TEXAS RANGERS AND NASHVILLE SOUNDS ENTER INTO
FOUR-YEAR PLAYER DEVELOPMENT CONTRACT
Official announcement to be made on Thursday in Nashville

Arlington, Texas The Texas Rangers and Triple-A Nashville Sounds of the Pacific Coast League today announced that the organizations have entered into a four-year Player Development Contract extending through the 2022 season.

A formal announcement of the agreement will be made at a press conference at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday at First Tennessee Park in Nashville. Rangers and Sounds ownership and management will be participating in the press conference.

"The Texas Rangers are very pleased to enter into this four-year player development contract with the Nashville Sounds," said Texas Rangers Co-Chairman and Managing Partner Ray Davis. "Led by Frank Ward and Adam Nuse, the Sounds are one of Minor League Baseball's top organizations.

"The Sounds have received incredible fan support as the franchise finished fourth in Minor League Baseball in overall attendance with over 600,000 fans attending games at beautiful First Tennessee Park in downtown Nashville in 2018. For a number of reasons, this became a very attractive location for our Triple-A club and we look forward to a productive relationship with the Sounds."

"The Nashville Sounds front office has a great reputation of taking care of its players, and we believe this is a tremendous opportunity," said Texas Rangers President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Jon Daniels. "I think our players and development staff will enjoy playing and working in an environment with first-class facilities and an exciting game atmosphere."

The Sounds become just the third Rangers' Triple-A affiliate in the last 37 years. Texas was affiliated with Oklahoma City from 1983-2010 and completed an eight-year affiliation with Round Rock in 2018. The Sounds, who were affiliated with Oakland from 2015-18, play at First Tennessee Park, which opened in 2015.

So the Nats are going to be shuttling their Triple-A guys out to Fresno?! And the Astros thought they had it bad with that affiliation. Yikes.

All in for Nashville. Might be some cool new hats next year and definitely boosts the reasons to visit Nashville in the future. Such a great city.

Can I just say, and this may be sacrilegious, but I wish we could just scrub Nolan Ryan from everything to do with the Rangers. Get rid of his statue, his street and anything else with his name on it. F*** Nolan Ryan.

San Antonio is still available, I think anyway. But SA hasn't been willing to upgrade their park, which is why the Rangers wound up in Nashville.

Norm and Donnie talking Bannister's future right now. Basically saying he's not going anywhere as the intention appears to be building for 2020 and Banny will probably extended through that season.

While I agree that Banny had nothing to work with this season, his management decision baffle me. I also think Brocail needs to be gone yesterday. It will be interesting to see what we do during this offseason and how we come out of the gate in 2019.

Mendez had several good starts in a row, but just looking at his statline today didn't go well:

Yeah, that'll be some long flights out to the west coast. At least Nashville is a big enough airport to offer pretty frequent flights.

Seems like most of these AAA teams end up largely playing their own division and the one next to it (PCL has 4 divisions). Which in Nashville's case will be Memphis, NO, and Round Rock in theirs, and the next closestis Omaha, OKC, Colo Springs, and Iowa. Nashville didn't play any of the west coast teams this season.

Ah, ok. That sounds better. I just saw PCL and assumed lots of games on the west coast. I don't really follow the matchups, just see how the Ranger teams/prospects are doing via the daily emails and other updates.

Yeah, it's kind of screwy that the Pacific Coast League has 4 teams on the Pacific Coast, while the other dozen or so stretch to Iowa, Nashville, Memphis, etc.

And to be more accurate on my post above, they didn't travel to any of the 4 west coast teams this year (1 division with 4 teams), but it looks like most of those teams did visit Nashville for 1 series each. So maybe they'll make the rare trip out west, but I wouldn't expect much at all.

Quote:

Texas Rangers rumors: Jeff Banister and whether he will be the Texas Rangers manager is a topic in Evan Grant's latest "Evan Help Us" piece, and while there are a variety of other questions in there, this one is, to me, the most compelling. Evan says "the chances are better than 50-50" that the Rangers let Jeff Banister go after the 2018 season and look for a new manager.
The question about the future of Banister has sort of hung over this team all season, with Banister's contract running only through 2019, and reports indicating that general manager Jon Daniels had a sit down with Banister about his handling of the clubhouse after last season. I don't think that Jeff Banister is the reason the Rangers are in last place, and I doubt the front office thinks that, either. If a change is made, I suspect it is because of the things that we don't see that go on behind the scenes a belief that the Rangers need a different voice to handle a club that is much younger, and much different, than the group that Banister was originally given in 2015.
The finalists the last time around were Banister, Tim Bogar and Kevin Cash. Bogar is not managing, but Cash has gotten great reviews for his work with the Tampa Bay Rays, and Alex Cora, another former player who Daniels interviewed for the managerial job after the 2014 season, is at the helm of a Boston Red Sox team that is having a historic season. One has to wonder if JD is regretting passing on hiring one of those two guys, or if, had Cash or Cora been brought in here, the situation in Texas would be the same as it is now.
I don't think Banister is a bad manager. The Rangers won a couple of division titles under him, and the complaints he gets as far as his in-game decision-making are the same sort of complaints that are leveled against most managers. And I tend to think that so much of what a manager does, so much of what is important about their job, is the behind-the-scenes stuff, the handling of personalities and the clubhouse, that I am reluctant to opine about whether a particular manager needs to stay or go.
But if the Rangers do make a change, then, as Evan suggests in his piece, they will probably look for someone who is similar to Cash, Cora, or Phillies manager Gabe Kapler former players who are relatively young and have an analytical bent, who are able to relate to and command respect from current players while also being open to analytics and embracing the changes in the way the game is being played nowadays

Yeah I don't think I'd be too upset if we had a brand new staff after this season. I can take or leave banister but I think for the most part he's stubborn and not super progressive in terms of analytics and stuff like that. That seems to be the way the MLB is trending

Obviously, this is a very different team than the one that existed at the end of 2014. Seems like an appropriate time to revisit the entire staff and decide if this is who you want to carry forward your rebuild. Banny does seem like one of those "i got your back and believe in you" tough guy veteran managers vs. the developmental, analytical type that they may need now. And Brocail is worthless. He has to go no matter what.

Take it for what's it's worth but I just heard Banny is as good as gone when the season ends. Supposedly he is a "cancer" to the lockerroom and not very well liked by the players.

Interesting that he didn't even get to finish the season.

I'm totally fine with having a brand new coaching staff. Don't think I'll miss Doug Brocail whatsoever. Maybe a change gives the team a little bit of a shot in the arm.
