I do hope we re-sign uncle Mike if the price is right. His power may be close to gone, but I love his pure hitting along with Abreu in the same lineup.

Those two guys back to back, or sandwiched around Yordan-Bregman would be insane.
Agreed. Let's get it done.

I would love to have Yuli back. I expect the Astros have seen him taking reps at other positions to feel comfortable with him as a utility role.
I asked this a few ages ago, what does Yuli bring to the UTL position that someone like Diaz doesn't?
For starters, a desire to be at the plate in the playoffs.
Any real responses?

Diaz spends more time on the IL icing his jello hamstrings.

Yuli has been pretty durable.

Now batting, a player who finished top 17 in MVP voting…

Astros more than half the time they come to the plate.

Idk why but I find that hilarious.

30% of the top 17 MVP vote getters are in our batting order.

I don't think that's going to be the opening day 7-8-9.
I don't think so either. But Chas at 7 is nasty already.

Best 7-hole stats from 2022 - wRC+ (who mostly played there)
TOR - 119 (Matt Chapman)
MIL - 116 (Luis Uriaz)
CHAZZYFIZ - 114 (124 when in the 7-hole)
NYM - 109 (Mark Canha)
BOS - 108
STL - 107
OAK - 105
BAL - 104
SFG - 103
MIN - 101
LAD - 98
...
League Avg - 90
...
CLE - 75
SEA - 74
LAA - 53 (Kurt Suzuki)

That said, Chas is likely going to be the 8 hole when we add a lefty LF.

gonna be in the market for a first baseman the same time we're trying to re-sign tuck. Ill let future GM worry about that though, whoever he may be.

Who would play SS if Pena was out? Or are we saying have two infield utility guys?

Dubon. Yuli to me would be fill-in at 3B, 1B and DH.

I think Rome nailed the best potential lineup.

I know Ben is not the most popular source, but he is undeniably well plugged in. He's close with LMJ and Bregman and has been pretty spot on with other moves.

Agreed, but I was more referencing that I don't think Chas and Meyers will be in the lineup at the same time, even if we don't re-sign Uncle Mike or another LFer.

LETHAL! Real interested to see what the offense can do without the shift next year, especially Tucker, Alvarez, and hopefully Brantley.

Sign me up for this. I'll take a few older veterans to fill out this roster. It's time to cement a dynasty, and kudos to Crane and Co if they can do it without completely mortgaging the future.
I love Texas Aggie sports, but I love Texas A&M more.

great news on the Abreu signing

would have preferred a 2-year deal, but first base is set now for the next 3 seasons

really like that Abreu is a 155 games per year player.

he'll have a ton of RBI opportunities in which doubles and singles can get the job done

I think Crane (rightfully) is looking at this next 3 year window as our chance at entrenching ourselves as one of THE dynasties people talk about for decades.

In the next three years, if we can get to :
the ALCS all 3 years
the WS in 2 years
and win at least one of them....

It doesn't really get better than that in baseball.

Why is he unpopular? I like most of his stuff.

The problem with Brantley IMO is you have to wait and see on his health. By the time it comes time to sign him, the rest of the good options will be gone.

I also don't love how old this team is getting if we keep bringing guys back. Most of the rotation is young, but after that is slightly worrisome. I don't want the injury bug to hit us at the wrong time. Hopefully, we give these guys tons of rest. I'd like to develop some of the youth outside of Pena too.

Gurriel - 39
Maldonado - 36
Brantley - 36
Abreu - 36
Pressly - 34
Neris - 34
Altuve - 33

Has Crane given any indication he would entertain getting into the luxury tax band for a year or 2?

None at all

Which why all the hamd wringing about how much he's spending or wants to spend seems a bit premature.

That was my understanding. Now, its not my money, but the Astros going into that territory would make much more sense than a team that has absolutely no core or history of sustained success. My fanboy side was hoping that returning almost our entire team would prompt Crane to be more aggressive.

Doubt Dusty would do this but I'd go:

1. Altuve
2. Yordan
3. Bregman
4. Abreu
5. Ted
6. Peña

Maximum ABs for our two best hitters

Yeah, that's kind of the point. You aren't going to have MVP hitters 1-9, so don't worry so much about whoever we put in those spots. Chas is definitely above average, though.

What's the difference in ABs between the 2 and 3 spots?

Is it that big to sacrifice not having Pena on in front of Yordan and this missing RBIs or getting good pitches for Yordan because Jose and/or Pena are on?

That's an interesting exercise to crunch numbers on.
MaxPower
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Given the way the season ended, I can't see Peña coming out of the 2 hole. There's two sides of the coin as to why. On the one hand, he's clearly not the second best hitter (or top 5 for that matter). However, he is more productive there than elsewhere. So the question is do you want the best hitter there if it makes Peña less effective in the 7 hole or do you want the most productive Peña you can get even if it pushes a better hitter down in the order?
