Nice, I missed that. We're going to end up with 8-10 while the next closest teams will likely be in the 5-7 range with a lower avg / median. It's good to be KING.

Go ahead and sign me up for this! Read that he played collegiate baseball with Biggio and drafted Cavan when he was with Toronto. The two seem to have kept in touch. I think he's the medium between analytics and scouting.

Probably just talking to him more about taking over Dusty at some point. Not that I'm okay with Assmunch being anywhere in that building but whatever.

Love the hire - love how the Braves have been put together the last 3 years or so.
And don't get me wrong - I love Bags - and appreciate some of his input for the team and that he's chosen to be an Astro lifer. But glad his guy wasn't hired and this kind of showed him Crane is still in charge.

Dana spoke to 3 people with the Astros before being hired. Crane, Baggy, and Reggie Jackson. Bags was still heavily involved with this decision.

Not that Ausmus would be my 1st, or even top 5 choice, but I think Crane has made it clear that he will be very active in the direction of this team, from the front office to the field.
We've won with Hinch ( a VERY analytical manager), and Baker (a very old school feel manager), and I don't see that changing based solely on the manager position.

Good to know - forgot about Reggie's input. Also apparently nicknames for Bagwell get censored around here!

Thats because unlike most of us, he still has a flat enough belly that he can button the bottom one.

Nothing a few months in the tine won't fix.

I'm a no button guy right now. If I buttoned, I could be endangering those around me.

great news on the Brown hire.

the consideration of Ausmus was way too much of the "getting the band back together" stuff

Buy that's why I only suggested something else must have been going on. Has Crane ever done anything stupid enough to ever suggest he'd really be considering Ausmus to be GM?

He's been under AA for years and years now. You've seen them lock up Riley, Olson, Acuna, Strider, Murphy, Harris, & Albies. What most of those guys have in common is that it was done early on. I am pretty sure Acuna, Albies, Harris, & Strider we're right after their rookie years. Olson & Murphy were done as soon as they were traded for. Riley waited until year 1 of Arb. By doing so he got 21.2 AAV vs Acuna 12.5, Harris 9 AAVs.

I think this bodes well for Pena getting an offer. We'll probably work on the big 3 in arb, but it'll be much pricier. No way we keep them all.

Pena scares me as a long term offer guy right now. K's too much and doesn't walk. I'd like to see another year from him. Tuck or Javier should be the priority.

That price tag goes up the longer you wait. And the you get to a point where they just want to wait for FA.

I'm willing to roll the dice on that. He's a little older and won't hit free agency until he's 29.

Quote:

Marteese Robinson (born April 17, 1966) is a former college baseball player who played professionally, but never reached the major leagues.
Robinson attended Seton Hall Prep and then Seton Hall University. He hit .394/.453/.596 with the club in 1985 and .529/.564/.857 with 16 home runs and 90 RBI, 89 runs and 58 stolen bases in 55 games for the college team in 1987. He was the top hitter in NCAA Division I baseball that season, putting forth "one of the finest individual seasons in college baseball history."[1] His .529 mark at the time was the second-highest in NCAA history, trailing Keith Hagman's .551 in 1980.[2] With Robin Ventura, he won the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Collegiate Baseball Player of the Year honor. He also earned a consensus All-American selection at first base and was named Big East Conference Player of the Year.[3] After the 1987 season, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League.[4]
He was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the sixth round of the 1987 Major League Baseball Draft, between infielders Dave Hollins and Greg Colbrunn, and began his professional career that year.[5] He played in their organization until 1990, though never reached above Double-A. In 388 career games, he hit .266 with 24 home runs and 39 stolen bases. He was the first Collegiate Baseball Player of the Year to not reach the majors and the last until Lloyd Peever, who earned the honor in 1992.
He was profiled extensively in the 2002 book The Hit Men and the Kid Who Batted Ninth: Biggio, Valentin, Vaughn & Robinson: Together Again in the Big Leagues by David Siroty.[6]
He later worked as a scout for the St. Louis Cardinals, Washington Nationals and Toronto Blue Jays.[7][8][9]

Sorry I should have been more clear. I want to know why the guy hitting .540 in a lineup of future major league stars didn't make it.
