Ya its not a game. When I was a kid I loved the ASG - to me the best part is still the player introductions (still is the best part). Back in the day with just a few games on tv each week it was a way to see all the stars of the league.

I get it is an exhibition. I even stated as such in my first post expressing my dislike about it. If you think it will be fun, great. I think it is pure silliness right up there with all the other BS Manfred thinks will be good for the Game.

Again I'm sorry to be such a kill joy but IMO it is simply stupid to determine the "winner" of a baseball game based upon who wins a glorified batting practice.
Consider it to be way better than the alternative, a tie. Given that it's an exhibition, extra innings are not realistic as they are not going to throw more pitchers out there that they didn't plan to get any work that day. Take it for what it is

I have found it odd that as a kid, I longed for the All-Star game and loved the intros and watched the whole thing to see the Astros in it, because generally we sucked during the 70s and 80s and it was a chance to see our guys shine on the national stage.

Now I find the All-Star break boring as hell and just want it to be Thursday alreay.

Good point. When you're team is legit competing for a 6th straight ALCS and hopefully another WS - this all feels like an unnecessary distraction

Of course, given our health issues I'm urgent glad we are getting some time off

Here's a little stat I dug up today while procrastinating the start of a new project.

If Verlander leads the league in wins this year, he'll be only the third pitcher EVER to lead the league in wins in three different decades.

Here's the short list:

Warren Spahn: 1949, 1950, 1953, 1957, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961

Bob Feller: 1939, 1940, 1941, 1946, 1947, 1951

Verlander has led the league previous in 2009, 2011, and 2019.

What's the consensus of this group - are we going to make a move for an upgrade at 1B? Or a big bat for the OF?

The chatter all seems inconsistent and scattered, so I'm guessing no real smoke to anything.

Just curious if others thought we were making any big moves

I'm sure we will add someone if Brantley isn't looking like he is coming back

I'd like us to add a legit OFer or a big upgrade at 1B but I doubt we make any big moves.

I'm guessing we may add a BP arm and maybe a 4th OFer that's better than McCormick and Siri.

In my very first post on the subject I stated I'd rather see a tie than this silliness to determine a "winner" and stick by it.

I am expecting us to sign a guy or two that is not considered a big splash. Many of us b**** about it, and then they turn out to be pretty damn good fits.

I could see us making a move for Benintendi

Only makes sense if Brantley is not coming back. Plus the risk of having the play at TOR is real.

I just want to get better. if that means bullpen depth and a platoon / bench bat fine. But ideally, we add a big bopper that can play 1st/OF/DH and a med/high leverage left-handed bullpen arm.

I wish we'd go get Josh Bell. Seems like a good fit and just a huge bat upgrade over Yuli.

I'd take him as either a rental for the year, or as a sign and extend deal. He's 29 and would make an excellent addition to the core of our team.

Bell is my #1 wish list item

Well besides Soto but that's just a pipe dream.

It would be awesome to obtain Bell, especially if Brantley is unavailable for an extended period of time.

I accept the fact I'm a killjoy on this but stand by that my opinion is 100% correct.

When MLB realizes the Astros' window is still wide ass open in 2024, I'm sure that will get pushed back to 2025-26

What optimism do you have when it comes to Brantley coming back? Mine is very very little, given they had to shut him down after a couple of swings of a bat.
Would you really base a trade off of the *possibility* of playing Toronto in the playoffs? I wouldn't.

Astros took Ryan Clifford in the 11th. The OF/1B is the first HS we have drafted this year and was projected to go in the 3rd or 4th. He's almost certainly an overslot bonus guy that we were able to take due to money saved earlier. The only odd thing to me is that we have not drafted an IF yet but have 4 OF.

I feel like after 2024 and 2025 we'll be at a crossroads somewhat.

'24/25 will mark to a potential end to having a roster with anyone outside of LMJ of our 2017 champions. Good bye Tuve & Bregman? If we're able to extend Verlander this may be his final goodbye too.
'25/26 will be some big time decisions. Framber, Javier, Urquidy, Tucker, and possibly Pressly (assuming he vests in 24)

Lets go win 1 or 2 more titles before that.

Last time we were at a crossroads in 2020, we came within one game of the World Series

I figured it out. Brantley isn't actually hurt. We're working with him at 1B so he can platoon with Yuli after we acquire Soto.

I ****ing hate that guy. Single A players were making like $6k a year and weren't even provided housing except by generosity of host families. When COVID hit they tried to make them pay for their own room. They raised their pay finally but it's still like $500 a week during the season. Just ridiculous.

They don't need anything like six figures, but when even the greedy-ass federal government is like "yeah, we aren't going to tax you on that", you know it's low.

I guess if you're going to not sign someone it would be in the 11th when not signing him doesn't hurt your bonus pool money. But still, with as much as we want to replenish our minors I would hope we're expecting to sign him.
