Yep

And as mentioned earlier JV cares about the union aspect and setting the market for the next guys means you want that big number. The market doesn't take into account taxes.

Every single time a FA hits the market in any sport fans always talk about the tax issue and we see every time it doesn't mean shlt to these guys. Not sure why some haven't realized this.

They do file taxes there. As a consultant I had to file taxes at all the companies I worked at in the year. My record was 11 states. I can't imagine the complexity of their tax returns and the number of states involved.
yeah, my friend had his local tax guy tell him to find someone else after doing his taxes his first season in the league. Complete PITA for the local small town tax man.

For me, its a "simple" math problem.

If the difference between JV and Brown over 25 starts is greater than the difference between Yuli and Abreu plus the difference between Dubon/Jake vs Conforto over 130 games then I sign JV. If not, I sign Abreu and Conforto.

By my estimate, JV+Yuli is going to cost as much or maybe even more than Abreu+Conforto. Both would basically exhaust our luxury tax space.

Here are the streamers & depth chart projections for 2023 (WAR):
Verlander - 4.2 to 4.2
Brown - 1.1 to 1.1 (but only projecting 100 IP and 10 starts. If I look at WAR/IP and project 150 IP it moves to 1.7)
Difference: 2.5

Abreu - 2.4 to 2.6 (126 wRC+)
Gurriel - 0.5 to 0.6 (100 wRC+)
Difference: 1.9 to 2.0

Conforto - 1.6 to 1.9 (117 wRC+)
Dubon - 1.1 to 1.1 (97 wRC+)
Difference: 0.5 to 0.8

2.5 vs 2.4 to 2.8

Even though I feel like these projections are not fully passing the smell test, I still think the math works out that JV is not the value play. We can help our team more by spending that money elsewhere.

To everyone that ordered a plaque. I will be emailing you shortly as well, but we had an issue with the shipment. They sent me the wrong ones and are sending me the corrected plaques. This is going to delay when they are going out. If you have any questions let me know.

If you only got tumblers, we will be sending those out this week.

Everyone has egos. I'd personally think if I was a shoe in for the hall and that was my wife, I'd be completely out of needing any sort of extra ego boost for life.

Good post.

I will add that it's riskier to count on continuing production from guys playing past the age where players normally retire.

A $43MM salary in California is equivalent to a $33.5MM salary in Texas. I suspect that Crane will ante up the money to match any potential Cali offer, the issue will be the 3rd year that JV wants. I doubt the Astros will pull the trigger on a 3 year deal but perhaps they can get creative similar to a Bonilla/ Mets type deal if they absolutely covet 2 more years.
I think these players are required to file state taxes in every state in which they participate in games. But the Astros do get the relief for all homes games, games in Arlington, and games played in Florida (Rays/Marlins)
And remarkably, Seattle, as Washington has no state income tax.

No way union loyalty over shadows what's best for family. They may use that excuse but that isn't real when it comes to life decisions like this

He was pretty good against lefties but crushed by righties. From looking at his advanced stats, looks like righties ate up his 4 seamer and sinker but his slider and change were effective. He only threw 41% fastballs against righties so it's hard to envision how much lower that pitch mix can change.

I hope we can keep the pitching coaches on board. I wouldn't mind some fresh blood in the hitting coach ranks.

That's called desperation. GM's whose ass we're kicking hoping to speak dysfunction into existence.

And we're going to keep kicking their asses again next year too.

I do wonder if Click might have been egging on some of that dysfunction talk knowing the writing was on the wall.

Yeah...Looked real dysfunctional in the dugout after that last out.

Besides if it's that dysfunctional you don't wanna be here then pack your bags.

I'm guessing they are plenty of quality staffers who want to coach these players under Dusty.

You're either with us or against us.

Isn't that why Crane fired him?

The Pirates are my #1 team due to family heritage. Astros have always been my #2 due to being a Texan.

The Pirates are one of the most functional organizations in all of sports. The owner's ability to produce **** teams and be a glorified minor league feeder system all while he rakes in profits and fans keep showing up to that beautiful stadium and giving him money even with all the losses is truly something to behold.

I would give up 2 or 3 toes for them to be as 'dysfunctional' as the Astros have been the last 6 years.
