I would love to have Yuli back. I expect the Astros have seen him taking reps at other positions to feel comfortable with him as a utility role.
I asked this a few ages ago, what does Yuli bring to the UTL position that someone like Diaz doesn't?
For starters, a desire to be at the plate in the playoffs.
Any real responses?

Damn, that a big one. If I'm Yuli, I jump all over that utility man offer.

If we can sign Brantley, i can him platooning with Yordon at DH/LF which alleviates some need for a traditional utility OF. Yuli can also DH when those guys need rest and can play 1B when Abreu needs rest. If the price is right, i don't think its a bad idea.

Being two years removed from being a batting champion/huge potential upside. I have no idea what his defense would look like elsewhere though.

I guess technically this could be correct, but no way we don't add another OFer.

Dusty is going to have a hard time taking the former MVP and big salary vet out of the top few spots.

Not to be a debbie downer, but this feels like another overpay by Crane. Do you think anyone else is willing to offer a fully guaranteed 3rd year to a 38-year-old?

Regardless, this is great news. I just worry we're committing money in 2025 when it comes time to keep Altuve and Bregman.

I think we'd only consider it if 1) we think we can fix whatever was ailing him at the plate during the 22 regular season and 2) we're confident he can play a solid 3B and LF.

Dubon and/or Hensley can cover up the middle. It could potentially work out nicely. Worst case scenario, we cut him loose in July and acquire a more versatile utility guy for the stretch run.

Not too shabby.....

1. Jose Altuve - 2B
2. Jeremy Pena - SS
3. Yordan Alvarez - LF/DH
4. Jose Abreu - 1B
5. Kyle Tucker - RF
6. Alex Bregman - 3B
7. ??????????? - LF/DH
8. Chas McCormick - CF
9. Martin Maldonado - C

Breggy in the 6 hole? Switch with Pena.

Regardless, it's long. Very long.

That's what she said!

For real though, it's getting close to 2019 offense with 2022 pitching.

This team is going to be a freaking buzz saw.

You know Seattle is looking at this move and have to be saying "really?"

I think keeping Altuve around will be easy. Crane most likely knows Bregman is going to command a large, long term contract when that time comes and knows now he wont do it. He wants to strike while the iron is hot.

My main hope is the team will be able to lock up Tucker....

Yuli was a 3B for most of his career, and I think I read somewhere that sometimes he warms up at SS and can play that position competently.

Yep. He's done 3B at a high level before. Only question is if he can still do it today. I won't be surprised either way.

If he does comeback in a UTIL role, I doubt we see him playing up the middle very often. But who knows.

If we continue on the path we're on I'd say Crane will have some extra money to throw around by that 3rd year. Our balance sheet has to look pretty damn nice with sellouts/playoffs/merchandise/concessions along with the normal revenue streams.

I would much rather spend 3/60 on Abreu than 2/80 on Verlander given our team's makeup.

It might be a slight overpay, but based on what's available and our current team, it's well worth it.

I do hope we re-sign uncle Mike if the price is right. His power may be close to gone, but I love his pure hitting along with Abreu in the same lineup.

Those two guys back to back, or sandwiched around Yordan-Bregman would be insane.

IMO Yuli would have the corners and Dubon/Hensley up the middle. In an emergency, Bregman would probably slide to SS and Yuli to 3B in lieu of Yuli to SS.
