Yep.

Shoulda blown it up a year ago when he and others had more value, but no one ever pulls the trigger until its too late and some of the assets have gone stale.

I'm not sure he would have had much more value last year. His issues aren't contained to this season.

No, but his decline did not begin until late August of last year.

He was 9-1 with a 3.42 ERA on 8/21/17 and an all-star the year before that.

With a playoff pedigree like his and not having yet began to suck, he would have absolutely fetched a big return. It's obviously easier in retrospect to say they should have traded him... but don't pretend he wouldn't have brought in more at this time last year.

Market sucked last year. Probably fetches a fair amount more, but not a huge haul.

Paying $2, or at the most $8, is fine. The Rangers will be big Hamels fans down the stretch hoping he convinces the Cubbies that $20 mill for 2019 is worth it.

A's did pretty good for Sonny Gray. 3 top 100 prospects doesn't suck.

I'm not even talking relative value to last year. What I'm saying is that it seems like we're selling a house (or car) that we are WAY upside down on yet will still be on the hook for payments after the sale. Why bother? Keep him and let him pitch -- just like keeping the house and living there or driving the car and not having to go get another one.

Is letting him go and getting 2 (seemingly) mediocre prospects worth a $4 million savings?
Harry Dunne

I would guess that because:

A. That takes innings and opportunities away from guys who might be the future of the franchise and even if those guys suck then...

B. Losing gets you better draft slots.

Because maybe one of these prospects pays off, and you aren't going to pay him $20 million to pitch for a losing team in 2019 anyway. Without a trade, you're gonna pay him the $8 he's still owed this year and $6 million to buy him out, and all you get his a handful of meaningless starts in August and September for a team playing out the string.

This way, you get prospects, and you may have just avoided about $12 of the $14 million he was due (if the Cubs exercise the option, you're only on the hook for $2). At worst, you get prospects and you are only out $8 of the $14 he was due. Go spend that remaining $6 or $12 in FA.

Rangers will pay $10 and Cubs will pay $4 of that $14.

THAT was the best deal we could get for this guy?
Based on the updated report (which I suspected the early reports were wrong), the Rangers are paying $2 of $8 for 2018 and may not be on the hook for anything in 2019 (if the cubs exercise the option). If Hamels pitches well for them down the stretch, I suspect they will. Folks need to be hoping for a Verlander-esque boost in energy from Hamels now that he's pitching for a team competing for a title vs. pitching in 105 degree heat for a losing team.

This is interesting. Be curious as to how much teams would give up for Joey.

I would be ok with trading Gallo. He's got great power and can play defense but he is a low contact hitter. I'm not sure what the numbers are now but at one point about 90% of his HRs were solo shots.

That being said, we better get some top 15-20 MLB prospects, guys ready next year, for him.

In housing, that's called a "short sell."

I definitely wouldn't call Gallo untouchable, don't think anybody on the roster is. But I'd assume teams are going to try to buy low due to his low batting average. He has crazy power, is a good athlete that can play multiple positions (IB/3B/OF), so no way should we be selling low on him this soon, He is still young and controlable. It would take a good haul in return.

Feels like other games against the Astros this year. Working pitch counts and leaving men on base all game. Just can't seem to get the big hit.

I agree it should take a decent haul.

It would resolve some roster issues.

Gallo has indicated he doesn't want 3B. Calhoun in LF, allows Choo (if we can't unload) to play DH.

The problem I see is, we are chasing SP after SP. We have a number of studs on the way, so we'll end up with tons of SP, and have to trade for bats in 2 to 3 years.
DannyDuberstein

I'm fine with that. Easier to sign decent bats that sign good SP's

To be fair, we need bats and pitching now. Beltre has the best BA on the team at .290 and we know he is gone soon, either in a trade this season or after a final season next year (hopefully). Next on the list is Choo at .285. We may be shopping him but we won't get much in return unless we eat a good bit of salary. After that, we have quite a few .250 to sub .250. Gallo is hovering around .190 and has a career .197. I know BA isn't the end all-be all of hitters stats any longer because of advanced stats, but I like to use it as a general gauge of a hitters ability.

The Phillies have two top 100 pitching prospects that are expected to arrive next season. I'm sure we couldn't get them both but one might be a good addition to next years roster.

Edit to add: your comment regarding trading for bats in 2-3 years is kind of the life cycle for teams competing for titles. This year, teams are trading for mostly pitching. In a few years, if we are stocked with SPs, we can trade them for bats to get us to the post season.

Just a routine public service announcement that needs to be said when the two teams square off.
