is there an estimate for how much revenue / income the Astros have made from world series merchandise?

that may cover Abreu's $20 MM right there

That's what I've been asking for a couple of days now or openly speculating that our balance sheet could be in a very good place but not sure who would have the numbers and what numbers Crane would want released into the public for obvious tax reasons.

Common sense says we've been operating in the black for quite a while and these last few years have likely been especially good. At least that's what I'm going with until proven otherwise.

I didn't listen to presser, but in the article discussing this on the chron ($link but reader view ftw!) he says he doesn't want the job and would not accept it because he "cares about the guys."

Quote:

"I love this team. I'm a Houston Astro. I've been here since 1991. I think Jim Crane is the best owner in baseball, that's part of the reason why I do this," Bagwell said. "(Crane) is a guy who played in college, that understands the game of baseball, hates to lose and will spend some money. You can't ask for any more than that. He's got a passion for it. To be a part of it is nice whatever part that is. But I care. And I care about the guys."
That sounds to me like someone that recognizes they are too emotionally invested and too passionate to do the job well. A good GM needs to be a measured, calculating and dispassionate decision maker. That's something many folks are just not able to do well (excepting that stone cold killa Farmer of course ).

The last 6 years surely have brought in a significant revenue increase from ticket sales and merchandise sales. The NY and LA teams beat everyone in radio and TV income. We are a 2 time WS champ, 5 of 6 Division champ and 4 time pennant winner. Convince the sponsors it's worth more.

I'd imagine Crane is more of a big picture guy than to look at just the bottom line for a single season. The value of the franchise would be through the roof if another 3-4 years of dominating is on tap. Crane has made more money than he'll ever spend. This is about his legacy and, as previously mentioned, *****slapping the *******s who scapegoated him and his team.

Window is open. Do and spend what you have to so you can take advantage of it and win now.

It would be a terrible signing

You don't bring in someone that completely disrespected other players in the locker room

Why in the hell should the Astros throw this playe a life raft for his career?. he is not good. That's why he was let go.
If the core players who were on that team are OK with him that's good enough for me and you know they have solicited their feedback already.

I'd bet they said "F that guy"

Bellinger is obviously a fit from a versatility standpoint. I'm just curious what a rumored deal for him would be?

Can't go crazy though, 5 years ago I wanted Stanton when the marlins were looking to unload him, thankfully that didn't happen

Just keep the talent acquisition and development team rolling and the window stays open for a long long time. Pay the talent guys whatever it takes to keep finding studs.

Who would have thought in 2017 we would let Springer, Kuechel, Correa, Morton, McHugh, Giles, Harris all walk and be even stronger with their replacements. As long as we just keep developing talent that we control for half a decade, there are always FA and trade deadline deals available to give us a real shot. We all know the best team doesn't always win it all, but if you make the show anything can happen. Keep the deals short and sweet and you don't get hamstrung.

Short term deal for a Gallo or Bellinger to find their groove again batting low in the order is a decent gamble. Both are good defensively. Personally would not be thrilled about Bellinger joining the team, seems like a big fat d0uche.

I'm with you 100%.

I was watching a thing about the USMNT '98 collapse (spoiler alert: Team captain John Harkes was boning best friend and teammate Eric Wynalda's wife). The coach booted Harkes even after Wynalda told him not to and the team turned against the coach for doing so.

The summary: The coach underestimated how badly high-level athletes want to win. A guy would truly rather play with another guy who is boning his wife than he would a lesser teammate that is not boning his wife. And so would his teammates.

All that to say that if he mashed 40 dingers and played GG CF, no one would give a single eff that he made some dumbass comments in the past.

Does Yuli have the chops to partially fill Oz' shoes helping to find Latino talent? Bench role for another year or so, retire an Astro and then work in the FO? The Latino pipeline has been a major key to our success and we cannot let that dry up.

Would be kinda funny seeing Gallo rake against the Rangers for 20 games in an Astros uniform. Nah, he'd just strike out a lot

Regardless of how much it makes sense from a money and players on the roster already standpoint, JV pitching elsewhere is just going to hurt me.

I would love to see:

1. Gallo be "valuable enough" for us by mashing dingers & playing solid defense.
2. Most of the thread moan about his low batting average and strikeouts and lack of sac flies
3. Farmer have a conniption fit trying in vain to explain how he's actually pretty good

I'm not going to get into how good or not good these guys are (not right now, anyway) but if I had to pick between them...I will take Big Donkey all day long.

Yep, reminds me of the documentary I watched about the Indians from a while back. The 3rd baseman and his wife had a rocky marriage and she cheated on him with the closer. Kid had no idea. 3rd baseman didn't even give a crap because the kid had gas and he was the best option to help them win.

Did you know Raley had a better ERA+ than Pressly? Elite arm we let walk away for nothing. Probably the reason Crane fired Click.

I always thought Kate Upton wanted him in LA. I'd hate to see him go but he's gonna be 40 when the season starts. Although, Abreu is 35.

Kind of reminds me if the moves the Rockets made after their second championship. Please don't kill the team chemistry.
