Wait a minute, how many new ball parks have they had? Is the the one after the Ballpark at Arlington, or is this yet another new one after the Home Depot one?

Why did they dump the Ballpark? I liked that place.

The Ballpark was a furnace in the summer. Fans didn't want to attend games. Now they just suck and are buried 20 games back in the summer - fans still don't want to attend games.
What do you boys want for breakfast BBQ ?.....OK Chili.

Which is great for Astros fans in DFW. Great seats are cheap as hell.

They are slow up there. They didnt learn the lesson the first time. The lesson being "an outdoor baseball stadium in the summer in Arlington is idiotic."

Anyone on this list that doesn't get a contract?
I would guess James would be the only potential candidate. He'll be 30 next year.

Wasn't his contract $800k last year, give or take? Not a big amount and he might finally get over the hump.

Speaking of humps, hopefully Whitley continues his upward trend.
Yeah, those last 4 don't take up a lot of cap room. I would think it would come down to if we needed 40 man roster space and given we only added one guy prior to rule 5 we may not be worried about it.

I did not know he had an arm like that. How perfect would it be if he was ready?

He's already 24 so more concerning he isn't already "ready".

He only has 187 games in the minors (132 in AAa) and was out of baseball for over 2 years. Pena just had his rookie year at 25. We've seen our system get international players a little older than most and have success (see Framber).

He's got a cannon. He can play SS, 2B, and CF. And he's got power for a small frame. I still think the future can be very bright,

I'd rather give guys like Leon, Lee and Diaz a chance before signing free agents. Just go for a mid season pick up if they are not working out. We have enough pitching and other hitting to allow them time to figure it out like Peña this year.

I'd like to see Leon get a shot.

Put Chas in LF, Leon CF, Tuck RF, Yordan DH.

Sign a 1B.

Leon should get a chance this year. If not this, next. He's a 5 tool guy who was out for a few years. He's adjusting to the higher level of competition. I see him coming along like Yuli.

Leon has some interesting stats at AAA

17 HR, 63 RBI, 38 SB, 145 SO, 71 walks
.228 AVG, 365 OBP, .431 SLG, .796 OPS

If he can cut down on K's and make more contact he could be a real player

This.
What reason would you sign Yuli over someone like Diaz to be your bench guy?

Diaz plays more positions, plays them at a higher level, was better offensively, is younger, and won't cost a lot.

Not saying your wrong

But Yuli brings more to the locker room as a leader, tone setter, Cuban (Cuban royalty at that) who's been around the block.

I think Yuli's intangibles are severely underrated and often overlooked.

Did MLB network or anyone here dive in to Yuli's playoff resurgence? It was such a pleasant surprise and a huge reason we went 11-2 in the playoffs (that is still a crazy underrated number!). Was it mechanics, patience at the plate, feeling healthy? What was missing during the regular season causing that struggle that he found again in October?

My eyes tell me it was a lot of luck and great BABIP

No strikeouts combined with no double plays hit into was a huge part of his success

He still doesnt hit the ball with authority, but if you can avoid dobule plays and strikeouts, he is a contact King
I think you would be correct,

Playoffs #s (Regular Season #s)
BA - .311 (.242)
xBA - .255 (.240)
EV - 86.8 (88.2)
LA - 13 (14.6)
HardHit% - 23% (35.6%)
Barrel% - 2% (1.9%)

When he made contact, it wasn't all that different. The biggest thing he did well in the playoffs was not strike out. His 12.5% rate in the regular season is damn damn good, but he went to another level 12 games. Only 2% K%.

That makes a lot of sense. I'd take that for 81 games at 1B and DH and another 81 coming in to PH next season.

But there is no way he'd stay that "lucky" and no way to realistically keep his Ks that low. More than likely you'll get the same or worse as the 2022 regular season.

An interesting fact about Chas that I think a lot of people may not realize is that he has a higher career OPS than Josh Reddick.

If Yuli wasn't an Astros legend, there's no way we would pursue him on the FA market for anything other than a $2 million let's see if he's got anything in the tank spring training shot type of deal.

I do believe he's owed a contract offer and a shot to make the team, but I think the salary should be commensurate with a below league average OPS first baseman with waning defensive range.

If there's someone out there that wants to pay him 8 million bucks next year for his leadership and to hope he can rekindle his stroke then we should congratulate him and make a hell of a highlight video for when he comes back to play @ MMP
Harry Dunne

Spotrac has his market value at one year $11.6 million. Why the eff would anyone pay him that much?

They have Abreu and Goldschmidt as comps…and with that keen projection, Spotrac market value just got bumped down to the spot right above the poster cone's opinion on my list of valued sources.

He's one year removed from a batting title and has a top tier glove at first base, not to mention as much post season experience as anyone in the league.

He's not a flyer. He's valuable for a lot of organizations; I wouldn't be surprised if he landed 5-7 somewhere but 8 might be too much as you suggested..

But what do I know about market value there as far as number, I guess my point is there is value there. He's worth more than a flyer.
Harry Dunne
How long do you want to ignore this user?
In the post-steroid era guys fall off a cliff fast. Usually quite a bit younger than Yuli's age, whatever that really is.

His fielding fell off last season. He came in tied for 13th in the fielding Bible award. He is no longer an elite fielder and that will matter more this season.

He's also got a below league average OPS over the last three aggregate seasons. That includes the batting title season. I love Yuli but you gotta be real about what he is.

The idea of looking at comps and determining a market is fine. Just gotta review the comps to see if they pass the smell test.

Harry Dunne

Yeah the idea is great, but that's like using a couple of houses in West U for my comps when I live in Katy!

The problem is that there aren't a lot of players similar to Yuli.

Kind of a random rabbit hole on finding comps. Here is one for Tucker.

Obviously, different positions, but this one is pretty strong.

Kyle Tucker vs Manny Machado.
BA: .268 / .282
OBP: .335 / .341
SLG: .502 / .493
OPS: .837 / .833

wOBA: .354 / .353
wRC+: 129 / 124
K%: 17.1% / 17.0%
BB%: 9.0% / 8.2%

Pull%: 40.4% / 40.4%
Cent%: 37.9% / 35.0%
Oppo%: 21.7& / 24.6%

Soft%: 12.0% / 18.1%
Med%: 50.4% / 45.4%
Hard%: 37.6% / 36.5%

Reminder - Machado signed a 10/300 deal at age 26. Tucker gets to FA at 29.

A couple of others with similar #s - Nelson Cruz, Rafael Devers, & Austin Riley.

I know he's had some issues in the past with control but I think Abreu is about to blow up and be a dominant force in this league very very soon. Strom was so high on him that they didn't give up on him and he's going to continue to improve into a dominate closer/main setup guy soon.
