Heard Blummer talking about this on 790 and he says it really is a real thing for 2 reasons
One being that guys in the lineup want to do right by the ace and get super focused on playing good defense behind the ace that the focus slips a bit at the plate.
The other reason is pressure gets ratcheted up pitching behind a guy like JV. Starting from the get go with him not talking to anyone. It's just a different feel and he demands so much of himself it rubs off.
