I agree Kemp is a bigger waste of a spot that White at this point, but the idea would be Alvarez at 1B/DH, no? If so the spot that he replaces is White on the defensive chart. You cut Kemp and you really cut an OF and then don't replace him.
He hasn't played 1B at all this season or last. The organization sees him as a DH with limited ability to play LF in smaller ball parks. He would rarely play the field

Appears they are looking at playing him in the outfield, or was Luhnow's statement just PR talk until they figure out who to send down?

Quote:

"We'll have to wait and see when the right time is," Luhnow said. "He's working on his defense right now and making sure he can play at least an average left field if he comes up here, because we're going to need him to play in the field. The bat seems to be the carrying tool for him and the power is there. We're looking forward to the time he debuts, which will be hopefully this summer."

Yikes, this lineup doesn't inspire a whole lot of confidence for tonight. Diaz with his first start in left field and Brantley and Reddick, 2 of the hottest bats on the team with a night off.

Yep.

At some point you have to give him a shot and find a spot for him.

Unfortunately it may come at the expense of Tony Kemp.
Its Kemp, White or Jake on the hot seat if they call someone up; everyone else is a regular. All 3 are out of options. Lets be honest. Its not Jake. He's easily pulling his own weight this year. You aren't getting anything of value on the trade circuit for either Kemp of White. Kemp because no one needs an extra outfielder with little power and White is, well, you know. So pick your poison and take your chances exposing one of the them to waivers and keep your fingers crossed. Or swap James/Framber as an extra arm out of the pen. I just don't see them doing that.

Admit I need to learn more about this side of things - why can't we send them down? What rule would we be triggering and why.

Namely why can't we send just send white down for Alvarez?

he's out of options so he'd have to clear waivers before being sent to the minors. So is Kemp.

Minor League Options

Definition

Players on a 40-man roster are given three Minor League "options." An option allows that player to be sent to the Minor Leagues ("optioned") without first being subjected to waivers. When a player is optioned to the Minors for a span of more than 20 days, he loses an option. Players who are optioned to the Minors are removed from a team's active 25-man roster but remain on the 40-man roster.
Upon being optioned to the Minor Leagues, a player must remain there for a minimum of 10 days before he is eligible to be recalled to the Major League roster, unless he is serving as the 26th man for a doubleheader or replacing a player who has been placed on the injured list. In these exceptions, there are no minimum number of days in which the optioned player must remain in the Minors.
For example, the Mariners optioned right-hander Dan Altavilla to Triple-A Tacoma on May 11, 2017. Altavilla would normally have been ineligible to return to the Major League roster until May 21, but he was recalled three days later, on May 14, when the Mariners placed right-hander Ryan Weber on the 10-day injured list.

An option applies to an entire season, meaning that a player can be sent to the Minors and recalled to the Majors any number of times over the course of a season while only losing one option. If he is again optioned to the Minors for 20 or more days in the following season, he would lose his second option and can once again be optioned to the Minors and recalled any number of times that year. The same is true of a player's third option year.

When a player is out of Minor League options, however, it becomes a trickier matter for his club. Out-of-options players are more likely to make a club out of Spring Training, because that player must first be removed from the 40-man roster and exposed to outright waivers before he can be sent outright to a Minor League affiliate. Knowing that they stand a large risk of losing that player, clubs will sometimes carry an out-of-options player early in the year even if that player was outperformed by someone with remaining Minor League options during Spring Training.
If a player misses an entire option year due to injury or expends his third option year before he has completed five professional seasons (Major Leagues and Minor Leagues included), he can receive a fourth option year.

A player's option years do not need to be used in succession. Any player with fewer than five years of Major League service time and an option year remaining can be optioned to the Minor Leagues. Players with more than five years of service time must consent to being optioned.
Impending rule change that will go into effect at the start of the 2020 season
Beginning in 2020, the minimum number of days a player will need to remain in the Minors after being optioned will increase from 10 to 15, with the same exceptions in play.
Examples

Mets shortstop Wilmer Flores entered the 2015 season out of options, having been added to the 40-man roster in November 2011. Flores was optioned to the Minor Leagues for the entire 2012 season and spent significant chunks of the 2013 and 2014 seasons in the Minors as well.

Then-Padres outfielder Rymer Liriano missed the entire 2013 season -- an option year -- due to Tommy John surgery and was rewarded with a fourth option year as a result.

It will be remedied before the next rule 5 draft, and that's all that matters.

The club currently has 38 players rostered on the 40 man. So yes they can add Alvarez. But, and this is a big but, being listed on the 40 man means a major league contract and that means you start the option cycle.

These seem to be the options to bring up for the Mexico series:

Derek Fisher .296 6 HR 14 RBI
Myles Straw .309 1 HR 10 RBI 7 SB
Kyle Tucker .167 5 HR 9 RBI

I'm guessing they bring up Straw, but what do I know.

It's possible but I'm guessing with Friday being an off-day, they won't think they need to add a 3rd catcher. At worst Straw gives them an extra speed guy for pinch running and plus defender.

Can Yordan catch?

Never took the bat off his shoulder. First 2 strikes were 87-88 off speed pitches right down the middle.

But you know what's not outdated? OPS of .319... worthless. (Actually worth negative)
