There are 2 remaining assistant GMs. They were both Click guys. I don't think it's a lock they continue their jobs. After that, you go down to the director level. I am sure they know what they're doing, but are they senior enough to trust with this decision-making at a high level? I have no idea. I am not in baseball OPS. I don't know the answer to all my questions. I don't think anyone on here does either. I do know there are plenty of opportunities to make mistakes or miss opportunities. None of them is likely season-altering, but I like to have every edge possible.AggiEE said:Farmer1906 said:Who are they adding to the 40 man to protect?Buck Compton said:Most of this **** is already taken care of. Who is handling the following now?
Any early FA signings? FA opened yesterday, TARGET LIST ALREADY IDENTIFIED
40-man roster decisions to protect guys from rule 5 draft (Nov 15 deadline) DONE
Non tender decisions. (Nov 18 deadline) DONE
Winter meetings aka the biggest event for signings and trades of the offseason. (Dec 5-8) CRANE AND SOME OTHERS WILL ATTEND. ONLY LOOKING AT MAYBE ONE POTENTIAL TRADE AND 1-2 FA SIGNINGS
Rule 5 Draft (Dec 7) OVERHYPED. WE AREN'T LIKELY TO DRAFT ANYONE. ONLY 1-2 PEOPLE WE NEED TO PROTECT.
There is a lot of really important **** happening and we got no one manning the ship.
Who are they targeting in FA? Who is determining the value of each guy?
Who did are they going to non tender?
Who is deciding who we trade in this one potential trade? BTW who let you know they're only looking at one?
Who are the 1-2 people they want to protect?
I mean, surely Click isn't solely the guy making all those decisions, he's just signing off on them
So I think those plans are already in work by other office staff and Crane will sign off for them instead

Assistant GMs don't just jump and leave cause their boss was fired. They may leave eventually, but maybe not. They aren't millionaires or rolling in a ton of extra cash. Plus, stepping up to support is a huge career opportunity.Farmer1906 said:There are 2 remaining assistant GMs. They were both Click guys. I don't think it's a lock they continue their jobs. Seems like a lot of fear in your analysis, which is no way to make decisions in an organization. If Crane doesn't think Click is the right guy, and has made that decision, there's literally no reason to keep him around even a second longer. No matter the deadlines. But especially if he didn't trust Clock to make the right decisions around those deadlines.

Click's departure is the rare opportunity for all of the Board GM's to finally get an interview and tell Jim how they'd run the team.

Was it Ausmus or Garner's that lived in Kingwood and the wife campaigned hard against building the stadium? Think because of Houston annexing Kingwood.
Had to be Garner's. A buddy of mine actually sold Ausmus his first house in Sugarland when he moved here (he put "Houston Astrodome" under workplace on the prospect form). He always moved back to California in the offseason, and my buddy said Liz Ausmus was pretty cool, but more into the California vibe. I don't see why they would care about the annexing of Kingwood.Thinice said:

I'm not worried about Crane's oversight of the Astros until he gives me a reason to be. So far, he's given me none. I'd be very surprised if he let Click walk without having a short and long term plan.Buck Compton said:
Crane has a plan. If that succeeds is yet to be seen, but he has answers to every question we've asked and likely ones we haven't asked.
I don't think we're going to be any more or less aggressive than normal if there's no acting GM. We've abided by a certain set of organizational principles for a while now and they've worked very well. I don't see Crane as some sort of wildcatter who's eager to go in and shake up a fine tuned machine. Status quo is just fine.tjack16 said:
Might be interesting to see if crane is aggressive in the FA market now that he can kind of do whatever he wants
The Houston Astros also fired assistant general manager Scott Powers, sources told ESPN. Powers was a former R&D executive with the Dodgers who was brought in as an AGM by James Click in January. Now Click and Powers are gone from the World Series champions on the same day.

Agreed its a bad way to look at it, but in the end Dusty was proven correct. Pena in the 2 spot was a great decision.
I think Click was a fine GM. Don't know that he's irreplaceable.

I have to say...the owner running off the analytical GM and siding with the non-analytical coach...after 7 years of success built by analytics is a bit concerning. Crane has shown some aptitude for this stuff...but I hope to hell he has a plan to keep the machine rolling.
Then again, everyone knows that Dusty is his darling. What GM wants to come work in the environment with the coach having more say?
