Santana not in the line up tonight. Rougie better do something. Too big a series to be not playing your best players.
So the must win games have already started. I might recommend some Nellie Cush for the tension. It's a long season.

Nobody said must win. But to pretend this isn't a big series is foolish. If this team is to make the playoffs, they're likely to be within a game or two of the Rays at the end.

IDGAF if it's june. Your one game back of a team you're likely to be battling the rest of the year for the WC. How this team does in the next couple weeks is likely to dictate what JD does before the deadline as well.
I'm fairly certain JD already knows how close they are, and where they can go with the right pieces, even if they drop a couple. Still three full months to go, not anywhere close to "must win" territory yet.

When did I ever say "must win"?

I think the phrase you are looking for is, "best performing players."

I think on the crappy carpet at the Trop, you go with the better Defensive guy.

if we finish out to the Allstar break at 6-3 over next 9 games, Its going to be very interesting to see what moves the Rangers management makes to get 1-2 top end starters and if we even can make that kind of move.
JD should find a way to acquire his "unicorn" Zack Greinke. He should be available, the main issue will be his contract. Need the owners to step in and let JD pursue it.

Greinke would be controllable for multiple seasons, he would help us this year and next year at least. Don't know the full assortment of details tho.

JD has tried so many times, would be nice to finally acquire him.
Arizona is still only 2GB on the WC, and 42-41. Even if Az faulters, I would think there is zero chance JD goes after Greinke.

@ 35 - 17GS, 3.08 ERA. Over 200 IP in 4 of last 5 years.

He is signed for $34.5M this year and $35M for 2 more years.

Do you sign a FA 36 year old Greinke to 2yr - $70M?

We are at $85.7M in 2020. If you believe the $170M payroll possibility for 2020, then Greinke might be a consideration. If you do not... and I don't, then $35M for Greinke in 2020 would put a huge strain on 2020 and 2021. The payroll would be at $120.7M in 2020, with Santana, Mazara and Gallo Arbs... which would mean we'd be close on the payroll limit... needing a 3B and RPs.

I think we'll be more like $145-150M for 2020.

And what would you have to give up for Greinke?! With all the teams still in the WC, I would think Az picks up no $$$

AP knows this as well but we will be big players this off season according to my conversation with Erin Woodward.

We should be.

I think we can put together a really good team. Keep forsythe, Santana, pence. Work on building the bullpen up and get a decent starter or 2.

Combo James McCann with one of the several top line pitchers due to be FAs and I'll be happy.

Here is the lineup info. Chirinos is having a pretty good year for the Rays.

Texas Rangers lineup for June 28, 2019 against the Tampa Bay Rays: starting pitchers are Lance Lynn for the Rangers and Yonny Chirinos for the Rays.
Texas starts a three game set in Tampa against one of their Wild Card rivals, the Rays, and have their kind of currently normal lineup out there.
The lineup:
Choo DH
Calhoun LF
Elvis SS
Mazara RF
Gallo CF
Cabrera 3B
Odor 2B
Guzman 1B
Mathis C

Texas Rangers transactions: Jesse Biddle, a lefthanded relief pitcher, has been claimed on waivers from the Seattle Mariners, the team announced today. To make room on the 40 man roster for Biddle, the Rangers have transferred Jeffrey Springs from the 10 day injured list to the 60 day injured list.

Biddle, 27, was a first round pick of the Philadelphia Phillies in 2010. He was traded by the Phillies to the Pirates in 2016 for Yoervis Medina, claimed on waivers by the Atlanta Braves in March, 2016, and then was sent to the Mariners along with Arodys Vizcaino (who is out for the year) in exchange for Anthony Swarzak and cash in what was essentially a money-neutral struggling reliever for struggling reliever deal.

Biddle had a solid rookie campaign for Atlanta in 2018, putting up a 3.11 ERA and a 3.88 FIP in 63.2 IP over 60 appearances, but has been awful in 2019, with a 7.54 ERA and a 5.61 FIP in 22.2 IP.

I'm kind of at a loss as to the purpose of this move. The Rangers currently have a seven man bullpen, with Jesse Chavez in the rotation (kind of), consisting of Peter Fairbanks, Shawn Kelley, Jose Leclerc, Brett Martin, Chris Martin, Shelby Miller and Locke St. John. I'm not sure who would be bumped for Biddle, and if the Rangers wanted to go with an eight man bullpen, there would seem to be internal options who would get the nod first. And with Matt Bushseemingly close to being major league ready, and Kyle Dowdy starting a rehab assignment (which will necessitate him being returned to the 25 man roster in 30 days), you've got other bullpen options that are in the pipeline. The Rangers would seem to need bullpen arms who can be shuttled between AAA and the majors, and Biddle, who is out of options, has to stay in the majors or go on waivers.

