhere and perhaps we'd be celebrating our 3rd title (of course we'll never know).

I'd love to have him back but not for 3 years and $120 million or something ridiculous along those lines. Hopefully he lands in the NL although with LA I will be forced to hate him with a passion.
And here I thought I was exaggerating a bit to make a point but I was essentially dead on (but $10 million LOW).

The time off renewed his love for the game my ass.

While we paid Justin $91 million for one year of production somebody is likely going to pay him $130 million for the same thing (be it injury or hitting a wall age-wise).

That's not exactly what happened. Verlander had a deal in place with the Astros within two weeks of free agency. I don't recall anyone being stunned he returned

Union does not, and never has, cared about the younger guys. This drives the prices up for the older guys and that they like.

He should go get as much money as he possibly can.

People need to stop falling for this "it's a union" BS they try to sell

The union didn't prevent him from signing very quickly in 2021

He could be Andy Petite in the playoffs. The Astros aren't spending $43mm a year for 3 years on a 40 year old pitcher.

Its really simple, 99.8% of the people that are mad about this don't understand the money. We are not in their world. We can only grasp what makes sense to us. That is, your married to a supermodel who is worth approx $20 m, and you are approx worth $150 m.

If the Astros offered him $35m a year and the Dodgers $43m a year over 3 years, does that $24m make that huge of a difference? To most it makes no sense because we believe our life would be set already with the first $150 and an additional $100 on top.

No matter what you think of him, that is what made Brady's deal always so crazy. He was never if rarely the highest paid QB but has a room fill of rings one could only dream of.

If I...

  • Was 40+ years old and in the final stretch of my career
  • Had made close to $300 million in my career (and had a wife worth tens of millions on her own)
  • Was on a team with guys that I really enjoyed playing with and winning rings
  • Played for an organization noted as best in class for preparing its pitchers for battle
  • Was one of the top 25 pitchers of all time with a limited opportunity to tack on more accolades and jump into the top 10-15

...and the Astros were willing to pay me 2/$70mm (?) to play for them, I'd sign up for that and not think twice about it.

But, I also understand that the psycho competitive nature that drives JV's performance leaks into contract expectations. He thinks he's the best and expects the market to pay him as such. It's a badge of honor for him to get a better deal than Scherzer and feeds the ego that keeps him at the top of his game.

And that's totally cool. IMO he'd be doing his HOF career a disservice by running out the clock in Arlington or Anaheim simply because they were willing to give him 3/$130. But if he can get that from a contender like the Dodgers, see ya. The Astros will be just fine.

JV will be remembered for his incredible contribution to our recent success and I have nothing but fond memories of him here.

On the flip side, I was mad a Cole, he was a bit ch when he left. Houston was very good to him. He was a great pitcher when he came here, but our staff made him incredible. I don't fault him for taking the money NY was willing to pay him, but he was a real coward the way he went about it.

No one will remember long hair gun slinging Cole, they will only remember the neutered short hair Cole of Yankee mediocrity when they go two decades without making the WS.

I feel ya. It's easy to forget Crane essentially gave him 66 million for doing absolutely nothing. I get it's a business but 35 million is nothing to balk at either. Just disappointing. He's made over 300 million...... in grand scheme of things does 43 vs 35 make that big of a difference? Especially with California taxes...... I dunno
Im looking for Ray Finkle.... and a clean pair of shorts. Im just a very big Finkle fan. This is my Graceland, sir.

I love JV and hope what I'm about to say isn't true, but he is due for a huge drop off in performance.

I would expect him to have a rough 2023…there's just no way to sustain that kind of success that we got out of him in 2022..epic comeback for the ages, but I think that's a wrap on his dominance.

Retire his number or some **** and let him walk.

I am kind of expecting it too. 1-year deals with high vesting options are all I would want to do. But even then, not at the expense of filling other needs.

For those who follow the sport much close than I, especially beyond the Astros themselves, who is actually going to pay that? Yankees or Dodgers? Just because they can? Is that a realistic ask, or is it just posturing? One last swing for the fences (pun intended) for a final big contract?

Is it realistic? Sort of. It's what Scherzer got and I expect deGromm to be in the same ballpark, maybe higher.

I don't think he gets it. I think he'll end up "settling" for something like 2/80 with a vesting option for 1 more year @ 40 M.

I think the Dodgers, Rangers, & Yankees would all consider something like that,

JV had nothing left to prove. He has Cy Youngs. He is a 2x World Series champion.

Everything else now is just gravy. Sports stars have limited earning windows. Get as much as you can, JV.

As far as the Astros go, they don't need to and shouldn't pay it.

While few and far between, there are occasional "team friendly" deals that happen. One of the best 3B in baseball, Jose Ramirez signed a 7 year $141 million deal a couple months ago to stay with Cleveland. And he's in his prime at 30 years old. Not that I expect JV to ever do the same.

I'd love for the yankees to sign him. Between that salary, Cole, stanton, judge, and donaldson they will be in salary hell.

I certainly don't hold any ill will towards JV if he wants to maximize his last payday. That said, if I had $300M in the bank I'd be more interested in legacy. Hard to argue that the best opportunity to further the legend of JV is with the Astros.
