Or they just say they took an absurd amount of money to help future players so that they don't seem as greedy. I mean, seriously, $33M per year to play a game? I think a lot of players have lost touch with reality.
As player salaries continue to rise, they are going to start pricing families out of attending games. But let's not worry about where that money is coming from. Let's focus on getting more money per game than the majority of households in this country bring in per year.
So someone like Mike Trout should say "Mr. Moreno, I see in your newest deal you are making $100mm more per year just on the local TV contract, but this is just a game so I will take less money and let you keep all of that."
Talk about lost touch with reality.
No. In Trout's case, he should tell Mr. Moreno that he'll gladly play this game for a measly $20M per year so that the extra can be used to help improve the talent on the team. But that's not possible as part of the MLBPA. Players are pretty much forced to squeeze every dime they can out of teams. And it's all to help future players earn more, right?. Because $35M per year apparently isn't enough.
And the owners definitely aren't innocent. There's always one schmuck that dishes out the salary and resets the ceiling. They are as much to blame as the players if not more.
But to the original point, don't go around beating your chest because your gaudy salary will help future players earn even more. Just be thankful that you get to earn what you do playing a game and maybe even thank the fans for making it possible. Maybe JV did. I'm just going on the quote that was posted.
