I'm surprised at how bad the pitching is. 10 runs on opening night?

Meant Seager not Semien (on error and weak throw)

Seager didn't have an error on the play. Hernandez walked and scored on Gurriel's double.

Rangers front office will never learn that in order to win you have to have quality pitching. During the off-season they spent a boatload of money on Semien and Seager but Gray was the only decent pitcher they signed. Never been a fan of Jon Daniels.

Buying pitching is largely a failed proposition. Most of a staff has to be built from the draft. They have sucked at drafting for a long time, but they finally have some quality in the pipeline on the way. It's just not quite ready yet

Terrible…… Sborz was dog manure last year also and woody brought him out to "protect" the lead.

We're really surprised? Middle infield and one SP was addressed. It's not like the Blue Jays are devoid of talent at the plate. This team isn't making the playoffs. I'm looking for better than last year and address more issues in the off-season.

10 runs is a lot of runs to give up. Especially on opening day when you're supposed to be using your best pitchers because everyone is fresh.

My point was if you have the money to spend on free agents, then why not go after a couple of stud pitchers? Obviously they don't have any young stud pitchers in the farm system due to poor drafting, so get the pitching to fill in the gaps. Ranger fans deserve better. Daniels has never impressed me and poor drafting of pitchers reflects on him and the front office.

And? It's baseball. It happens. I'm sure Toronto didn't expect their opening day starter to go a third of an inning.

Pitchers didn't get as long in Spring Training as they normally get this year. Could have a little to do with it.

They do have some young stud pitchers in the pipeline. What they dont have is a lot of position talent in the pipeline. Pitchers tend to be a huge crapshoot. Guys aren't UFA for a long time in their career, and when they finally get to UFA and land that big deal, they are often about ready to exit their prime and start breaking down. TJ surgery, etc.

Yep. I hope the flow of Opening Day is the ONLY thing that winds up being reminiscent of last year.

Also, not striking out at all through 8 innings of play is unheard of in today's MLB.

I'm not a fan of JD, either, but I think the FO did what they needed to do.

Pitching is the hardest position to fill and the most expensive. The Rangers have stocked up on SP prospects and we have two waves coming.

Getting Gray and Martin Perez were good additions.

Getting Semien and Seager may have been 1 yr early, but you've gotta pull those guys in and build the clubhouse.

With Dunning (27), Hearn (27), Allard (24), and Howard (25) we need a pair of middle rotation guys.

Next is AJ Alexy (24),

The big crop is Leiter (21) and Winn (22). We need an Ace and a #2 guy.

Quote:

Leiter has the stuff and moxie to be an ace once he refines his command, which gets spotty at times, and the only thing he has to prove is his ability to handle an increased workload in pro ball.
Winn:
Quote:

In addition to his physical ability, he also has the intelligence to read hitters and the confidence to throw any pitch in any count, ingredients that should help him become a frontline starter.

I think our biggest opportunity to add a SP will be at the trade deadline. Somebody needing to dump a big salary player with a couple years and willing to eat some of the money for better prospects.

Look at starting pitching that signed this past offseason and you'll find a bunch of 30-31 year olds with career era's close to 4 getting $25 mill a year. That money is much better spent on Seager and Semien, waiting for the young pitching to develop more, then go supplement with a signing and/or trade for 2023

You sign that type now and you basically waste them in 2022, and when you start to need them most, they are 33 and scuffling along. Possibly mixing in a TJ surgery. It's mostly Kevin Millwoods and Chan Ho Parks. You don't do it just to do it

Season analysis from Game 1.

One take-away for me from the game was that the team really looked mature, discipline, and fundamentally sound.

Offensively: Not a lot of bad swings. Good contact. Moved the ball around and scored a bunch of runs. This early in the season, they look ready to go.

Defensively: Pretty sound. A few plays could have been better, but a pick-off, a stop by Simien up the middle to get an out and slow a rally. Defense looked pretty good.

Starting Pitching: Gray looked good early. Looked like he lost Command and the wheels started to come off. He recovered a bit to get a few more outs. 1st game. Amped up, brought a new pitch to the table. You'd expect there to be a bit of variance. Also, when you go hitless that long, it sometimes works against you when you get someone on base. Now, you are pitching from the stretch, and no longer throwing from the wind-up. Very common for a pitcher to struggle there. All-in-all, pretty efficient and encouraging pitching. Better than the numbers reflect.

Relief Pitching: Let's face it... this is who we thought they'd be. I said we need the SP to get us Innings so we don't chew up our RP. We don't have the BP to go 4+ IP on a regular basis. These guys will settle in and we'll churn through some guys to find out who can be effective.

Enjoyable game.

Just some updates from the Farm

Round Rock (1-3):
G1: Latz - 4.0 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO (Loss)
G2: Arihara - 3.0 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 SO (Loss)
G3: Alexy - 3.0 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 5 SO (No Decision)
G4: Winn - 4.0 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 SO (No Decision)

Frisco (1-0):
G1: Bradford (24-LHSP) - 4.1 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 SO (No decision)
- Baylor kid who pitched in A+ Hickory and AA Frisco, last year

Hickory (0-1):
G1: White - 3.0 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO

I don't recall SPs getting more than 3IP this early in the season. Historically, I seem to recall 2.0 IP. You usually have a bunch of guys and need to spread the innings around. You also bring them along slowly in the early part of the season to build their strength in terms of # of games pitched.

Sborz and Santana weren't good last year........cant tell me those were the best possible options to round out the BP and if Barlow is supposed to be the closer, why did he not pitch? We had to have had better options?

I don't normally get upset when my team loses but this was a big ass choke.

This game went almost exactly like I expected it would, minus blowing the 7-0 lead. This team is going to hit and score a lot of runs. Just don't see that we have much on the pitching side. At least the games should be entertaining. I do not miss seeing Gallo, Odor, etc strikeout at near record pace.

I really do like this lineup. Can this team be good enough to hang around, and then make a move for more pitching at the trade deadline? We'll see......

Middle relievers are always a crap shoot. Sborz looked promising at the end of last season. It is hard to get upset with a guy giving up a hit to Guerrero who hit .311, 48 HRs, .401 OBP, last season, at the age of 22. Like his father, he is only going to get better.

Hernandez went .296, 32 HR, .346 OBP, last season.

We know Sborz isn't great, but lets see how things play out. He had 69 K in 59 IP, last season. He has some potential.

Quote:

Nobody believes that. Odor could get 2 HRs scoring 5 runs... the Rangers lose 4-5 and you'd post incessantly about how Odor's single K cost the Rangers the game.
