I easily see JV re-signing with the Astros when that time comes around. He has all the money one would ever want and is fixing to have a new baby. The dude is strictly playing for history now and I feel like the Astros as a whole give him the best shot to win games for the next 7 years or so. He's the kinda dude who will take a pay cut for you if that means signing another big time FA.

I've tried to tune in to game 7 NLCS a couple of times, it just makes me sad and I end up going back to CFB.

My vote on offseason signings. Ramos at catcher, Abreu at first. What do y'all think about bringing back JA Happ? Or is he too expensive?

On the note of 1st base I think we make a real play for the hometown Goldschmidt

Would be a huge coup. Put Yuli at full time DH, with Goldy at 1B? Awesome

1) load up on arms. Assuming we lose Keuchel, Morton, or both... get out there and get a few dudes and hope to catch lightning in a bottle. A combo of JV, Cole, Lance(?)/McHugh/james/Whitley/a couple jags will be just fine

2) sign marwin. Don't care how much he is, we need him. He had only a decent regular season, but look at what he did in the playoffs? He was arguably our best hitter and played gold glove level defense at 2b when Altuve went out. We need marwin.

3) get a "big" name bat. Yeah I know that's easier said than done, but the possibilities are endless. I'm not talking trout/Harper/goldschmidt big, but I'd really like to have another power hitter on the team.

4) catcher. I don't k ow the answer here, but it's not on the roster. Outside of 2016, catcher has always been an offensive black hole on the Astros (and yeah, I know, most teams). I would have been okay bringing back Maldonado as an option until he forgot how to catch the ball in the playoffs. Stassi isn't the answer, McCann isn't the answer.

Astros are still the world champions through at least Saturday and longer without a sweep.

why is everyone running with that Lance news as fact???

highly unlikely that is true. he would not have been pitching like that with a torn UCL.

also, as much as I hate him, I will wait on McTaggert to comment.

After next year when it is time to do so. I don't think we're going to get anything done early like we've seen with Altuve.

Ok. I'm in the offseason thread now.

For what its worth, I think they better try and keep this group together:
1. Find a real DH.
2. Find a long term solution at C. They need to hit and also throw out batters like Machete. It would help if they actually could catch the ball.
3. Find a LFer. I would prefer to keep Marwin as Jack of all trades and have a full time LFer. That also means I sign Marwin for 3 years. I guess Tucker is on the clock. He needs to get every opportunity in real game situations. Thats 100-150 ABs straight before you even think about evaluating him.
4. I give Keucherl a really nice 3 year offer. He wont take it but I try. maybe 4 years. Not 6 unless the last 2 years are options and cheap ones at that.
5. I give CFM a super nice 1 year QO. He earned it. I might go 2 years.

Off season talk sucks. And so does Joe West.

OUTFIELD
Reddick has 2 years left on his deal (0)
Springer has 2 more years of ARB (0)
Gonzalez is an UFA (-5,125,000)
Marisnick has 2 more years of ARB (small raise coming)
Fisher has another 5 years of team control (tiny raise coming)
Kemp has another 4 years of team control (tiny raise for Kemp too)
Tucker & Straw - a **** ton of time left (I need to refresh myself in service time rules)

Top Free Agents: Bryce Harper (26), Michael Brantley (32), Marwin Gonzalez (30), Andrew McCutchen (32), Adam Jones (33), Nick Markakis (35), AJ Pollock (31), Carlos Gonzalez (33), Jose Bautista (38), Brett Gardner (35), Carlos Gomez (33), Cameron Maybin (32), Melky Cabrera (34), Hunter Pence (36). A handful of decent names but mostly a bunch of past their prime types. Outside of Harper no one really jumps out. McCutchen & Brantley don't bring much more than Marwin does at the plate, but will likely cost more than Mawrin.

On the Farm: The top guys are already listed above because they played roles on the big league club this year.

I'm not sure you call OF a need per se because between Reddick, Springer, and Kemp you have a nice OF squad and Jake is an adequate 4th outfielder. Of course, its year two of hoping Tucker becomes the guy everyone projects he can be. I'd like to have Marwin back, but I think our money is better spent on a higher end bat or in the starting rotation.

DESIGNATED HITTER
Gattis is an UFA (-6,700,000)
White has a year of team control followed by 3 years of ARB (small increase)

Top Free Agents: Victor Martinez (40), Nelson Cruz (38), Evan Gattis (32)

On the Farm: N/A (everyone has some kind of position)

I don't think we'll see Gattis back and I don't think White is the answer. Evan played his way out of the lineup and White sort of did too in the playoffs. I think White is going to have a difficult time making the roster next year, but we can appreciate how the great white shined some when he was needed this past year. This is the position I think we can improve on most to make the largest impact in 2019. I want to spend smartly(not too long) on someone good. My top 3 targets would be 1a Josh Donaldson (33), 1b Jed Lowrie (35), 3 Nelson Cruz (38). I would also be on the lookout for potential trade options (throwing it out there to see if anything sticks) in maybe Edwin Encarnacion, Jose Abreu, & Eric Hosmer.

Donaldson has been an elite player for the past 5-6 years. He was out a lot of last years and showed he still had something left in the tank in Cleveland (.920 OPS in 16 games). He's plenty good enough to spell Bregman at 3rd so he can rest or allow Bregman to move to SS when Correa needs rest.

Jed is showing no signs of slowing down with age. Jeff has always had some infatuation with him since he passed on him with the Cards over a decade ago. I would think Jed would come more cheaply with his age, but can still play a solid 2B & 3B if needed.

Cruz is someone you would expect to get in the short term since he's 38. Think what we gave to Beltran, but Cruz has been more consistent at an older age. The red flags are there (juice?), but its worth the risk.

If Marwin resigns (and even if he doesn't) you could see Kemp and/or Tucker getting some time at DH as well if we don't bring someone in. I think this is a mistake, but we will have to wait and see what the club has in mind.

after seeing that list its hard to imagine a case were we dont sign marwin. There is not much out there. If he wants 3-4 years at 12 per I say do it. Marwin can play so many different positions. But trust in lunhow.
