why do people keep thinking this? The Nats had a similar record (after their horrendous start). They also accomplished in the NL East which is VASTLY better than the AL West. The Astros record is inflated due to crap teams (not saying they were wrongly considered the favorite).

Nah. We've seen this movie at home no matter what levers he pulls. I'm not saying I agree with the decision, but the bigger problem is clearly the bats in these home games.