It will be interesting to see what move the Rangers make when Biddle joins the 25 man roster, and whether they opt to send down or cut ties with a position player (since they have a 4 man bench right now), or if they send down one of the lefty relievers (either B. Martin or St. John) and stick with a seven man pen.

As for Springs, him moving to the 60 day injured list, after being i.l.'d just a week and a half ago, is kind of ominous. His injury was listed as biceps tendinitis, but that can sometimes be a symptom of elbow problems. In any case, Springs won't be an option on the active roster again until mid-August.

Julio Pablo Martinez in June: .328/.430/.522.

Starting to figure things out after strugging early a High A Down East. Either he or Taveras may be the CF of the future. Taveras has been hitting well lately too and got bumped to AA.

I wonder if that was a move to introduce him to the Rangers, to see about what they can do with him.

Or maybe they hope to get a couple bullpen sessions to see if they can tweak something.

Confused as to why some of y'all think we should be sellers this offseason....we're 4.5 GB the Astros and have a shot to actually contend for the division, assuming we continue to play the way we have been. This team could be the real deal (with the addition of a solid SP at the deadline), only time will tell.

Not sure if I've seen anyone on this board want the rangers to be sellers? Pretty sure we're all in agreement with you.

I think a few weeks ago, the board was divided half and half whether we should be buyers or sellers. After this last run, I think most, if not all, are cautious buyers at worst.

Yes, a month ago our wild card chances weren't as good. So sellers during this season? Sure, if we weren't in the WC race. But sellers this offseason? OMG, JD would get shot if he sold off this offseason with the increased stadium revenues flowing in from the new stadium. I fully expect to add payroll for next season, and quite a bit of it. We might even add payroll during this season, if we acquire a salary dump starting pitcher.

Yea. I was in the sellers boat (along with most) going into this season. This team has shocked the **** out of me and now I'm just enjoying the ride and hoping JD can find some controllable help..

Orioles beating up on the Indians.

Could be in a position to gain on several teams if the current result holds.

I just want to make note of Andrus getting caught on the base path. Not because I think it was stupid. I think once he started, he should have just committed.

My point though is, every player does boneheaded plays. Sometimes it is taking a known risk. Sometimes it is just sleeping.

Think that's a lot of us. II was hoping Minor would be good enough to grab some prospects and had the same thoughts when Pence came out hot. Now I'd like them to hold on to both.

This has been the thing eating me up all season. We've looked for that elusive ace for over 20 years. Roger Clemens spurned us several times, Randy Johnson turned us down, Zach Greinke picked another team over us. We had a real ace for 1/2 a season, then cliff lee left us for the national league.

WE FINALLY HAVE AN ACE. He is old yes, but he doesn't have a ton of mileage on his arm and he's the kind of pitcher whose stuff ages well. He loves it here. He loves this team. We should extend minor........not trade him. We already traded 2 #2 quality pitchers in hamels and Darvish for prospects. The Darvish trade has appeared to work out, while the hamels trade was a disaster. Let the guys we have in the minor leagues develop. I just don't think some team is going to give us adequate compensation for minor, the guy is just too good right now.

Stros on the wrong side of history again. First team in mlb history to lose back to back interleague games by double digits.

At a minimum, I think Mazara gets to 2nd... you'd have the 3B chasing Andrus away from 2nd base... likely diving at him.

To be clear, that was when it looked like we were going to be staring at a rebuild that would take several years and prior to hearing that the team may be willing to spend significant money to be competitive next year.

Hamels is a #2?

Ummm... he has finished 5th, 6th twice and 8th in Cy Young voting. He is currently 4th in NL ERA, at 2.92.

Career 3.38 ERA in 410 GS over 14 seasons... averaging 8.5 SO/9IP

8 Seasons with over 200 IP. Hamels is 35. And has 16 GS in the post-season.

Now, let's contrast that to Mike Minor, who has yet to receive a single Cy Young vote. Career 3.80 ERA, with one season over 200 IP. 155 GS. He is 31. And 6.1 IP in Post season.

LOVE what Minor is doing this season, but let's tap the breaks on anointing him anything, just yet.
