I think James is our future closer.

I haven't considered that too much, but I guess I could see it.

In general, I want any potential front-line starter to get their shot there first. 200 IP > 50 IP.

Understood. He's not the closer of the present - more of something to consider down the road.

has anyone reputable said that about mccullers?

His wife's post with 18monthcountdown seems to be pretty obvious but maybe something else is happening in 18 months?

Don't think this changes our offer to Keuchel. Not sure anyone was relying on LMJ to be a mainstay in next year's rotation. It's a coin flip on him regardless.

Replacing 60% of the rotation ain't no joke. We have guys to who can fill in for 1 to 2 spots if things go well, but 3? I highly doubt it without taking a huge step back. We'll need another option or need to not replace 3/5 of the rotation.

Is there any particular reason you're assuming Morton won't be back? To me, he seems like the perfect fit for Houston's long term plans because it doesn't appear that he's looking for a long term deal. He's been mentioned as a candidate that could just accept the QO and pitch on a one year deal. It sounds like he wants to take it year by year based on his health situation.
Because he's a UFA. I wouldn't assume anyone back.

He's going to get a qualifying offer, so I also wouldn't assume he's gone...

JT Realmuto is going to be the guy the Astros go after hard this offseason. If they land him and bring back Morton and Valdez/Whitley fills the hole that Keuchel leaves (don't think he's coming back) this is going to be another 100 win team.

I imagine we see Peacock make a return to the starting rotation. He seems to do better as a starter than as a reliever in the long run.

So we lose a former Cy Young winner and Peacock is our saving grace.

I sure hope not

Dallas Keuchel is not the same as Cy Keuchel of 2015. He's a nice pitcher, but can be replaced now. He's not going to be worth the money he wants, that's the problem. If he would stay on the cheap, bring him back. If not, let him go.

He can be replaced, but you'll have to find a top 10-15 workhorse pitcher to fully replace him. You know many of those laying around?

Wade Miley, JA Happ, Lance Lynn. Re-signing Charlie Morton would be something I think the Astros need to do as well.

It takes Wide Miley 3 years to pitch as many innings as Keuchel does in 2. Same with Happ except he's 35 and clearly not going to getting better moving forward. Oh and same with Lynn. His 0.9 WAR really gives you confidence.

These are all fine options to help in the short term for less money, but you're getting lesser players (not bad players). And that is okay, but don't kid yourself and think these guys are as good as Dallas.

The issue with the whole situation is what Dallas is going to cost. If he commands a high dollar price tag, I think Luhnow tries to get a guy for a short term on the cheap while bringing McHugh back from the pen and see how Valdez, James and Whitley perform.

I agree. I am anti paying 30+ year old pitchers 100+M deals for 5+ years.

We can make moves to keep a strong rotation (not 2018 strong), but we need to spend to improve the line up (C & DH) if we're downgrading the rotation.

Dodgers are going for back to back right? I turned off the 2017 World Series when Kershaw was handed a four run lead in game 5. No way he blew that.

For some reason all of the RedSox pitchers have shiny forearms. They need to work a deal with Old Spice or something to get them a better soap.

Didn't watch, checked the score this morning...holy hell, they decided to play 2 last night.

I crashed on the couch and couldn't make it until the end. Red Sox had their chances to go up 3-0, but the Dodgers just kept fighting back. Was a crazy game. Muncy almost hit a walk-off homerun to end it in an earlier inning, too (maybe the 14th or 15th). It was foul by about 1 or 2 feet. Crazy that he came back and hit one that counted later.

I know how stressful our games were last year. I can't imagine an 18 inning WS game. At least it was a Friday night, but a 3:30 ending time for those in Boston. Brutal.
