That obviously not bad news, but I can't see is going over the luxury tax this year in order to extend anyone when we can give them the same deal in a few months without having to deal with the penalties of being a 2x offender.
One creative idea would be to extend JV for $10-15M. That would lower his AAV by averaging that against his big salary this year.
I don't think JV would go for only getting paid $15M.
Agree with both. If you truly believe JV can do it. Give him an incentives contract with a base around 15 that can get up to 30 or something like that.

A player counts for his average annual value. So any extension will make Lances cap value go up, unless he's gonna sign for less than $6 mil per or something that obviously wouldn't happen.
For the same reason, any extension signed by a Verlander where he makes less in the extended years than he does now would lower his luxury tax contribution this year.
