Upcoming roster decision discussion

I think Forsythe needs to be the one to go. Can't risk losing Santana, he is playing well. And given our rotation issues, we need all the bullpen arms we can get, so dropping one reliever from the staff may not be an option.
IIRC, Forsythe was given the nod because he plays 1B and Santana was not considered a 1B.

Unless the Rangers find another SP, they'll have to have the extra RP.

Gio appears to be going to the Brewers.

Santana won't clear Waivers. The Rangers could try to trade him. I'd prefer they keep him.
Pence has more value than Forsythe, but I'm not sure how that plays out.

How about we finally move
Choo: .307, .416 OBP, 1 HR
or does Mazara or DeShileds have any options left?
Mazara: .203, .295 OBP, 2 HR
DeShields: .207, .352 OBP, 1 HR, 6 SB

Regardless, we really need another SP. I think Huang could be the one sent down (assuming Smyly stays on IL), and a rotation of RPs from the minors circulate.
Santana is hitting .350 and he can play tons of different positions. The rangers would have to be the most incompetent team in the league to let him go or trade him for peanuts.

He was also one of our best hitters in spring training as well. It's entirely possible that he could be a late bloomer like Nelson Cruz. The rangers had better not screw this one up. I think a smart organization would find a way to get him in the lineup everyday..... somehow.
"Late Bloomer?" That's how we call it now?

Gallo has now struck out looking in 3 consecutive plate appearances in which the called third strike was a ball. Unbelievable

I've seen enough of chavez to say that he sucks and shouldn't have been brought back.

Chavez up to 46 pitches already in relief.

For all the criticism DD gets, he does make some fantastic plays.

Just saved this game.

One more comment... for Sampson to have been called on to pitch tonight, IMO, it had to have been predetermined that he was available to pitch, today.

5.0 IP into a "bullpen game" using only 2 RPs is pretty good, I would think. You know you are without Springs and Huang.

Lots of extra innings would be a disaster...

The whole experience is depressing,

Depressing ballpark, depressing team to play against, trashy fans, everything they hit seems to find a hole, everything we hit ends up being a double play. All the borderline pitches seem to go there way.

Cowboys don't have a pick and aren't expected to do anything tomorrow.

I will watch the Stars live

I'll probably just DVR the rangers and watch it later if they don't lose by 10 runs.

Hearn is a Lefty. Sampson is a Righty

Oakland has all RHB, except 3 Switch hitters: Grossman, Profar and Morales.

Seattle has several Lefties:

Narvaez (C): 21G, .297, 5 HR
Dee Gordon (2B): 27 G, .283, 2 HR
Vogelbach (1B): 20 G, .317, 8 HR
Bruce (OF): 22 G, .208, 9 HR
Smith (OF): 23 G, .182, 1 HR

Made total sense to use Sampson in Oakland.

This is how it used to be against Toronto in the 1980's.

The Yankees seem to be in a tough situation.

Tons of injuries. On their 40, they have only pitchers left who are not on the 25... or on the IL.

13 pitchers on the 25
2 pitchers on 40/IL
7 position players on 40/IL
6 pitchers on 40

7 of their 25 are IFs.

When it comes to getting value out of future Rule V players, the Yankees are as good as anyone. They'll package and dump a bunch of over-hyped players for an over-priced player.

With only 3 OFs available, it would be nice to see the Rangers make a trade. I don't know anything about the 6 pitchers on the 40, but if there are a couple SPs that will be Rule Vs at the end of this year, it might be worth adding to AAA/Nashville, in hopes they have something for us in 2020.

This would allow us to extract some value out of the Pence/Santana/Forsythe decision.

I don't think we could dump Choo (Owed $21M next year) or Mazara (A1 this year) on them... DeShields (A1 this year) has too much team control.

Maybe we can dump Choo, picking up much moola. NY could try to dump him in the off-season.

Gardner:
Tauchman (28): Career 68 GP in MLB, .178, 3 HRs in those games.
Wade (24): Career 79 GP in MLB, .169, 1 HR in those games.

