I love playing the lineup game. This is how I'd do it:

Altuve
Peña
Yordan
Bregman
Tucker
Abreu
Brantley
McCormick
Maldonado

Peña thrived in the two hole and deserves to keep that spot.
In what f@#k1ng universe does Peña hit 2nd and Brantley 7th?!?!

Am I doing it right?

Brantley had a .370 OBP last year

walked once every 9 plate appearances

he's not hitting 7th

Can someone explain why we don't want Tuck hitting 2nd and Brantley hitting 6th followed by Pena?

Many of us do.

It's either him, Josh Hamilton or Profar on the open market.

Or give the job to Hensley. Which by the way I am not opposed to. They just have to be prepared to get someone in June if he bombs.

Ummm… what? Is this a former Ranger joke I'm not getting.

Drury would probably be too expensive, but he would be a great bat off the bench.

I had no problem that Dusty placed Peña hitting in front of Yordan for most of the season to ease his transition to major league pitching but to keep that spot he needs to evolve into a true two hole hitter. Nobody here is questioning his solid rookie season or his phenomenal postseason but he really needs to improve his BB/K ratio to keep hitting in the two hole especially since we have at least two hitters that fit the bill better (Breggy and Uncle Mike)..

I don't. I want a healthy MB hitting 2nd. I want my best hitter in the 2 hole. Bregman, Abreu, Yordan, Tucker. Somewhere in there is a 3-4-5-6. And someone has to hit 6th. It's not a knock. It's a stacked top 6. I'll wager Dusty alternates L/R and we see:

Jose
MB
Breggy
Yordan
Abreu
Tucker
Pena
Chas/Machete

No. My phone autocorrected. I thought I was typing Josh Harrison. It's definitely not a Rangers love in.

I think the stros lost only 7 games (including playoffs) with Pena in the 2 hole.

I dont see anyway you can change this.

Very confused by anyone batting Abreu 7th… he's a better hitter than Peña by almost every measure. He's better than Brantley, too.

Altuve
Tucker
Bregman
Alvarez
Abreu
Brantley
Peña
McCormick
Maldonado

Is probably your best lineup. That being said, it wouldn't surprise me to see Tucker and Brantley flipped for Dusty. Or to see Abreu or Peña bat second when it isn't the core lineup

I'd rather do some reverse psych and have MB at 9th than 7th. Move him to 9th and let him get on for Altuve do push him around.

Why would you get upset at this when more than half this thread was happy to let Correa walk "because he's gonna get hurt all the time?"

Because we're not paying Brantley $35mm per year for 10+ years.

Not even close to the same situation.

Since this is the batting order thread now, here are a few data points.

Jose Abreu has batted 3rd or 4th in 1,219 / 1,270 games or ~96% of the time.

---

Since Dusty here are a few of our guy's lineup spots (pinch-hitting in later positions included)
Brantley: 69% 2nd, 19% 3rd, 7% 4th (100% 2nd in 2022)
Bregman: 59% 3rd, 31% 4th, 7% 2nd
Alvarez: 59% 4th, 31% 3rd, 4% 5th
Tucker: 37% 5th, 29% 6th, 13% 7th, & 10% 4th (only 1 game in the 7 hole in 2022)

---

For the Pena 2 Hole enthusiasts

2 Hole - 24.7 K%, 3.2 BB%, .358 wOBA, .317 xwOBA, 87.0 EV, 5.2 LA (62% RHP)
8 Hole - 28.2% K%, 5.1 BB%. .347 wOBA, .423 xwOBA, 88.8 EV, 18.8 LA (81% RHP - his worse split)

If only Dusty had kept him in the 8-hole, Pena would have ended up an MVP candidate. Am I doing this right?

---

I think Dusty needs a standard lineup for lefty starts and righty starters. Arguing for Brantley in the 2 hole makes sense vs righties, but not vs lefties. The same might be true for Pena flipped.

2022 vs LHP

2022 vs RHP

A few thoughts
  • Not enough ABs to judge Jake or Hensley
  • Dubon should never start vs a RHP
  • We really need a LHH catching option
  • I don't expect the Breggy reverse splits to continue
  • Brantley hit lefties well last year, but it was much worse in '21 & '20. I would platoon a good amount.
  • Chas needs to be moved up vs LHP
  • Alvarez, Altuve, & Abreu hit both really well

Here is my stab at it. Let's get weird.

vs RHP
Altuve
Tucker
Alvarez
Bregman
Brantley
Abreu
Pena
Lefty Catcher
Chas

vs LHP
Altuve
Chas
Alvarez
Bregman
Abreu
Pena
Tucker
Hensley - .956 OPS vs LHP in AAA
Maldonado

"Correa will just get hurt...haha, money wasted" Ok on the Astros thread

"Brantley will just get hurt." How dare you, you jerk!

Eso si, Que es
How long do you want to ignore this user?
XWOBA for the past 2 years

Yordan .425
Tucker .375
Abreu .370
Brantley .365
Altuve 0.340
Bregman 0.340
Chas .320
Peña .300
Maldonado .260

I want to see good traffic in the bases for Yordan hitting in the 3 hole. I would just think of our top 6 as 1-2-3A and 1-2-3B

1-2-3A
Tucker
Altuve
Alverez

1-2-3B
Bregman
Brantley
Abreu

Peña
Chas
Maldonado

Just tell Tucker he can lead off if he signs a 6 year deal

I love that we can argue which of the following guys should bat 7th--the 2022 WS MVP, a 2022 AS with 30HRs, the 2020 MVP, or a 10 year+ vet with a .298 career BA.

Good problems to have.....

Of course, as mentioned before, the "perfect" lineup will only be on opening day, and then the rotating rest schedule for one of the starters will kick in.

Brantley had injury issues his last couple of seasons with Cleveland but other than last season he has has had only a couple of short stints on the IR the rest of tenure with the Astros, so why are you so sure he is certain to miss significant time again this coming season?

And I will keep my mouth shut about it as I hope other posters will as well. You can't argue with the results from last year. In Dusty I trust!

Lets look at the lineup from a different perspective…. Lets keep the guys who are locked in longterm with the astros up at the top and those that arent who may be free agents or negotiating a new contract more towards the bottom… i dont have all the contracts in front of me, but if we are looking to extend pena or tucker's contract in the next coming years it would make since to put him at the end so he doesnt get as many bats in a season to put up monster numbers and want a monster contract.

Lets do:

Altuve
Abreu
Yordan
Bregman
Brantley
Pena
Tucker
Chas
Maldy

Why would we ever want to risk a runner going from first to third on a ball hit to CF? Seems grossly incompetent or negligent to not play Dubon in CF everyday, regardless of pitcher.

We also get a special opening day game vs the White Sox on ESPN too. I guess after 4 WS appearances and 6 ALCS ESPN is starting to notice.
