Who cares? It's his money to spend.

What I'm taking away here is the Crane wanted to spend and Click didn't. Click's biggest flaw was his ability to land the big fish.

These deals that he didn't do along with Crane handling the JV and Yordan extensions tells me he's great at operating within a small budget (what they do in TB) but when it comes to playing with the big boys he doesn't have it.

While Chas has turned out to be nice Marte would have been so so awesome in this lineup and answered every question we have surrounding the CF position. It was a mess this year and it didn't have to be.

Or Dusty should have played the guy who was playing well and we would have had above avg CF play all year long.

Crane sounds like a 790 caller wanting to just buy the big name.

It worked out but not getting a proven centerfielder was a mistake and is still an issue. I'm with Crane.

Why is a top 10 CFer not good enough?

Just FYI, Marte was a below avg right fielder this past season. His days at CF are probably over.

It is. We should get one.

If we were to make a move to CF it would have to be somebody like Bryan Reynolds, or Mullins to make it worth it.

Marte was not the move.

#10 on O

How many on the O list are near the top of D?

This is why wRC+ is better than other metrics to compare hitters. Chas's stat like looks bad to the naked eye, or the average fans eyes.

He's really good.

Cap guys, what would this run:

- Keep JV
- Sign Abreu
- Sign Benitendi

We now have over 700 player appearances of data. 111 career wRC+. He showed major improvement by lowering his K% & raising his BB%. His barrel% is similar to Freddie Freeman, Kyle Tucker, Corey Seager, & Anthony Rizzo. I'd say that's good company.

No one is saying he's Trout of even Springer offensively, but he's above average, under control for years, and it's at a position that only has a handful of great players and tons of avg to below avg.

JV 35-40 M (2-3 years)
Abreu 18-24 M (2-3 years)
Beni 14-18 M (4-5 years)

Marte worked out for year 1, but how long does he keep playing like a 20 M CFer? Age 34, 35, & 36 remain.

If we weren't willing to pay George, we shouldn't pay another teams aging CFer. It sends a **** message to the team.

Hendricks is legit but why pay so much for duplication. We have Pressly and some elite arms.

I'm siding with Click on both.
Don't disagree from a value perspective but what is the point of undermining the owner in those scenarios? And not just doing so once but twice?

I think Hendricks would have worked out fine. You likely wouldn't have signed neris or extended Montero. At that point the money is close to a wash and Hendricks is better than both and I'd bank on him being better going forward. Maybe if he had made that move then he could fade the Marte situation. Pick and choose your battles.

I really wonder what the point of this story is. Click made a team that won its Division handily, went 11-2 ij the playoffs and won the WS. You don't get bonus points for spending more money and as the Dodgers show super teams don't always work out.

The point is to illustrate the gulf between owner and GM. The specific moves add color but at the end of the day the owner wanted certain players (right or wrong) and the deals were feasible to execute but the GM undermined the owner. Click no doubt was doing what he thought was in the best interest of the team on the field but it ain't his money to spend (or in this case not spend).

True and he's gone. I want an owner that will spend and a GM that will make good decisions. We had both with Jeff and I think with James too. Let's hope the next guy has balls and isn't a yes man. We get into that situation and we become the Cowboys.

The point of the story is that Crane is justifying his moves. I'm sure Schwab's source is Crane or someone close to him. (The son?)

If we can keep Benitendi to 3-4 years, let's do it.

I'm ready to roll with Chas for an entire year. His improvement in SO% and K% this year convinces me he can get better this year too. I think he'll hit 25 HR next year if he plays everyday.

Doubt this will be Correa's best offer, but I wonder what a 7 year AAV would be? Probably 35+ You'd be getting age 28-34. Pretty much all prime with no anchor at the end.

If it worked out, then it wasn't a mistake.

You thinking it was a mistake was the mistake.

With no one in the market that screams fit for CF, seems go with Chaz and eye an upgrade before the trade deadline.

Rent a player before Drew Gilbert gets here in 2 years.

Correa should prefer a contender, but 7 years may end up his best offer

the Cubs' lineup needs major improvement

The Cubs were 14 under .500 and 19 back of the Cards. They are about to lose their Catcher and are in the bottom third in pitching. Adding Correa makes as much sense as the Rangers adding a third SS.

If he can't play SS then he'll still be a very good 3B. The bat shouldn't fall off much. Anchor would be what Miggy is or what Pujols was before he magically got good again. Damn near unplayable.

I miss Correa. I'm probably in the minority but I'd take Carlos at third over Bregman. Bregman is solid there but I think Correa's cannon could make him a GGer. Caminiti kind of player.