Frazier (24): OF-DL10 sprained ankle. Returning soon.
Hicks: DL10, stiff lower back. Out until early May?
Stanton: DL10, Grade 1 left bicep strain. Due back early May?
Judge: DL10, Strained flexor. Out until late May.
Ellsbury: DL60 (No longer on 40) -

Man, they have a ton of cash committed in 2020, and beyond:
2020 OF:
Stanton: $26M
Ellsbury: $21M
Hicks: $10.7M
Judge: A1
Gardner: FA

Scott Lucas expectation primer for tonight's Hearn start.

Quote:

When Adrian Sampson took the mound on Wednesday, Texas needed a starter for today's game. Enter Taylor Hearn, who will become the fifth pitcher to make his MLB for the Rangers in just 23 games.

Just yesterday, I'd mentioned Ariel Jurado as the unexciting but safe choice, but I meant in general, not immediately. Regardless of whether the Rangers hold the same opinion as me, Jurado isn't an option because he threw 104 pitches on Sunday. The only 40-man choices available for multiple innings are Hearn and AA lefty Joe Palumbo. Or, call up an experienced non-40 pitcher and stretch him out to the limit, which would require designating someone else for assignment and possibly that very same pitcher soon after. So, Hearn it is.

I wouldn't say he's ready. At times, he's struggled to throw any of his pitches for strikes, and he's walked or hit 13 out of 84 batters faced (15%). He's been tough to hit (.200 opposing average), but many of the hits have been hard (.414 slugging percentage). The fear is that he'll let an inning get away from him, forcing an early exit and further stressing the bullpen.

On the other hand, Hearn has struck out 26 in just 20 innings (31% rate). Despite the control lapses, he has the stuff to defeat MLB hitters and is capable of producing a line that will have you calling for his permanent addition to the rotation. I'm hopeful that he can keep Texas in the game into the middle innings and give you an idea of what's to come.

So, half of us are going to love his performance and be disappointed if he doesn't get a 2nd GS, while the other half will be disappointed in his performance and hope he doesn't get a 2nd GS. LOL.

Put me in the camp, "He pitched well, although he had struggles. He deserves another game. I really like what he brings."

I think he'll do ok tonight. It's start #2 or #3 (if he stays in rotation) that might be more of an issue. Once they have him on tape versus mlb hitters, the next mlb game or two will be harder on his as they will know more about him and his tendencies. And he'll have to adjust to that.

But looking forward to it. I was hoping we could avoid rushing Hearn or some of the other young starters to the mlb, but regardless, we'll find out how he does tonight.

Of course, I also have my sons baseball practice tonight, Aggie baseball (start time moved to 8pm), and the NFL Draft as well. Looks like I'll be busy tonight

Yanks trade for Cameron Maybin for Cash (Cleveland).

Speaking of Yanks... so, Ronald Herrera gets the nod in Nashville, to fill-in for Hearn.

Herrera was obtained from NY in Nov 2017.

The Yankees had a ton of guys based on some of the trades they had made and the Rule V was going to hit hard. They were peddling players, and I believe Herrera was among them.

Looking back, the Yanks had 3 of the 1st 11 picks:

Quote:

7. Braves: RHP Anyelo Gmez (Yankees)

9. Orioles: LHP Nestor Cortes (Yankees)

11. Mariners: IF Mike Ford (Yankees)

Here is a write-up from Feb 2018, on Herrera:

Quote:

could end up being one of the best trades Jon Daniels had ever made.
But, not so fast my friend:

Here is a link to his start to 2019 season... DL for groin strain.
https://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/baseball/news/rangers-ronald-herrera-sidelined-with-groin-strain/

It includes much of the physical trouble he has had during 2018.

Shoulder inflammation (labrum) in March 2018.

I'll be following him, as well.

Yeah, like what the best writers said, not quite ready for this but necessity kind of forced this. Hopefully he can dig deep and get a few decent innings in.
