Javier can come off less rest for game 7 if necessary than LMJ, and LMJ would get full rest between games 3 and 6 with the travel day.

It's not uncommon for rule changes regarding equipment to work this way. If there's a rule change about equipment, you can be grandfathered in. When MLB started to require batting helmets in the 70s, it was only for new players, and veteran players weren't required to wear them. When they started to require an ear flap, it was again only required for new players.amercer said:

Okay give me some background on this.
Maldy played with pooholes with the angels. While with that team, maldy used his bats a few times and liked the way they felt. Before game 1, he requested some bats from Albert and they were delivered. He used one in yesterday's game. Before the game, buster had come through and noticed it and maldy told him the story. After the game, MLB told him he couldn't use the bats anymore.
To add to that. There was a rule change in 2010 that made that bat no longer legal. Since Pujols was already in the league, he was grandfathered in and could continue to use it. Since Maldy came into the league after then, he is not allowed to use it. IIRC he had TJ surgery a couple years ago and has nowhere near the same velocity as before. He's more of a slider/sinker/change guy now.
