They are certainly the group spending the money like it's just a game of monopoly. The thing is only one team can win the East and West and only three others total can make it from LA, SD, SF, ATL, NYM and PHI. And that's assuming only the Central winner makes it.
Someone is getting left out. It would be hilarious if it were the Mets or Pads.
What exactly do you think the Mets should have done instead?
Your options:
1) gut a farm system that is top heavy and not deep to maybe compete for the last wild card, but still have the same problem next year, but absolutely no farm and no way to rebuild unless you do a full year down
2) sign fringed major league players to fill the roster and not be competitive
3) spend a little and trade most of what you have in the farm to maybe be competitive, but higher payroll and still gutted farm
4) you are the richest owner in the game by far, you want to win because you are a life long fan, you laugh at a "tax" named in your honor, and you try to compete
Of those 4 which makes the most sense? These are not the Wilpon lolMets...I what they have done might or might not work, but they are going to win and soon, or Stevo will spend until 1) he's broke, or they do 2) win
