It's odd to see a lot of the starters not playing in these games. Most other teams have been involving their everyday guys

Let's Predict Jeremy Pena's #s for 2022.

MLB 2022
Games:
HR:
AVG:
OBP:
SLG:
OPS:
Those averages feel about right to me for Pena. I see a pretty wide range of outcomes tbh.

I think his upside case is ROY. There's a reason we were willing to let Correa walk without much thought and gift wrap him the job. He's a plus defensive short stop with power. Not a whole lot of short stops "look" like him. I could see .800 OPS with 15-20 HR if things go well.

But there's obviously risk. While his AAA/LIDOM stats are promising, we don't have a great extended sample of him the past couple years. I could see him getting off to a rough start and spend the latter part of next year in Sugar Land working on stuff. Bregman and Tucker both needed time to adjust to the show. Possible Pena will need that too.

My base case is that he gets off to a good start like Meyers last year, goes through a little slump as opposing pitchers figure him out, but then get things figured out and finish 2022 with .725 OPS and 10 HRs and display alot of promise heading into 2023.

Jeremy Pena predictions

MLB 2022
Games: 110 (Diaz gets other starts)
HR: 15
RBI: 50
AVG: .265
OBP: .315
SLG: .430
OPS: .745

I'm terrible about predicting OPS though

Pena

.250/.300/.400, 14 HR The .300 OBA may be optimistic. His minor league stats looks like he hardly ever walks.

If he ends the season with a 100 wRC+ i would say its a win..

Spotrac's estimates:
Diaz - 4 M
Montero - 3.1 M
Stanek - 2.1 M
Maton - 1.4 M
Goodrum - 2.1 (looks like its already been updated to actual)

All these numbers look fair to me. I'm glad we're avoiding arbitration.

I think this is on the slightly optimistic side, but I agree with it. I think the projections are sleeping on his avg and power somewhat.

Yeah I think he's a 20-25 HR guy if it's a 162 game stat line

That seems low, but if Josh James wants to pay the Astros $800,000 to let him pitch this year, so be it.

I have a strong feeling that he won't be on the Astros 40-man by the end of the season.

In addition, the deal also essentially has a Shohei Ohtani rule with the designated hitter becoming universal in the new collective bargaining agreement. The new rule stipulates that if the starting pitcher is also hitting in the lineup, then that player remains as the DH even if he is pulled from the start. Thus, if Ohtani, say, pitched five innings, he would still hit through the entire game. This rule is for the life of the new CBA, not just for 2022 and the hope is to promote more two-way players.

Also ghost runners are back.

Oh please. It's not to promote more 2 way players. It's the baseball equivalent of a Bill of Attainder. It's made for Ohtani and him alone.
