Doesn't make a lick of sense to go after Encarnancion when they could have just signed Cruz to a 1 year 15M deal...they are very similar players.

EE is going to require trading prospects and paying him 20M and a 5M opt out the following year...

I'd still go after EE at this point since he's the next best thing after Cruz, but it boggles the mind why they passed on him.

I don't think that was the case. They made a competitive offer

I honestly think this was Cruz wanting to play in MIN. Why? I have no clue but there were multiple reports that the Astros were right in it and made a competitive offer.

Dodgers have had Max Muncy and Bellinger come out of nowhere the last two years, we haven't had anything close to that

I agree. This is not a video game where just because you offer $1 more than other teams that the player will sign. It sounds like Cruz was not a result of the Astros passing on him, but Cruz choosing the Twins.

I joked about 3 weeks ago that the Yankees had 284 roster spots with all of the signings/trades they had made. But, seriously, they'll have to pare down their roster significantly before the season starts. Is there anyone that they might jettison that could be helpful to the Astros in 2019?

I guess it's possible but I don't know why a free agent on the back end of his career would want to sign with a mediocre team instead of a contender.

I think we had our number (10 or 12M) and we weren't willing to go over that for whatever reason. Money and then winning matters more than anything.

Should note that the Yankees have the Marlins organization as part of their talent pool to choose from. Jeter makes them look real good in those trades.

Mazag started the 17 thread and I think most of us were smart enough to yield to him in 18.

Jury is out on whether we stick with him because he won it for us in 17 or switch it up since he didn't get the job done last year.
