regarding Reddick...he's on the books for 2 more years...2019 & 2020...at $13 MM per.

Astros would probably have to eat some of his salary in a trade
Yep. He's a negative value player at $13mm.

Which is why I think Stassi/Chirinos will do just fine IF we sign Cruz.

If not I think the need for Realmuto is ratcheted up a bit.

keep in mind though Chirnos is on back end of career, Realmuto is not

In my opinion, if you are a catcher, you are always on the back end of your career

I bet realmuto hits .250 this year

People need to accept that there are no Mike Piazzas playing catcher, not even one

No disrespect to Posey, he might be the best catcher of this generation(or Mauer). But they weren't on the same level as Piazza offensively.

No ***** Jason Castro was better behind the dish than Piazza.

Posey is also not roiding.

As an overall player and relative to other catchers of his era, Posey is better.

Angels signed Matt Harvey 1yr/$11MM. Angels must be desperate.

Matt Harvey signed with the Angels. I can't wait for Bregman & co. to barrel about 20 consecutive pitches against his washed up David Schwimmer-looking ass.

Really hope they don't give up much if they land Realmuto...honestly I think he's overvalued, and im fine with Chirinos.

Would much rather we land a legit DH slugger like Cruz that hits 35-40 HRs and keep our prospects...if we do give up prospects it should be for a starter

My guess is "moving at a snails pace" indicates that Tucker or Whitley aren't involved, or else Miami would have accepted already.

Agreed. The deal probably would have been done last winter if we were willing to include Whituckerly.

Personally I don't want us to trade Tucker or Whitley for Realmuto. I don't want this to be a 5-6 year window. I want it us to be a power house for years to come and trading our future away won't let us do that. Just got to keep reloading and signing solid role players for cheap. Like the front office has been doing.

trading away 1 top draft pic will not jeopardize your future for years to come IMO. It will cause a little bump in the road, but if it results in acquiring a solid MLB player who contributes to the team it could be a positive. Key word "could". Not saying I will agree with any trade, but many on this board seems to think the only way to have a good team year in and year out is to hoard every prospect we have. Sometimes you have to give a little, to get a little.

The goal is to win championships with the ASTROS, not the MiLB clubs.

I'm not sure what I would do. It feels like rolling the dice. Realmuto is the safer choice because you already know what his ability is. But my fear is we make the trade and Tucker becomes JD Martinez.
TonySoprano
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm not saying we hoard every prospect. But I think we should hoard the guys like Whitley and Tucker. If they take like our 4th or 5th best prospect and some other promising guys I'd be okay with that, but not our Top 2.

Eh...

Not if you're losing Smith to injury, Sipp to FA, moving McHugh and Peacock and possibly one of James/Perez/Framber to the rotation.

We may be seeing Whitley right off the bat and/or making an addition of a starter so as to avoid moving guys form the pen to rotation.

I find it very unlikely we have McHugh, Peacock, and James all in the rotation.

We still have a ton of arms. Devo, Osuna, Pressly, Rodon, Harris, Perez, and at least 1 of McHugh/Peacock/James. Then you could slot Framber too. That's 8 plus 5 rotation and we're carrying 13 pitchers which is a ton.

Quote:

Jeff Luhnow on Joe Smith: "From everything I've heard from the doctors, he'll be fully recovered and he will be able to participate in games in the second half of the season and certainly be 100 percent in time for any postseason activity."

Jeff Luhnow does not think Joe Smith's injury "suddenly sends us into the reliever market where we weren't there before."

How the Astros will compensate for Smith's loss is largely contingent upon how they fill their rotation.
Quote:

Astros prez/GM Jeff Luhnow said they'll look internally to fill Joe Smith's role in the 'pen. "Losing Joe is a blow, but I don't think it requires us to go out and get another late inning reliever. We're going to have enough good arms in the bullpen to do what we need to do."

Luhnow pointed to several pitchers who are candidates for starting roles but also pitch out of the 'pen as candidates to fill relief roles -- Valdez, Perez, James, Rogelio Armenteros, etc. "We have a lot of guys that factor into that mix."

Luhnow is on the lookout for pitching, as previously reported, but he is more focused on starting pitching than relief. I wouldn't expect them to be players in the sweepstakes for Andrew Miller, Craig Kimbrel, Adam Ottavino, etc.
