With the majors so close, it amazes me that guys like him can't do a little more to get in better shape. Baseball is their job. It's not like he's working 8-10 hours a day and can't find the time to hit the gym. I mean, what else does he have to do in the offseason?
And Tyler White played 2b/ss/3b in AAA. Too bad he's looking like peak Kirby Puckett right now or he could be an indispensable Marwin type instead of being relegated to DH.

I agree with y'alls take. If my job is to try and make the league then you better believe my diet, training, and mind set is going to be on point.

Tyler White played those spots in AAA because it's AAA and it doesn't matter. White has never had a potential spot at anywhere other than 1B or DH.

I played in a golf tournament with Tyler at the end of January and I guarantee he is tipping the scale around 250 or more. And most of it isn't muscle.

The same build as Tony E. Of course if Tyler White is raking and hitting the ball I DGAF what kind of shape he is in.

Dumb take. He has 3 starts at 3b in his 5 spring training games so far, more than any other player.

You don't give a guy significant playing time at so many positions at the last stop before the majors or in spring training "just because". No one is saying he projects as a starting major league SS, but the organization obviously thought he had the potential be a utility infielder at the major league level. They obviously still believe he can play 3b.

He had a start at 2b his rookie year and a start in LF in 2017 but he has gained significant weight since then. Even last season he played more AAA games at 2b than any other position. Part of the issue is we were extremely well covered at 2b/ss/3b with the starters + Marwin and then Yuli being able to slide over.

Maybe it's a Gattis type situation where he's no Johnny Bench but is serviceable when needed, but to say he has no potential when they've already tried him out at other positions at the MLB level is ignorant.

At least Tyler shows flashes and shows the ability to get around on ML pitching.

AJ Reed may just be a AAAA player regardless of his weight, but every time we've seen him in the bigs he's so out of shape and incredibly slow. I feel like every Reed AB I find myself screaming at the TV 'START YOUR SWING NOW!!!!!'

Looks so over matched it's not even funny, but heads down to AAA and mashes 30+ HRs and 100+ RBIs

Didn't Tyler lose weight and he was worse than he was previously?

I remember the Yankees were worried about CC Sabathia's weight. He lost a bunch and wasn't very good. Gained it back and he pitched well again.

Not nearly the same situation, but it's something to keep in mind.

Carrying weight as a pitcher verses carrying lots of weight as a position player are 2 different animals.

Not very comparable imo. You can find outliers like Cecil and prince but it's not common where those guys have sustained healthy long careers

And here's a snippet I haven't seen mentioned

Quote:

6. Houston Astros

Astros' Top 30 Prospects

Top 100: 6 Forrest Whitley, RHP (7); Kyle Tucker, OF (8); Yordan Alvarez, OF (44); Josh James, RHP (62); Corbin Martin, RHP (81); J.B. Bukauskas, RHP (97)

Prospect Points (MLB Rank): 307 (5)

The Astros are doing a better job of simultaneously succeeding in the big leagues and player development than any organization. Not only have they made the playoffs in three of the last four years while winning the 2017 World Series, but they also have six Top 100 Prospects in their system and depth beyond those big names. Whitley is the best pitching prospect in baseball and Tucker ranks among the elite offensive prospects in the game. Both should be ready to help Houston at some point in 2019, and the same is true of their other Top 100 guys: Alvarez, James, Martin and Bukauskas. The Astros also have plenty of intriguing youngsters at the lower levels, most notably shortstop Freudis Nova and right-hander Bryan Abreu.

Saw that yesterday. Good info.

I am loving the At Bat app since I downloaded it last week. Lots of great Astros-related stuff that I don't have to go searching for every day.

Love reading this and it shows the Astros are smart with how/when they trade in addition to picking up talent in the draft.

We seem to have several of these AAAA types. Fisher, Stassi, Reed... even Davis until recently. Might even add White in there on balance, although he showed some legitimate flash at times as you mentioned. Will be interesting to see what Reed does because he is still fairly young. Never know who the next JD Martinez might be. Plus, when you look at it, those guys aren't much different than any other 24th and 25th roster spot major leaguers. They are definitely cheaper to keep around. Will also be a big year for Fisher- hopefully he is back to full health and can finally stick.

Marisnick, Kemp, Tucker, Fisher... decisions, decisions. If not at the end of the month, certainly this year sometime.

Marisnick may be my favorite Astro that rarely produces. He just a tremendous CF, that if he could be an average hitter, that he would make Reddick expendable in a trade. I also hope there is a way they can keep Kemp around.

They said on the radio broadcast he looks completely different so far this Spring.

Also said not only was it hard for him swing the bat late last year, but it took everything for him to get out of bed. Apparently was in pretty bad pain.

He was WAY worse than the team let on. Surprise...I know

I see that Corbin got in the game yesterday. One earned run in 2.2 innings. With James being out for a while with the quad injury, does he have a decent chance of making the opening day roster?

No. Hinch already said he, Whitley, and some of the other prospects will not break camp with the club because they aren't ready.

JV got hit hard that 1st inning. HR, deep fly ball almost to the fence in center and a line drive single.

Recovered and pitched great. Retired the last 7 in a row. Continues to be troubled by the early longball.

Sparky just mentioned that Reed brought his own bowling ball to spring training and bowled a 255 the other day.

1. He's a hell of a coordination/repetition athlete, give him a shot to pitch in the minors. Maybe he can be the next Brooks Keischnick instead of chubby Crash Davis

2. Bringing his own rock to spring training isn't exactly helping dispel the beer & nachos image.

Just a heads up for the T-Mobile crowd, free MLB TV subscription day is March 26th. Maybe if you have another carrier you can find someone who has it and "borrow" their sub

I may be double-subscribed. There's a small chance I can help you out.
