Brantley loves to get hurt. 4 years with Astros he's averaged 95 games a year.
That number includes 2020,, if you extrapolate his 46 games over a 162 season, he's averaging 114 games per year for last 4 years

or throw out 2020 he's averaged 111 games per year

I'm fine with resigning him, but he gets hurt quite a bit. From 2016 to now, he's been injury prone. He's 35, so that is probably going to continue in the wrong direction.

Is that a joke or did you forget about 2020? For the first 3 years Brantley was very healthy for a guy in his 30s with a history of injury.

2019 - 91.35% + postseason
2020 - 76.67% + postseason
2021 - 74.69% + postseason
2022 - 39.51% + no postseason

He has a history of injuries and he is way on the wrong side of 30.

Will add he (uncle Mike) also doesn't seem to have much pop in the bat. Professional hitter for sure but not much power anymore. Note: that's just my observation watching games. I haven't looke up the stats

Put him on in front of those with power. A solid hitter helps the team put up crooked numbers

If he's moved to DH wouldn't that help his chances of staying healthy?

That was all true the first and second times we signed him.

I am not disagreeing on it being a potential issue, just the fact you use the avg which included 2020.

I'd personally let Brantley walk. We seemed to do just fine without him from July - World Series

Really hope Brantley is brought back. His bat will be very valuable with the no shift next year and everyone knows what he means to the locker room. They need to get that one done asap.

I feel like Brantley is a really good all sides of the field hitter. So I just don't think the shift ban will help him as much as others…..

For instance, just pulled numbers on baseball savant. In 2022, the defense was shifted against Brantley in 37.5% of his at bats, 44% in 2021.

Tucker was 90.9%. Yordan was 88.2%.

I haven't looked at Baseball Savant but that number for the shift vs. Yordan seems pretty nuts. I know he'll pull the ball a lot like most hitters but he's shown consistently that he'll go oppo without hesitation and when he's really on fire he drives a lot of baseballs middle/oppo. When he's going he'll shoot that line-drive base hit to LF without hesitation and when he does that pitchers will try to get too perfect and make mistakes that end up being destroyed to right-center.
The shift has more to do with the infield so those power drives to the LC gap or attacking the Crawford Boxes don't really factor into INF shift decisions.

Edit: I guess I am slow this morning.

I'm aware of that but if you look at his spray chart (can't figure out how to get it to embed) there's a fairly significant number of base hits on the ground to the left side against the shift. And there's a lot of those termed "line drives" that were he played more straight up would have been easy plays for the SS or 3B. Those vastly outnumber legit base hits to the left side that would be hits regardless of the shift.

We definitely had a major hold in the lineup at LF/DH, where Yordan was not playing. Diaz filled it alright for a while, but got ice cold. Mancini hit some HRs but fell off a cliff. Chas was okay there, but then it meant a hole in CF with Dubon. We need to address LF if we want to make strides with the offense.

I think there is a mistake in your thought process. There is more/close to the same # of hits on both sides yet one side is loaded with defenders. Look at all balls hit each side.

Nope- no mistake.

The point is that when Alvarez is "on" he's shooting those base hits to LF/LC consistently. Hitters are always going to pull more frequently, it's just natural (unless you're Ichiro or Tony Gwynn) but when hitters spoil those pitches by going oppo instead of trying to pull them and rolling over they end up getting more & better pitches to hit.

He has no value now. Get him to the point that he can be a reliever in the big leagues and see what you have. He's still only 24

Yeah I thought so. I assume if JV feels like he has a competition with Max then his starting asking price is $45M per year

Because he's never going to crack our rotation and even if he does, too much baggage, not enough upside. He's a royal or pirate.

Can you imagine paying a guy 45 million and being scared to start him in the World Series?
