He's a RP. I would doubt they bring him up since he just made it to AA mid-season. But I guess anything's possible. Somebody will have to pitch in these games.

He will be 25 in September, any chance he gets a start or two this season, or will it be 2019 before seeing him in Arlington?

I would think that late in the season 2019 is the earliest we may see him. He still has to prove himself at the Double A level.

For him to stay in A ball so long he must have some issues with his mechanics. Maybe he can be a middle innings guy in the future.

He was pretty shaky the first 2 years in A ball which stunted his timing, but the guy has been rockin since the beginning of 2017, so they found something.

Just imagine what Doug Brocail's tutelage could do for him.

Only 23 men on the active roster right now. I'm guessing the team flew a couple of relievers to Arizona in case they needed to be activated tonight.

Scouting report from http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2018?list=ari
Quote:

Scouting grades: Fastball: 60 | Curveball: 55 | Changeup: 50| Control: 50 | Overall: 45

It hasn't exactly been the development path the D-backs envisioned when they gave him $450,000 to sign out of Taiwan back in July 2014, but Huang may have found the right role in a bounce-back 2017 season. The slender right-hander had been a Futures Game participant in 2015, but injuries and a lack of strength necessitated a move to the bullpen, and he was able to dominate two levels of A ball in 2017 pitching in shorter stints.

The D-backs had hoped Huang would be able to add strength because he had a three-pitch mix that could work as a starter. But starting with a back injury that hampered him early and followed later by other minor nicks, combined with his relative inability to add strength, the move to the bullpen was necessary. The good news is his stuff really spiked in the role. His fastball sat in the mid-90s and his curve was filthy at times, with straight downer action. He has a good changeup, but didn't throw it as much in this role, with his fastball-curveball combination more than good enough.

The D-backs didn't want to limit Huang to just one inning at a time, using almost a modified piggyback system to get him multiple innings every time out. They'd like to keep that ability to go more than one frame as long as they can as Huang hits the upper levels of the system.

So he just goes to the other locker room today? I suppose it's better than changing uniforms in-game...

There was a player 15 to 20 years ago that got traded during a game, to the team they were playing. IIRC, he went into the tunnel and changes uniforms and dugouts.
If he plays for Texas gets traded during the game, can he still play for Arizona? Could he pitch the bottom half of the inning for Texas, then the top half for Arizona? You know, like "all time QB?"

Based on the quick search... It appears it was Ricardo Rincon who was a RP for Cleveland, and got traded to Oakland.

Apparently it was in the movie MoneyBall, for which I have not seen.

I wanna say there's rules against that now - or at least the CBA gives the player two days to report to the new team or something like that.

I believe as mentioned, when the lineup cards are submitted, that is the list of available players for the game. Once the game begins, the roster was already set.

It doesn't prevent a player from leaving a game/team, nor would it prevent the player from joining the team, but would prevent them from joining the team and entering the game.

Regarding dugout rules, I'm not sure how that works about who can and cannot be in the dugout.

In all seriousness, really like Diekman. Seems like a good dude. And it was admirable how he bounced back from all the medical shenanigans he experienced last year. He will be missed in the clubhouse.

Watched the pregame show a bit ago... Diekman literally had tears in his eyes as Emily Jones interviewed him. Expressed his thanks to the team, organization and fans for the support during his medical issues. Good dude.

Yeah, caught that in the pregame. Always came off to me as a very impressive guy, and seeing him express his thoughts that way falls right in line with that. Wish him the best.

Even if he does have a ****ed up stride.

Keone's exit interview last night was pretty heart-felt, as well. You could tell he understood the business side of things, but also was very gracious to the fans and Rangers.

Have mentioned this before (I think on the season thread last year), but I met Diekman and his then fiance on my flight from DFW to Chicago a year ago (in coach no less), and I just said to him "hurry back". Later he stopped me and told me he was on his way to Minneapolis for his final surgery, and we chatted a bit.

Super nice guy... like I said, he went out of his way to talk to me. Definitely a big fan of him and wish him luck.

For those not watching, JD says that they asked Adrian a month or so how he wanted them to handle it, ie did he want then to bring all of the trade possibilities to him, his agent, etc. He said bring them to him and that's what they did. He had his list of where he was willing to go, but he was selective and also did not want to just be given away. Buyers had lots of IF trade options (buyers market), and it just never matched up. So it seems like they really worked together to find something that would work, but the interest of the right teams just wasnt there.

That said, I still wouldnt be surprised to see him end up a waiver wire deal. But it may take an injury with one of the clubs he's interested in

Here is what I've compiled, as we look to 2019.

The Haul:
9 Prospects (3PTBNL) + 2 MLB pitchers.

The Transactions:
Keone Kela: Taylor Hearn (SP) + PTBNL
Jake Diekman: Wei-Chieh Huang + PTBNL
Cole Hamles: Eddie Butler + Rollie Lacy + PTBNL
Jesse Chavez: Tyler Thomas
PTBNL: Austin Jackson (Released) + Jason Bahr + Cory Gearrin

4 Starting Pitchers
Taylor Hearn (23, LHP-SP, AA): 19 GS, 3.12 ERA, 104.0 IP, 107 SO, 1.087 WHIP for Pit AA
Rollie Lacy (23, RHP-SP, A+): 1 GS for DEWDs.
Jason Bahr (23, RHP-SP, A+): 3 GS, 4.73 ERA for DEWDs, so far.
Tyler Thomas (22, LHP-SP, A): 16 GS, 3.14 ERA, 0.964 WHIP, 83.0 IP, 90 SO

3 Relief Pitchers
Cory Gearrin (32, RHP-RP, MLB). 1 year of control. FA 2020
Eddie Butler (27, RHP-RP, MLB): 2 GP for Rangers, 1.1 IP. FA 2023
Wei-Chieh Huang (24, RHP-RP, AA): 29 GP, 2.31 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 58.1 IP, 78 SO

3 PTBNL

The thing is... the added SPs, IMO, are behind many of the guys the Rangers have coming. So, the idea of filling talent in the upper levels does not appear to be the case, unless you think A+ is the upper levels.

