But let's say he "comes down to earth" and finishes hitting .300 with 23 HR & 65 RBI in 100ish games, it could be close.

Top contender is Brandon Lowe TB 2b.

This was his 30th game and 59 left. If he gets to those numbers in 89 games (assuming he plays every game the rest of the way and he won't) any voter not voting him 1st for ROY needs their heads examined. And I say that being on record that baseball writers are idiots. dshedd14 excepted.

Twins beat the Yankees tonight.

Astros just a half-game back for the top seed

So what are Yordan's chances at RotY if he keeps this up. Lowe just went on the IL.

If Yordan keeps up this pace of breaking RBI records? 100% guarantee he will be AL ROY
If he keeps up this pace he will get MVP votes. Not kidding.

But let's say he "comes down to earth" and finishes hitting .300 with 23 HR & 65 RBI in 100ish games, it could be close.

If Yordan only gets 12 more HRs in the remaining 60 games this season that would be disappointing. That is cutting his on pace numbers in half basically. I would hope he can reach 28-30 HRs in 90ish total games.

Yes I have high expectations.
Say he plays 54 out of 60 and hits 12 HR...that's a 36 HR per 162 pace. Yeah it's disappointing compared to his peak Albert Pujols performance so far but you can hardly be disappointed in that pace out of a rookie. That we are even using that as a worst-case scenario is amazing.

And to think he could have been playing much earlier in place of someone else.

He came up about a week after the earliest possible date given the rules on service time. That was the key, to preserve the extra year of team control.

Fun game last night, nice crowd too.

How's attendance looking this year, are we going to hit the 3MM mark?

I have a feeling we will be thanking Luhnow for that extra year.

Agreed. And it will be interesting to see what he gets in his final year of arb. I think the current record is around $25 million. Alvarez might get $35.

I believe the numbers have been updated since last night...

thru 51 home games the Astros have drawn approximately 1.7 million fans thru the gates.

an average of 34,752 per game.

will pass 1.8 million in this series vs. the A's. Will get very close to 3 million

What's amazing is for as much love as the Dodgers are getting, we're only 2 games behind in record. Pretty awesome.

I can't see Wheeler. He's a straight rental. Unless its Wheeler for White thats not what Lunhow does.

He's got great stuff. He doesn't seem to get the results for as much movement and spin as he gets. Maybe there is room to improve based on which pitch he's using or where he's locating.

The injuries worry me, but he should be nice and cheap.

Do the advanced metrics tell a decent story on Wheeler?

Not really.

Here's what I found on baseballsavant

FB Velo 95th percentile
FB spin 63rd percentile
CB spin -71st percentile
K% - 67th percentile
Exit velo 70th percentile
Hard hit rate 67th percentile

ERA is 4.69 with FIP of 3.67. Plus he's on the IL

Hard pass

Wheeler would be an underwhelming move... but I said that about Miley too, so what do I know?

Interesting on the reliever news. That would require some roster movement in the pen.

11-1 and Yordan is patient enough to not swing at bad pitches.
That's what is so impressive. You figure the league would have a book on him by now. He's not just a slugger, but a really accomplished hitter. Is patient, will go the other way. Teams are gonna have to be careful putting the shift on him.

Now, if he could just start hitting more home runs with runners on base...

Don't those stats you provided actually show room for improvement?

High FB Velo, high spin, high K %, and a FIP that looks better than his ERA. Looks like he should have better stats than he does

That's a pretty big jump between ERA and FIP. XFIP is in the 380s. He should improve the 2nd half.

How long do you want to ignore this user?

Yeah I guess you can look at it that way. Nothing really jumps off the page for me and the recent shoulder fatigue and being a rental doesn't sit well.

I guess that's where the evaluation part comes in. Where do you draw the line in there's room for improvement and he is what he is?

Interesting
coastalAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Wheeler has the arsenal to probably benefit some from less fastball, more breaking ball. He also has the worst defense in baseball behind him and would certainly benefit from the improvement there. The shoulder fatigue is super concerning though.

Wheeler sounds like an interesting risk/reward proposition and, like other posters have pointed out, shouldn't cost us a whole lot in terms of prospects. I'd actually like him as a "lower profile" add to the pitching staff that compliments a bigger name acquisition.

It seems like the market for bigger names is shrinking though. No way Bauer or Scherzer get traded now. The Giants are like 3-4 wins away from MadBum being taken off the market. And I think the Tigers are going to demand a ton for Boyd because he has so much controllability and they don't want to get fleeced again like they did in the JV deal.

I'd take Ray or Stroman at the right price, but neither seem like guys we should "break the bank" for. My attention is pretty squarely on the Mets. The Mets should almost certainly be sellers but we'll see what their ownership decides.

If the Mets decide to go full-on rebuild, maybe we go Tucker, James, JBB, Kemp and <insert 1-2 more prospects> for a package of Thor, Wheeler and Lugo. One stop shopping.
