I think that would've been a fair return for a rental.

Looking back. I really wish that deal had gone through. Even though I like Bukauskus a lot.

Agreed. I think it would have given us a little jolt (similar to acquiring JV last year) and having one more big bat would have done wonders for deepening our lineup.

That seems pricey for a rental. Based on seeing what happened with Boston, I don't think it would have been enough unless he goes on a Beltran 04 type run.

I would like our chances in a rematch best of 7 easily, we were already the favorite

#Astros on list of teams talking to #Mariners about a trade for LHP James Paxton, sources say. Market described as "active," including HOU, NYY and a wide variety of other clubs. Paxton in his career against HOU: 2.89 ERA in 71 2/3 innings, .605 opponents' OPS.

Would love to make this happen so we don't have to face him 5 times a year anymore

And he's gonna end up walking for nothing anyways.

Stupid of the Nats to not deal him. Writing was on the wall for awhile he wouldn't be staying in WAS.

It really blows my mind how stupid some franchises are.

But if he doesn't face us then he won't be nearly as good.

The Harper deal would have been interesting, he turned down a $300MM extension from the nats so he could very well be out of town for nothing but a comp pick.

Luhnow has his work cut out this offseason. I'd like to keep Dallas for the right price but I think that since he's a lefty he's going to get a bigger offer elsewhere. This team could look a lot different next season, exciting, and scary as the same time. We're going to get a pretty clear picture of what Luhnow and Crane want to do based on what they're willing to give up in money and prospects. I hope we don't overspend unless it makes too much sense and an opportunity presents itself.

so is the general thought...the Astros are going to let Morton go?

the front office believes they have gotten the best from him (and the best value)

I think they expected he would have accepted the QO and don't think he's worth that much.

My thought is they'll try and work out nice incentive laden contract that's fair for both sides. Just seems like too perfect a match to let him walk.

How much does he have left? With the Astros being a star heavy team they know his effectiveness wears after the first two times through the line up. I don't know if I would want to pencil in my number 3 as a 6 innings max guy. With Colin likely going to the rotation, the bullpen will just see more strain during they year and the potential for wearing down increases. Now who takes his place and is more than a 6 inning guy..that is a good question.

If they expected that then why didn't they offer it?
Ag_07

Because they don't wanna get stuck paying him $17.9M when he accepts the QO.

It's Colby Rasmus situation. Offer a guy the QO who you don't think is worth it then he ends up accepting it and now you're overpaying him.

Agreed. Probably the site I check second most.

My guess is:

1. TexAgs
2. Mlbtraderumors
3. Facebook.

5 pitchers the Astros could potentially improve upon:

1. Sonny Gray
2. Trevor Cahill
3. Garrett Richards
4. Drew Pomeranz
5. Jeremy Hellickson
Interesting list. I don't know if I'd rush for any of them, except for Richards. The upside is mad real, but I worry about his arm health. His velocity this year was his highest on every pitch, however (except his four seamer). Done right, this could be a Charlie Morton-type move.

lol oh Tommy John.

Still, a strong backloaded 3 year deal makes sense. maybe 3 years at 24 or so? 3/10/11 or so.

My dream scenario... sign Patrick Corbin, Nelson Cruz, Jed Lowry and Wilson Ramos. Go after Cody Allen and Andrew Miller and see if we can turn them around. Then win the whole damned thing.
lol Jed Lowrie is coming back like I'm getting back with my ex. Not a chance in any religion's hell.

I would put my money on Sonny Gray returning to form with Strom than Garrett Richards staying healthy.

Why is that LOL?

Clearly, Jeff sees something he's liked about him since the draft. We have holes to fill. He's still a solid bat and would come pretty cheaply with his age.

I could get Sonny to return to form. Just don't start him in NY. Simple.

Richards has been spinning it for years and years. He seems like the ideal target for us.

Didn't he go pretty scorched earth last time we traded him? Quite displeased with how he was treated IIRC.

Jed was pretty salty when we dealt him this last time to OAK. IIRC he was outspoken against the trade and was not happy with the organization.

I can't see him openly choosing to return here.

Because Jed has signed twice and been traded twice. He's not going to run up to that football and kick it again.

If we offer him the most money, why would he turn it down? Because there is a chance he could be traded? Get a no-trade clause or negotiate more money by not having one. He's only made <39 M in his 11 season career in the bigs.

For a guy with back to back 4+ WAR seasons, I'd say he's affordable and someone we'd target because there is value.