What we have coming:
Ariel Jurado (22-RHP-SP, MLB): Currently in the rotation. On 40.

Richelson Pena (24-RHP-SP, AAA): 7 GS, 4.91 ERA in AAA; 11 GS, 2.43 ERA, 66.2 IP, 54 SO, 1.14 in AA.

Wes Benjamin (25-LHP-SP, AA): 10 GS, 3.91 ERA, 53.0 IP, 53 SO, 1.33 WHIP in AA.
Edgar Arredondo (21-RHP-SP, AA): 5 GS, 4.83 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, in AA. 11 GS, 2.88 ERA in A+
Jonathan Hernandez (22-RHP-SP, AA): 8 GS, 7.14 ERA, in AA, 10 GS, 2.20 ERA in A+ (barely 22). On 40.
Yohander Mendez (23-LHP, AA): 3 GS, 6.88 ERA @AA, 5 GS, 3.48 ERA @A+ . On 40.

Joe Palumbo (23-LHP, A+): Recovering from TJ. Has had 3 GS for DEWDs, 4.15 ERA. Add tonight's results, where he went 3.2 IP, 2 ER, 7 R, 4 SO. On 40.

Others on MLB Roster:

Mike Minor (30-LHP): $9.833M for 2019 - 20 GS, 110.1 IP, 4.73 ERA, 1.20 WHIP
Perez (27-LHP): $7.5M/750K for 2019 - 7.08 ERA, 2.20 WHIP
Matt Moore (29-LHP):$10M/750K for 2019 - 20GP, 12 GS, 71.1 IP, 7.70 ERA, 1.92 WHIP
Doug Fister (34-RHP): DL, $4.5M/500K for 2019 - 12 GS, 4.50 ERA
ABD (33-RHP): Serf for 2019 - 6GS, 6.75 ERA, 1.60 WHIP

I would presume Jurado is here to stay, assuming the wheels don't come off. YoMen has to be competing for the rotation in Spring Training. Pena has to be worth considering. He might get some action this year. Hearn has to be worth considering for 2019, assuming he does well the rest of the way at AA. I believe several of the new SPs we got are Rule V guys, so they'll have to be on the 40, at the end of the season.

That would mean, the Rangers are not likely to do anything until after the RuleV draft.

In fact, you can make the argument that the Rangers, with Fister, Minor and Perez, won't make a major FA signing for a SP, in 2019, because of the prospects knocking on the door.

Crouse (19-RHP) having a solid night for Spokane.

5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 SO.

It will be interesting to see if he makes his way to Hickory. I guess not. Especially with all the SP we've added.

Season: 7 GS, 2.45 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, 33.0 IP, 21 H, 41 SO, 9 BB

Not quite 5.0 IP.

I would love to see the Rangers sign a SP. An Ace. I wouldn't even be opposed to the Rangers signing Cole Hamels, if his Option isn't picked up. I also wonder if JD is going to implement a 6-Man rotation. Now would be the time.

Now... let's talk RP. Cause my sleep pattern is off and my time-zones aren't working.

We have:

RHP:
Eddie Butler (27): 10 GP, 19.0 IP, 3.79 ERA, 1.32 WHIP
Cory Gearin (32): 44 GP, 40.0 IP, 4.05 ERA, 1.38 WHIP
Jose Leclerc (24): 41 GP, 39.2 IP, 2.27 ERA, 1.01 WHIP
Chris Martin (32): 28 GP, 25.0 IP, 4.32 ERA, 1.28 WHIP

LHP:
Alex Claudio (26): 43 GP, 45.2 IP, 4.53 ERA, 1.66 WHIP
Jeffrey Springs (25-Rk): Career minors: 112 GP, 3.67 ERA, 1.212 WHIP. MLB debut was Tues.

Others:
Brady Feigl (27, LHP, AAA): Career minors: 119 GP, 2.77 ERA, 1.212 WHIP. Acquired Braves Dec 2016 for Luke Jackson. No MLB experience
Connor Sadzeck (26, RHP, AAA): 2018: 24 GP, 3.90 ERA, 1.333 WHIP. Convert to RP in 2017.
Ricardo Rodriguez (25, RHP, AAA): 2018 (AA+AAA): 23 Gp, 2.08 ERA, 0.846 WHIP.

Based on Diekman's departure (and Rangers' needs), it wouldn't surprise me to see the Rangers re-signing him.

I'd like to see if Leclerc can Close for the remainder of 2018. I believe Alex Claudio has been battling some issues, so maybe he can get it going. Jeffrey Springs had a nice debut last night. Outside of that... we've got a whole bag of nothing.

Something isn't right with him. He had been pretty consistent over the past several years, but his strikeouts are down and his WHIP is up significantly... not a good combo. I know he's been on the DL a couple of times, so that may be part of it.

Saw this on Sadzeck in today's Scott Lucas email. He's just off the DL and apparently getting work in with the Rookie team.

Quote:

Rookie: at Rangers 1,Indians1 4
Record: 3-3-, 1.5 GB, 14-13 overall

SP Connor Sadzeck: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO, 0.00 ERA
SS Jonathan Ornelas: 2-4, .292/.386/.453
CF Ryan Anderson: 2-4, double, .253/.311/.361

Connor Sadzeck made his first appearance in six weeks; he'd been on Round Rock's DL. Sadzeck will be out of options after this season and is looking for his first MLB outing.
