I hear ya. I may be totally wrong but I just get the feeling Jung is never gonna pan out due to health. I think he also brings more of a haul. I'm fine with Smith/ Duran at 3B for the next decade.
I think that is why Mr. Gigem has Jung as a "maybe."

According to Bacsick(sp) this was the plan from Boras and the Rangers all along getting Rocker and Porter. If so, the baseball anti-christ did us a solid. Gotta be the CY influence.
He served himself.

He got a SP he had in 2021 that was injured and didn't sign, to be drafted Top 3, get great money (more than he was projected) by dangling another player to get drafted and signed for even-money.

We good. They good. Alls good.

In your quest to prove things not being debated, you missed my point which was that you said nobody would draft a RP at the top of the draft.

The Rangers did in fact... do that.

I never claimed Rocker was a RP nor that the Rangers drafted him to be a RP.
And once again...amazingly...you ignored/missed my point.

I'll type this slowly, try to keep up.

The Rangers aren't going to draft a pitcher high in the 1st round WITH THE INTENTION of them being a reliever.

No team is. And no matter how many times you try to bring up Dillon Tate, THEY DIDN'T DRAFT HIM TO BE A RELIEVER, THEY DRAFTED HIM TO BE A STARTER.

Was that bad evaluation and consequently a bad pick? Yes, no one would argue that. They based the decision on the 1 season that Tate was a SP in college (8-5, 2.26 ERA in 14 starts). He was a starter for the majority of his first 4 seasons in the minors, by the way, so it's not like he immediately became a reliever after the draft.

Tate wound up a reliever, which is what he probably always was. But that doesn't change the fact that he was drafted to be a starting pitcher.....which leads me back to my point, that the Rangers aren't drafting a pitcher high in the 1st round with the INTENTION of them being a reliever.

Good Lord, you make the simplest things complicated.

This Kumar Rocker shoulder surgery coyness is a bit odd now that they have an agreement. Rangers playing dumb. Rocker playing mute.

He had shoulder surgery in September. Kip ***g and Young basically played dumb when asked about what it was and Rocker said he can't talk about it. A little weird for a guy drafted and a deal done. That said, his velocity has been good in the brief time he played this year. So I assume all is good.

There is zero chance the Rangers were unaware of his shoulder surgery. We talked about it, here.

This was dated July 3, 2022:

Quote:

Teams received medical records relating to Kumar Rocker this weekend, which should enhance the former Vanderbilt right-hander's chances of going in the first round of the 2022 Draft.

It's now known that Rocker had shoulder surgery last September.
This is what becomes interesting:
Quote:

Had Rocker participated in MLB's pre-Draft MRI program a year ago, the rules at the time would have mandated that the Mets offer him at least 60 percent of the $4,739,900 assigned pick value ($2,843,940) in order to qualify for a compensation choice if he didn't sign because of concerns about his elbow or shoulder. But he opted not to and also elected not to attend the MLB Draft Combine this June, where he could have taken a pre-Draft physical that would have guaranteed him 75 percent of the assigned value based on where he gets selected later this month.
If this blows up on the Rangers, it would not only impact Rocker, but Porter as well. If we don't sign Rocker below slot... we don't have much to offer Porter, which means we essentially end up with a completely lost draft.

We'd net our 5th Rd (Chandler Pollard (HS).

Our 6th was unranked and our 8, 9, and 10th Rd picks were 4Yr SR+ that were likely picked for Slot money to sign Porter.

If the Rangers didn't inspect Rocker, then JD needs to be fired.

I haven't seen the Rangers comments about Rocker, so I'm interested to see how they played dumb.

I was coming here to say how great it was to see our future OF win the HR Derby, only to be deflated by the idea that the Rangers FO was unaware of what every fan knew.

Obviously they weren't totally unaware. Hence the term playing dumb. That said, Boras and Rocker shared no medical information last year. None. So it does beg the question of just how much was shared with the Rangers this round. And Rocker seemed somewhat surprised they picked him

8 into this video is where they talk about what they've seen, what they haven't seen, and then stumble around when asked to confirm if the surgery was considered minor like Boras says

Apparently they got a couple of good reports from his doc, who is apparently well known. At the same time, they say they have seen no scans nor did they do their own exam yet. And again, he looked sharp in 20 innings. So signs point to fine

Day dreaming here but imagine this line up next year.

Semien
Soto
Seager
Garcia
Garver
Lowe
Heim
Smith
Taveras

That's sick. Especially considering the pitching that should arrive through next year and into 2024. I'm all aboard the Soto train currently.

Who knows, but CY and JD better be doing their due diligence on it. According to some, we're one of the favorites to get him.

I really like the draft after the CWS. I think it really gave MLB to bring in clutch CWS players (if they wanted), but also allow the focus in baseball to be on the Draft. I liked the college coaches input. I think MLB did a good job.

Normally, we'd chew on all the players we've never heard of, but with the Draft moved back (which I like), focus now turns to the trade deadline and we'll know in two weeks (Aug 2) for the trade deadline. I know they made changes on trading drafted players. I think it used to be you couldn't trade a player until 1 year after signing. I don't know that any of these players can be used in trades, but it would be nice.

The video wasn't as bad as I expected. They spent a fair amount of time talking about his surgery.

It sounded to me like they got caught unprepared for the question that it was a "minor" surgery. If Boras described it as such, they probably disagreed with the characterization. There was a question about the Labrum.

I was under the impression it was more of a major surgery and they were aware of it.

That was probably the 1st interview I remember seeing of Kip. He didn't seem as comfortable as CY in front of a camera. I don't mean this disparagingly, but he came across as a bit autistic. I come across that way when I'm talking about certain topics. He had way too much information that he wanted to share and was filtering it down as he spoke. It comes across as a factual bullet points.

CY helped repackage it. To ME... that interview looked like CY was the decision maker and pulled the trigger but didn't know enough about the background and scouting and wanted to rely on Kip. Kip was the brains and CY was the mouth.

I have a feeling scouting prospects and the draft are not a strong suit for CY. He may be a little more hands-off. He used a lot general references to who Rocker was, whereas, Kip referenced actually scouting points like "I've seen him pitch 7 times in person."

JD did better when he trusted his scouting team and didn't try to look like he actually did the scouting.

I'm still positive about the picks.

I think this Mac Engel article captures your frustration.

It reads like a hate letter to Boras as much as anything.

Quote:

Credit part-time Texas Rangers employee Scott Boras for making this dream possible.

Once again the most powerful agent in any sport set his demonic hooks in the Rangers.

I get the hate of Boras. Boras makes a living on new and naive GMS who are looking to turn teams around. JD got abused by him and so did owner Tom Hicks.

The Rangers were practically rid of Boras until CY.

Seager and Semien are both Boras guys. And both of our 1st two picks in this draft are Boras guys.

At the time of the interview above, the Rangers had not yet picked Porter.

Taking Rocker with the #3 pick was risky by itself. Knowing you got the #1 HS pitcher because you took Rocker makes the pair of picks pretty good, IMO.
