so how expensive would Josh Bell be?
2-month rental with an .860 OPS
That is the question. What is Bell worth?
Lets look at 2021.
Kyle Schwarber TradeHe's not too dissimilar to Bell. He had 1 year left plus a player option. Limited defensively. Can only play LH, DH, or a very poor 1B. But he was crushing the ball before the trade. .910 OPS in WSH. Boston gave up
Aldo Ramirez, a 20-year-old Single A pitching prospect. Baseball America 22nd in the Sox System. SoxProspects had him 8th. Currently, he's 10th in the Nats system per MLB.
Joey Gallo TradeGallo was held in much higher regard. I am not entirely sure why, maybe it's the defense. Maybe it was 2 years of control. He was also crushing the ball. .869 OPS in TEX. New York gave up
Josh Smith (#14 in NY System per MLB),
Ezequiel Duran (#15),
Trevor Hauver (#23), &
Glen Otto (#28). A much larger and better package, for sure. Duran has moved up to #3, Smith to #8, & Hauver to #18 in the Rangers system. Otto has been on the big league roster (6.16 ERA over 18 starts as a Ranger).
Kris Bryant TradeA rental, but a probably more valued rental since Bryant isn't locked into corner IF/DH. As a Cub in '21 his OPS was .861. San Fran gave up
Alexander Canario (#9 in SF system per MLB) &
Caleb Kilian (#30). Based on Kilian's quick rise, he was probably valued much higher than #30. Kilian is now #6 in CHI and got called up while Canario is #18.
Lets assume we have a lesser-rated farm system. Move every trade up 2 prospect spots.
Schwarber Value: #6 Peter Solomon
Gallo Value: #12 Chayne McDermott, #13 Jaime Melendez, #21 Matthew barefoot, #26 Corey Julks
Bryant Value: #7 Shawn Dubin, #28 Spencer Arrighetti
I don't think I'd flinch at any of those deals. I also don't think Bell is going to cost as much as Gallo or Bryant. I don't think Diaz, Leon, or Brown would even be in the conversation.
