Yeah, getting nothing with runners at 2nd/3rd with no outs feels like it could come back to haunt you.
It's early, but unless I missed one Valdez has yet to throw a breaking ball for a strike. That won't play for very long.

Honestly, our batters just have to expect the umps to be against us. Either by directive or coincidence, we've been screwed over more than other teams and the trend is continuing this year.

That sounds great in theory. But these guys are facing major league pitchers. It's hard enough to get a hit if you're swinging at strikes. Multitudes harder if you're expanding the zone. So I disagree. If it's a ball, take it, more likely to have the ump call it a ball then getting a hit on a ball you're chasing.
The question is how long will this continue? Until the Yankees win a ring? Maybe after the report comes out they'll get the same or worse treatment… hey, it could happen

You don't protect to get a hit. You protect to avoid getting rung up on a ball that's close, attempting to foul it off and extend the AB for a better pitch. Some guys have good enough bat control to do it. Castro makes no effort to frame any pitches... noticed JV get a bit frustrated last start & tonight he still is too quick to catch & throw without pulling it back to the zone.

So it's easy, huh? I still stand by my point. Angel Hernandez, who is terrible, was 88% accurate even in his last shifty game, which was bad even for him. So you have a 12% chance he'll call a ball a strike. Mlb average is 94% accuracy.
I agree with everything you're saying for college baseball and lower. But these guys know the strike zone. If they see it out of the hand and think it's a ball, they shouldn't swing. If they think it's a strike but a good, tough pitch, they'll try to fight it off.
